Chapter 3: The Unseen Bond Jordan didn’t return to the woods for several days. Her mind was a whirlwind, a maze of confusion and frustration, each turn leading her back to Zane. She couldn’t understand why she couldn’t get him out of her head. Why couldn’t she just ignore him like she did with everyone else? But something about him felt... different. She knew he wasn’t just another stranger, another passing face in her life. He had a way of making her feel like the world was smaller, more complicated, and infinitely more dangerous. The pull she felt toward him was almost tangible, like an invisible thread linking their fates. The thought scared her, and it scared her even more that she had no idea what it meant. Days passed, and Jordan tried to go about her life. She worked at the local mechanic shop, fixing cars and pretending to be the tough, no-nonsense woman everyone assumed her to be. Her male coworkers barely even looked twice at her, a fact that she secretly appreciated. But her mind was always elsewhere, always thinking of him. What was he? What did he want? And why, in all honesty, did she care? It wasn’t until the afternoon of the fifth day that she saw him again. She was walking to her car after work, the cold air stinging her cheeks, when she felt it—his presence, like an electric charge running through the atmosphere. She froze, her heart skipping a beat as the hairs on the back of her neck stood up. Without turning around, she knew he was there. She could feel him. “Zane,” she called, her voice cutting through the silence. There was a brief pause before a familiar voice answered, deep and steady. “Jordan.” She turned around slowly, and there he was, standing at the edge of the parking lot, watching her with those piercing amber eyes. He was dressed in black, as usual, and his posture was as commanding as ever. “What do you want this time?” she asked, crossing her arms defensively. Zane took a step forward, his movements slow and deliberate. “I’m not here to make trouble,” he said, his voice quieter than before, almost like he was trying to reassure her. “Then what do you want?” she asked again, though she knew the answer wasn’t going to be something simple. Zane’s gaze softened for just a moment. “I’m here to keep you safe,” he replied, the words so serious that they startled her. Jordan blinked, momentarily thrown off guard by his response. “Safe?” she repeated, her voice tinged with skepticism. “From what?” He paused before answering, the weight of his words hanging heavily in the air. “From the world you don’t understand. From what’s coming.” Jordan’s blood ran cold. The way he spoke, the urgency in his tone—it made her feel like she was teetering on the edge of something far bigger than herself. “What do you mean?” she whispered. Before he could respond, the ground beneath them seemed to shift. A sudden gust of wind whipped through the parking lot, the trees nearby swaying violently as though something unseen was approaching. A chill crawled up her spine, and Jordan instinctively took a step back, her pulse quickening. Zane’s eyes darted around, scanning the surroundings with a sharp intensity. “They’re coming.” The words barely left his mouth when a low growl echoed from the shadows of the trees. Something stirred within the woods, a presence dark and dangerous. Jordan felt a deep sense of dread settle over her, the kind that made her want to run and hide, but she couldn’t move. The air was thick with tension, the moment hanging in the balance. Without warning, Zane moved toward her, his body blocking hers from whatever threat was approaching. “Stay close to me,” he ordered, his voice low and commanding. Jordan’s heart pounded in her chest as she obeyed without thinking. She had never felt more exposed, more vulnerable. She had no idea what was happening, but the certainty in Zane’s actions and words made her trust him against her better judgment. From the trees emerged figures—dark, shifting shapes that moved with an unnatural speed. They were like shadows, flickering in and out of existence as they closed in. Jordan could feel the temperature drop, her breath coming out in visible clouds. Zane growled low, a sound that sent a wave of tension crashing through the air. The figures slowed, clearly aware of his presence. “Get back,” Zane ordered, his voice sharp. “This is my territory.” The creatures hesitated, their glowing eyes fixed on Zane before shifting their attention to Jordan. “They’re not here for you,” Zane muttered, his voice laced with frustration. Jordan had no idea who they were, but the way they moved and the way Zane spoke—like he owned the land—made her understand that whatever was happening, she had just been dragged into something far beyond her comprehension. --- Chapter 4: The Unraveling In the days that followed, Jordan’s life became a series of strange occurrences. She found herself being pulled further and further into a world that was as dangerous as it was fascinating. Zane insisted on keeping her close, a shadow in her life that she couldn’t escape. Every time she thought she was ready to walk away, he would appear, always with a reason for why she couldn’t leave. It wasn’t just the creatures that stalked her every step, it was something far older, something that had been watching her long before she even knew it. Zane’s cryptic words about a coming storm became more than just a warning; they were a prophecy. Jordan began to notice the subtle changes in herself, the way her senses seemed sharper, more attuned to the world around her. She could hear the rustling of leaves even when there was no breeze, smell the faintest trace of wood smoke in the air. Her body had changed, too—more agile, stronger than she had ever been before. “What’s happening to me?” she asked one night as they sat by the fire, the only light in the dense, shadowy woods. Zane looked at her, his amber eyes filled with something unreadable. “It’s happening because you’re not just human, Jordan. You’re something more.” She blinked in confusion. “What do you mean?” “You’re connected to the bloodline,” Zane said quietly. “The bloodline of the first Alpha.” Jordan felt her stomach tighten. “What does that mean for me?” Zane’s gaze softened, and for the first time, she saw something almost like regret in his eyes. “It means you’re about to inherit a power that will make you a target. And it means you’re never going to be the same.”
