Chapter 1
Why is this so difficult? I am so tired, I never knew this could be this difficult. A tall young woman with a light shiny brown complexion and disheveled long silky black hair, who looks like in her young thirties, wearing a completely buttoned white blouse inside and black suit outside, with a black skirt that is below the knee, is staring into the nothingness, inhaling all the harmful smoke and dust by the side of the road, seeming to not mind that fast-paced day in the metropolitan. Her makeup is already smeared, and she looked haggard for her age. It is a bright sunny day outside, and the weather is so hot it can get you dehydrated after a few seconds. All people are carrying an umbrella to protect themselves from the scorching hot sun, or even lessen the heat they are feeling. But the young woman, with her sweating profusely, does not feel bothered by the hot temperature anymore. She got used to it. This hot day marks the end of her three months in the city, of not finding a decent job for the degree she graduated. Another first day of the fourth month she is officially unemployed will be tomorrow. It will start, tomorrow. Thea is an accounting graduate, with a doctorate and master's degree. Industrious, patient, and intelligent student, as accurately described by her professors and classmates, she is the most popular in her university in the past. She also has an angelic face, a pretty face that can make all heads turn and catch a glimpse of her, marveling at her beauty. Coming from a well-off family, she also has good manners, that can be comparable to the daughters of elite families. She walks with dignity and finesse, like that of a princess from a royal family. She speaks slowly, with a soft voice, not getting angry ever and she never did shout at anyone. She graduated with the highest honors among her batch mates and had numerous awards. She passed the national licensure exams with flying colors, her name displayed everywhere in the town she lives in, and the university bragging her achievements to other universities. Her persona is an image of a perfect student. A perfect daughter, with no single flaw. Everyone in her province wants to be like her. She even was in the national news three months ago. Her relatives and friends flooded her social media accounts with congratulatory messages, some who even greeted her are people she did not know all her life. She just accepted those in her account out of courtesy. She traveled to the city a week after she knew that she passed the national exams, as she wants to find a job there, against her family's wishes. The city rate for income is higher than that of provincial rates, that is why she came with that decision. She has so many plans in her mind. But everything came out as unexpected. Thea is disappointed. My money won't last me another month. I need to find other part-time jobs. Additional five part-time jobs maybe will be enough to pay for my bills. She heard something familiar. Her stomach is growling. It feels like a burning sensation. I am hungry. I haven't had any meals since last night. What a beautiful life. I am a legend. An exam more topnotch who haven't found any job yet in the city after three months. What a huge disappointment. I feel like my years of studying until my eyes bleed are wasted. Thea put the water bottle near her mouth, drinking the water remaining from it. She looked at her hands, there are no resumes left, she submitted it all to more than a hundred accounting companies in the city. Exhausted, she sat on the pavement near the road. Vehicles are just passing by her. Luxury vehicles. Companies are eager to hire her, as she is an intelligent person, but backs out once they know she hasn't had any job experience. The smog is choking her; overcrowding of the vehicles and young people wearing suits and casual dresses carrying folders who seemed to try finding a job running everywhere is becoming suffocating for her. She saw a LED across the street where she is sitting flash a commercial. She saw that commercial many years ago when she was very young. The commercial showed many girls and guys. All of them are really and handsome. Different kinds of beauty. They have smiles that can light up a whole room. Their faces resembled the life of youth. No problems. The ones that you should worry about are what kinds of facial wash you should buy in a beauty store, or what meal should you choose from the menu card in a restaurant. Well, I consider myself lucky, coming from a middle-class family, with supportive and able parents who provided all her needs. Hmm, supportive. I am not quite sure about that. Thea still is passing the time sitting on the hot pavement, trying to not mind her hunger. She is becoming dizzy and nauseous and felt something liquid dripping from her nose. She panicked and she opened her bag. Thea gulped a set of pills from three bottles inside her bag, with her butterfingers. Three kinds of pills. Antacid, Anti-anxiety, Anticonvulsant, and a nasal spray, Oxymetazoline. Antacid. She had a stomach ulcer because of the stress she experienced since she was young. Her stomach excreted more acid than it should usually do. She had an ulcer even if her room in her home is filled with various kinds of food her parents gives her. Anti-anxiety, because she had all kinds of problems every since her younger years. If she has an attack of anxiety, she will become dizzy, have irregular heartbeats and she will have some convulsions. People who are experiencing convulsive episodes should take maintenance medicines, anticonvulsants. When all of these attacks happen and do not stop immediately, she will have epistaxis, which is the known medical term for nosebleeds, which will not stop in an instant. Blood will be dripping from her nose, nonstop. Her nosebleeds made her faint when she is in her college student days, and she is rushed to the hospital. She almost died then. She considered herself lucky, and unlucky, too. This nosebleed is a life-threatening situation for Thea. She cannot afford to lose a lot of blood. After gulping the set of pills, she sprayed the nasal spray into the bleeding side of her nose. She breathed a sigh of relief. Taking those medicines will help her to avoid further attacks. She raised her head and looked again at the commercial, still flashing in the LED. I used to be like that, too.
