Doris POV The calm breeze of Crescent Grove welcomed me as I alighted from the cab and the street was unusually quiet. I walked towards a small yellow bungalow, brought out my key and inserted it into the door. After unlocking the door, I rushed straight to my mother's room. I found her laying helplessly on the floor . After seeing her in that condition, I threw what I was holding on the bed and tried to restore my mum. "Mum! Mum! Wake up. I'm back" She opened her eyes a little bit and held my hand tightly. "My daughter, how was your first day at work?"she asked in a low tone. " It was fine Mum. How are you feeling?" I asked while placing my hand on her neck to feel her body temperature. "I'm having shortness of breath and severe chest pain. I need to undergo surgery as soon as possible." My heart felt shattered with the response my mother gave. She was diagnosed with heart disease and stroke 5 years ago, when my father left us. Since then I've been supporting and caring for my mother by doing some part-time jobs even though I was just 18 years at that time. On my nineteenth birthday, I received a full scholarship to my dream university. At first I didn't want to accept it because of my mother's condition but she convinced me to take the opportunity. Mum tapped my shoulder and whispered softly ,"Doris!!!". I looked at her, " Blood mum! You're vomiting blood". I raised her up from the floor, " Mum, let's go to the hospital", I demanded even though I knew I didn't have enough money for the surgery. "But how will you get that amount of money?" Mum questioned. "Don't worry, I will sort it out. You'll undergo the necessary surgery today Mum, by all means." I replied with lots of thoughts running through my mind. "Please sit on the bed," I said to my Mum. I picked up my handbag, brought out my phone and ordered Ub*r. Two minutes later, I got a notification that the driver had arrived. I went outside the house and requested help from the driver because I couldn't bring Mum outside all by myself. *********** After 30 minutes of traveling, we arrived at a large building. It has a big billboard sign that displays 'Pacific International Hospital'. It is the place where they said Mum would have her surgery. "This building is so huge. I wonder how much they would charge for the surgery", I exclaimed as my heart began to beat fast. I got down from the car and went inside the hospital to seek assistance from the nurses. They took Mum into a special room and denied me an entry. I decided to sit in the reception contemplating about the next step to take. Moments later, a young man in white coat walked towards me and questioned me," Miss, are you the daughter of Mrs Kearns?". "Yes I am" I replied, curious about what was going to happen. "Please let's meet in my office" he demanded. He directed me to his office and persuaded me to sit. He sat on his seat and took a deep breath , "Miss, we can't operate on your mother unless you make an initial deposit of $50,000". "$50,000? Initial deposit?" I exclaimed. The last time I checked my account balance it was only $50 that was staring at me, I refreshed it a couple of times but nothing changed. "Miss, you are not saying anything…..?"the doctor said. I didn't know what to do or say. I know my mother needs this operation but I was totally bankrupt. "Doctor, I'll try to raise the money and get back to you. Please make sure my mother is being taken care of", I said to the doctor and stood up from the chair. " Just so you could know, you have only 48 hours," the doctor announced as I stepped out of his office. 48 hours? I only have until Thursday? How am I supposed to get that amount of money in a few hours? My brain was getting hot as I stood at the entrance of the building overthinking and taking a glance at every single person. "So many lives are at risk" I sighed in pity, considering the total number of people at the hospital. Suddenly my phone beeped. I wanted to bring out my phone but I discovered it was buried deep inside my handbag. I did all I could to get it and when I eventually got it I saw that it was a notification of payment from PrimeTop Ventures. I wasn't familiar with that name but my heart felt a little bit loose, since $3000 out of the surgery fee is now available. While I was still staring at my phone, a huge man walked past me and I perceived a familiar fragrance which triggered my meeting with someone. I began to brainstorm and suddenly whispered the name 'Kelvin'. "Yep, it was him. How could I forget about him so fast?" I said, acknowledging the fact that I was too forgetful. 'That reminds me, he said I should contact him if I needed any assistance.' I scrolled through my contact list to find his number which I saved with Kelvin [with a love emoji]. "Right timing" I said, as a cab dropped off someone right in front of me. I got into the cab and dialed Kelvin's number. "Hello Doris. You finally called me" he said as he answered the call after dialing it for the fifth time. " Yes. Please, I need your assistance. It's about my m……." I was about to continue but he interrupted. " I'm busy now. I will send you my house address immediately after this call. We can meet up there and discuss" he said. "Okay. Please send it now, I'm on my way" I replied. Just after I clicked on the red button to end the call I saw a message notification. "Address: 123 Willow Street, Evergreen Heights, Rivertown. Passcode to the door is AUDI2134. Make sure you feel at home! [smiles emoji]" I showed the driver the location and he proceeded to drive me to the location.
