“f*****g traitor,” Merliya wheeled around at the sound of boots and turned to face a guard who glared at her. “Family-killing arsonist.” He hissed, she shrunk further out of the way and hung her head, picking up her brush and going back to her cleaning.
She was now an Omega, the Council had sat, and after her pleadings, decided that they weren’t going to kick her out given that she was young and now an orphan who so far didn’t have any evidence implicating her for the deaths of her family. Her ex boyfriend still hadn't been found and questioned so people still pointed fingers at her.
Where she was at the moment, cleaning. She rolled her eyes at the guard, sighing.
Just as she went back to cleaning, she heard voices rise behind her. She turned around to see the guard who had passed her just now.
“Evening gentlemen, how are we gearing up towards this evening’s event?”
“Yes sir, everything is in order sir” the other two, chorused. He seemed to be a ranking guard.
“Good, nothing can go wrong, as you know, it’s also our Alpha’s Mating too.”
“Who goes there?” One of the guards had heard her and was now turned, looking up in her direction.
“Um, It’s Merliya, I work here and one of you passed me just a moment ago”
“Oh it’s just the traitor redhead,” the guard who’d passed her just now, murmured to the others as he turned towards her,
“Well tonight, it’s the Mating Ceremony for all the young wolves but cowards and traitors who kill their own families are not welcome.” As he said this, he reached back and tapped the others on their shoulders and chests, they all sniggered as he re-joined them.
“It wouldn’t matter if you went anyways,” the junior guard who’d accosted her, looked up and added,
“Even if you attended, the Moon Goddess Luna, won’t regard you enough to give you a mate, she doesn’t look kindly on cowards and not traitors, you can expect to live the rest of your life alone and miserable.”
All of this was too much for Merliya, who turned and ran through teary eyes towards the servant’s quarters, to her room. She flung herself onto her bed and cried for a little bit, she then picked herself up and sat in bed, hugging herself.
She simply laid back on the bed, drifting into a tired sleep, her head needed it.
Her quiet, restful sleep was interrupted when there was a sound of locks turning, her senses peeked up, and she raised her head to look towards her door just in time to see it swing open, ajar. No one was in the doorway.
“Hello.”
She remained still for about 20 minutes just looking at the door and waiting for something to happen. When suddenly, an idea struck her and she stood up abruptly, she was going to attend that Ball. It was after all a masked event with masks only to be removed afterwards. She was gonna go and that was it. If anything, to sate her curiosity.
She had a quick shower and picked out her best dress. One Elder Chloe, the Beta’s mother had thrown to her to have, once while she’d been cleaning out her room. It was a simple crimson-coloured evening gown, satin and flowing, but it had cuts which she stitched up. She removed the rags she was wearing and put the gown on. She let her auburn hair down and it fell in thick, dark red curls down past her shoulders. She put some balm on her rosy, full lips and was ready to go.
She peeked into the hallway once again and checking that the coast was clear, stepped lightly into the doorway. As she passed the courtyard, she picked up a mask she saw on the floor, it was a black feathery one,
“it’ll have to do,”
She muttered to herself. She followed a well-lit walkway to the event of the ball and it looked glamorous, teeming with young adult wolves her age mingling and drinking from wine glasses.
“A drink miss?” she was surprised the waiter was talking to her. It seems people do treat you based on what you look like.
She picked a drink off the tray the server had offered to her and took a sip and she walked further into the crowd, her hair glowed in the light of the full moon and the dress clung beautifully to her body.
She heard people murmur and saw and then pointed at her in clear admiration, she hadn’t looked or felt that good in a while. She allowed herself to enjoy the evening and was just about to leave when...
“Bless Luna, the Moon is now at its peak.” The Master of Ceremony announced, “Ladies, Gentlemen, Wolves, you can now find your mates and be in turn found.”
The moon peaked just then and she felt a change in energy, her senses were ultra-heightened. A scent hit her and her head snapped in the direction it came from, what was that scent? Looking directly at her was an imposing figure, dressed in a black silk shirt and trousers, donning a silver mask. So that was where the scent was coming from. They each began to move towards each other and met in the middle.
“Take your mask off”
His scent was heavy, and sweet and he had a powerful aura around him and she just wanted to comply, but she knew she just couldn’t, she wasn’t supposed to be there. But how could she say no to the beta?
“I-I can’t,” She replied to him.
He moved even closer to her and said in a much lower voice.
“Take it off, I want to see your face”
“I’m sorry bu-...” She was about to reply when he swiftly but calmly reached up and yanked the mask from her face.
His face twisted and he recoiled immediately, some heads turned their way.
“You!” He yelled in angry disgust
Everyone was looking towards them and some had begun gathering around. Gasps of shock rose from among the crowd.
