Chapter one
The sound of explosion startled Merliya and the dough she was trying and failing to knead fell out of her hands onto the wooden counter.
“Oh no. Shit..” She muttered as she rushed towards the oven to investigate the explosion making a mental note to order pizza for dinner unless her family and boyfriend planned on scrapping the lasagna from the oven walls.
She quickly turned off the oven, and opened it to be met with smoke.
“Ugh! But I did everything right this time. I followed the recipe to the letter, with no improv, I didn’t yell at the lasagna because food has emotions and I put onions- and you know I hate onions. So Dad,” she says to her dad who had just gotten in to investigate. “Mom’s ancient oven owes me an apology and it owes you 750 grams of beef. But right now let’s clean this before mom finds out.”
“Maybe it has something to do with the fact that you used your sister’s decorative glass bowl.” He put emphasis on the decorative noting the pattern on one of the shards that had fallen to the floor.
“But it was aesthetically pleasing and it’s my first time cooking for Ken I wanted to impress him, besides she’s not even here.”
Before he could reply her mother spoke.
“What is burning?” She said entered the simple but efficient kitchen and said, clearly before noticing the mess.
“What happened here?” She looked to both of them for an answer already knowing Merliya had likely tried to bake again.
“I don’t know but she wanted to destroy evidence to hide it from you, darling.” Her Dad threw her under the bus and quickly moved to his wife’s side and smiled before kissing her cheek affectionately.
Merliya gave him a look that said “ I will kill you and feed your insides to crows.”
He was starting to mouth something to her before her sister joined the Food Wars show.
Her bitter adopted sister who seemed to have the single purpose of draining the happiness from Merliya’s life. She was adopted three years before Merliya was born and her parents thought they wouldn’t be able to have a child of their own. After her birth, she was still treated well but now feels she lost the spotlight and despises Merliya simply for being born.
“Typical Merliya always creating a mess of anything she touches.” She sneers
“And where have you been for the past week young lady?” Her Father questions Davina.
“ I can explain Dad. I remembered when Jackson died and I felt so sad and I just needed space.”
And just like that Davina got away with insulting her and going awol for a whole week as everyone sympathized with her. Several years ago Her sister’s mate Jackson passed away a few days after they found each other. Merliya didn’t get why she was always going on about how she was broken when it was clear she didn’t like Jackson because he had a low position in the pack.
“Dear sister, just because you have a boyfriend doesn’t cover up your faults.” the phrase dripped with venom. “ Do try to do something about yourself, we wouldn’t want them to think we are related to failures.”
“Davina don’t be like that.” Her mom tried to intervene,
She should have gotten used to her words by now but they still hurt anyway. Maybe because it was true.
“It’s the truth, even your former friend Chloe, she’s younger than you are but she has found her mate .” Davina insisted.
She ignored that and plastered a smile on her face. “ Well, I’m happy for her.”
“Are you really? I would think you would be jealous about her finding a mate, seeing as you couldn’t get that right either.” Davina smiled.
“At least I have real parents.”
She yelled out in anger and stormed out of the kitchen ignoring her parent's cries for her to come back.
She ran out of the house and stopped as she was about to enter the forest nearby she thought about Ken who was probably still sitting in the living room but she was too upset to face him now, she took off her clothes, shifted and continued, she needed to get the hell away from Davina.
As she ran she felt at one with nature and was able to calm down and thought about going back home since it was getting late, then she heard Davina screaming, she snickered and assumed she realized her precious bowl was in a hundred pieces. There was no way she was going back anytime soon. She found the blanket she kept out in case of situations like this and fell asleep on it.
Smoke.
It registered in her head even before she woke up. Something was burning. She got up, shifted to her human form and did a quick inspection of her surroundings before realising it was coming from the direction of her house. She got up wrapped herself in the blanket and ran home.
Her breath caught in her throat as she saw her house up in flames.
She screamed and tried to run in but the fire was too much. She ran for help screaming as she went until people surrounded the house trying to put out the fire.
She sat there silently crying and she prayed desperately for them to be okay, Her mom, her dad, and even her sister. Because despite everything she did to her she considered her a part of her family.
A stern-looking man came to her looking forlorn as he shook his head.
“There was a man we caught fleeing the scene, it’s obvious he did something to them, red hair, not very tall, know him?”
“Yes, he’s my boyfriend, we were supposed to have dinner with my family.” She said quietly in shock. Could he be behind this?
“Why were you in the woods?” He asked her.
“Davina and I got into a fight and I just wanted some space so I left I thought she was just playing a cruel joke when I heard her scream.”
“What happened?”
“She said some mean things to me and I-I I reminded her that she was adopted and I heard her scream but I thought she was trying to get me back and when I came back I saw my boyfriend sneaking away.”
“How could you do such a thing? She reached out to you and you ignored it? And the only suspect is your boyfriend. I wonder if you’re not even in on it.” The man sneered.
“I didn’t know.” She clutched the blanket around herself with their flour-dried hands.
“Now your family is dead because of you.”
“No, no, no.” She muttered into the protective wrapping. People gathered around her throwing her dirty looks. She was still on the floor even as everyone left.
Someone was lurking around the house, she raised her head to see who stayed behind and she recognized him as her boyfriend. It seemed he was on a phone call, so she strained to listen and although she could only make out a few words of what he was saying it told her more than enough.
“Yes, it is done . . . . I made sure . . . . Looked like an accident. She quickly got up to go after him but he saw her and fled faster than she could catch up.
And that disaster was only the start of the downhill spiral her life was headed.
