--- Chapter 2: Unwanted Connection The woods had always been Jordan’s sanctuary. The trees whispered secrets she could never quite understand, the wind carried the scent of adventure, and the silence between the occasional crackle of leaves was a welcome contrast to the chaos of the world outside. But today, everything felt off. Her usual carefree hike was clouded with the memory of the man she had encountered—Zane Steele. There was something about him that unsettled her, something she couldn’t shake. Even now, hours after the strange encounter, his amber eyes and commanding presence still haunted her thoughts. With a grunt, she pulled herself up a rocky incline, brushing damp strands of her short hair from her face. The rain had stopped, but the air was thick with moisture, the damp earth making her boots sink deeper with each step. She had come to the woods to clear her mind, but instead, the encounter was all she could think about. What was his deal? Why had he been so cryptic? And why did she feel this strange, undeniable pull toward him? Her mind kept racing, asking questions she didn’t have the answers to. Jordan wasn’t the type to entertain thoughts about romance or fate, especially not about someone like him—a man who radiated power, who made her feel small despite her own tough, unyielding nature. Shaking her head, she continued her trek toward the river that ran through the woods. The sound of rushing water grew louder, and she welcomed it, hoping the steady rhythm would drown out the thoughts spinning in her mind. But as she neared the clearing by the river, a sudden chill crept down her spine. Something wasn’t right. The usual sounds of the forest seemed distant, muffled, as though the world had held its breath. She paused, straining her ears to listen, but the silence stretched for too long. Then, she saw him. Zane stood by the edge of the river, his back to her. The way he carried himself was different from any man she had ever met. There was an air of dominance to him, something primal, as though he didn’t belong to this world. His dark hair, wet from the rain, clung to his neck and shoulders, framing his strong, almost predatory silhouette. He hadn’t noticed her yet, but Jordan was aware of him in an instant, her senses kicking into overdrive. She knew she should turn around, walk away, forget this whole thing, but something about him kept her rooted to the spot. A spark of irritation flared within her. She wasn’t the type to back down. Ever. Not from anyone or anything. “Are you stalking me now?” she called out, her voice louder than necessary, trying to mask the nervousness creeping up her throat. Zane didn’t turn, but his lips curled into the faintest smile. “Hardly,” he said, his deep voice carrying easily over the rustling leaves. “You’re the one following me.” Jordan’s eyes narrowed. “I’m not following you,” she snapped. “I’m out here doing my own thing. You’re the one who keeps showing up.” This time, he did turn, and their gazes locked. The intensity in his amber eyes sent a jolt through her chest, and for a moment, she felt like she couldn’t breathe. She refused to show any weakness, though. She wasn’t the type to let a man—especially one she barely knew—intimidate her. “Funny,” he mused, taking a step toward her. “I thought you’d be more... difficult to find. I’m surprised you’ve been this close to me without even realizing it.” “Look,” Jordan said, crossing her arms over her chest, trying to keep herself grounded. “I don’t know what your deal is, but I’m not interested in whatever you’re offering. So just... leave me alone.” Zane’s gaze softened for a brief moment, like he was weighing her words carefully. But then the corner of his mouth twitched into a smirk, the amusement in his expression only adding to her irritation. “I’m not offering anything, Jordan,” he said, his voice quieter now, but still carrying that deep, commanding tone. “Not yet, anyway.” Her heart skipped a beat at the sound of her name on his lips. How did he know her name? She had never seen him before, at least not until their first meeting. And even then, she had made it clear she wasn’t interested in anything he had to offer. Before she could respond, Zane closed the gap between them in a flash, moving with such speed that Jordan barely had time to react. One moment, he was standing a few feet away, and the next, he was right in front of her, his presence overwhelming. Her breath caught in her throat as she looked up into his eyes. “What the hell are you doing?” she demanded, her voice cracking with the shock of his sudden closeness. Zane didn’t say a word. His hand shot out, grabbing her wrist with startling force. He was stronger than anyone she had ever encountered, and the grip he had on her made her feel helpless, her usual defiance slipping away for just a moment. “You need to listen to me, Jordan,” Zane said, his voice low, almost a growl. “This isn’t just some coincidence. You’re involved whether you like it or not. And you’re not ready for what’s coming.” Jordan tried to pull her arm away, but his grip only tightened. Her pulse raced, her heart thudding painfully in her chest. She had never felt so powerless before, so completely out of control. Her defiance wavered, but she refused to show weakness. “I’m not interested in whatever you’re selling,” she said through gritted teeth, trying to muster the strength to free herself from his grip. Zane’s eyes softened for a brief moment, like he understood her frustration, but then his face hardened again, the dangerous edge returning. “You don’t get it. You don’t have a choice.” Before she could respond, he released her wrist and took a step back, his eyes still locked onto hers with an intensity that left her breathless. Without another word, he turned and disappeared into the trees, leaving Jordan standing in the clearing, her heart racing, her mind reeling. She stared after him for a long moment, trying to process what had just happened. Who was this man? And why did she feel like her life had just taken a sharp, irreversible turn? ---
