Chapter three

“Look that’s her,” she heard one couple say in-between short gasps “It’s the traitor girl,” “You know, she left her family to burn.” The murmurings were beginning to grow and now she could hear scattered remarks “Is she...the beta’s mate?” “But she’s so beautiful,” “Hey it’s that Omeg-...” “Silence!” Came the bark and everywhere grew still, the crowd shuffled as the beta stepped forward. The Alpha was away on a diplomatic mission so the beta was currently the one in charge. “You are her aren’t you?” He growled, “The redhead who conspired to have her parents and sister, burn to death?” It sounded more like a statement than a question the way he put it. Her heart was pounding in her throat now and she inched backwards clutching one side of her dress and whimpering as she looked up at him. She didn’t mean to cower, but there was something about the beta’s presence and aura that just had that effect on her. He was close enough now that she could see his face well. His wavy, shoulder-length hair was jet-black and the moonlight shone off of it, it hung over his face just enough so she could see his eyes, they shone a lupine-green colour and were framed by black, and made him seem even more menacing. “You are she, the traitor omega are you not?” picking his words his words carefully, menacingly as his eyes narrowed further “Y-yes I am, ” She said in a firm but high-pitched voice. “Fuucck!” He sighed rubbing his face in frustrated annoyance. "Is that my dress?!" The beta’s mother came forward and slapped her so hard she fell. "You thief!" She shouted at her in front of everyone and started to tear the dress on her body. "But you gave it to me." Merliya sobbed. "How dare you. Are you calling me a liar?" the punishment for accusing an elder of something like that was quite severe. "N-no." "So how did you get this dress? " "I took it," she whispered the lie and the beta’s mother kicked her. "I stole it." Merliya cried, hating that she had to lie to save herself. "A traitor and thief." Someone muttered. "Look at me," the beta said and pulled her up roughly from the ground. "You are not fit to be the mate of even my lowest stable boy. You are no one. I reject you." Merliya felt the pain as he said those words. “This Ceremony is over, everybody leave and head home.” His face had contorted back into a frown as he raised his voice and declared to the crowd looking only directly at her in anger. At this, the people began to disperse and in only a couple of minutes, only the both of them were left. “Do you have any idea what you’ve just done?” She shook her head, she hadn’t meant for any of this to happen. “You embarrassed me!” He paused for effect, “I cannot understand for the life of me why you were here at all, Why?” He barked. “You’re coming with me,” in that same low voice that made Merliya just want to comply, even if he’d said it so menacingly. That night, Dayn was unable to sleep. All he did was pace the room that served as his office and study, he’d crossed the mansion to go there to have a whisky when unable to sleep, he’d been tossing and turning in bed. His shirtless hairy chest heaved as he sighed again, taking a sip. He knew exactly what had happened. As the sun rose that day meeting him still awake, he rubbed his temples and kicked back, standing up, he left for his room to freshen up, changing into a crisp white shirt and deep burgundy trousers. He went through the new letters on his desk. Some of them we regarding Merliya. He smiled. He was about to make that b***h pay for embarrassing him. “Go fetch that girl Merliya for me, I’ll be in my study”. “Yes, beta.” He walked on to his study and as he was halfway through his coffee, a soft knock announced the presence of Merliya at his door. He’d smelt her scent already, “Come in,” He snapped out of it. “I’m just going to put it to you straight,” He said. "You are worthless and everybody hates you. You are a traitor, a thief, a liar, a murderer and an outcast. You are lucky I even allowed you to stay in the pack. And then you went somewhere you knew you were not wanted. I should exile you for sneaking into the ceremony." He heard her start to sob. "But it's your lucky day, when my mother tore your dress some very important men saw what they liked and it gave them ideas. I have received offers and I have decided to accept them. In two weeks he'll come to get you, and from then on you belong to him. You have to do everything he says if you value your life." "For now," he continued, growling under his breath “You will be given a room in the basement and food once a day while you continue your cleaning duties. However, you will not be seen in public, I don't even want to remember you exist. That is all, you may leave and wait outside, I’ll have a guard show you to your new living area.” And with that he sat back down, gesturing open-palmed towards the door. Merliya stood up slowly, stung more than she ever thought she could be, gripping the chair to steady herself as she rose. She straightened up, face blank as much as she could make it and neck high with pride and contempt for the beta as she turned to leave, but on the inside, she felt anything but proud and stoic. There was no way she would let anyone sell her body. She knew what she was going to do next could get her in worse trouble than she was, was she prepared to risk it all?
