Doris POV
"We've arrived at your destination," the driver informed me.
"I didn't know it was such a short ride. Anyways, how much is the total bill?" I said as I adjusted myself from my sleeping position.
"$80 ma'am. Also you slept all through the journey and it was a long ride" the driver said.
I took a glance at my phone and discovered that it was already 7pm and I admitted that the driver was right.
I looked into my purse and noticed that I only had $50.
"Bad News Mr. Driver, I only have this…" I said calmly as I stretched the dollar bill with my two hands.
"Your safety and comfort are my priority. Don't worry about the fare, just take care and have a great day" the driver said with a smile.
I was so pleased with his response because it was rare to meet this type of understandable driver.
I thanked him for his kind act and exited the cab.
I wasn't good at locating addresses so I politely asked for assistance from the residents in that area. One of them offered to walk me to the place.
On my arrival I was astonished. The building was huge , like a mansion. Let me just call it a mansion.
I decided to visit the entrance before people start thinking that I'm a trespasser.
As I arrived at the main gate, a short guy appeared in uniform. I assumed him to be the security.
"Hello! How may I help you?"he questioned.
"Hey! I'm Doris. Em…….." I didn't know what to say because I wasn't expecting to meet a security guard.
"Oh it's you, My boss informed me that you were coming. Please come in" the guard welcomed me.
Thank you, Lord. I thought I was going to be left outside since Kelvin was busy.
As I walked into the big fancy house, I was amazed by how beautiful it looked. The mansion was surrounded by pretty gardens filled with colorful flowers and tall trees. The gates were tall and made of black iron, adding to the grandeur of the place.
I gained access to the main building with the passcode Kelvin gave me and everything was so fancy. High ceilings adorned with sparkling chandeliers, and the rooms were filled with elegant furniture and artwork. The floors were shiny and made of marble, and there were big windows that let in lots of natural light.
I felt like I was in a dreamland, surrounded by luxury and beauty, and I couldn't wait to see more of the amazing place.
I sat on a comfy couch with big, soft cushions that made me feel snug and cozy.
The urge to explore the whole building keeps on driving me forward, fueled by curiosity and excitement. But I decided to compose myself because it wasn't right to roam about in someone else's apartment, respecting their privacy and space.
Some minutes later my stomach began rumbling. I knew that I hadn't eaten since morning because I didn't have an appetite due to my Mother's condition.
I couldn't hold myself anymore so I found my way into the kitchen to make a meal for myself.
After opening different doors to confirm which one led to the kitchen, I finally saw a well furnished and equipped room filled with lots of kitchen utensils and tools.
I had another problem, I couldn't tell which cupboard had foodstuffs so I opened every single one of them until I saw what I needed.
I gathered what I needed to make the meal and started the cooking process.
Seconds later, I heard a strange loud voice speaking in a different language.
The voice didn't sound like Kelvin's.
I didn't have a chance to leave the kitchen because I was frying bell peppers and onions for my rice and sausage and I didn't want to ruin it.
The sound grew louder and louder until a deep, commanding voice came through into the kitchen, drawing my attention.
As I turned to see the person that entered the kitchen, my eyes widened at the sight of him – a man I assumed to be in his early thirties, exuding an aura of power and authority that seemed to command the very air around him.
His sharp, tailored suit accentuated his muscular frame, while his dark, penetrating gaze seemed to pierce through any facade. With his impeccably styled hair and a subtle yet confident smirk playing on his lips.
His appearance fascinated me.
"How did you gain access into my apartment?" the man asked as he ended the phone call.
"I'm here to see……….." I tried to give him a response but he cut me off.
"I wasn't talking to you!"he yelled at me and gave me a cold look.
"Johnson!"
"Johnson!!"
"Johnson!!!"
He roared with an angry face.
I was very scared and felt intimidated so I tried to leave the kitchen with the meal I prepared.
"And where do you think you're going?"he questioned. So I had no other option but to stay.
The so-called Johnson came out as fast as he could but the man was still mad.
"Where have you been? Who is she? Why are you sweating at this time of the day?"He bombarded Johnson with a lot of questions.
"Firstly, I……… I was using the restroom when you called….. secondly, she is Miss Doris……." Johnson said in fear.
"Doris who?"he questioned.
I was tired of his rude and bossy behavior so I confronted him, " Hey mister! Since you came here, you've been so rude and arrogant!. Please respect yourself and don't make me disrespect you".
I looked at his face and he couldn't believe I spoke to him in that manner.
"By the way, I'm Doris. Kelvin's classmates back in school days"I said and stretched forth my hand for a handshake but he refused it, he then gave me a stink eye and walked out of the kitchen with anger.
He stopped walking and yelled, "Johnson, meet me in my space!",then he proceeded.
As soon as he left I felt relieved, I haven't spoken to anyone in that manner unless they were getting on my nerves.
I felt tension within me and wished Kelvin was at home.
I took a glance at my phone and noticed that it was already 9pm. "Why is Kelvin not home yet? It's getting late. Let me call him" I mused to myself.
I unlocked my phone and saw that I had a new message notification from Kelvin.
"Hey Doris. I had a change of plan and I won't be able to come home until Friday night. I'm sorry for any inconveniences. You can discuss whatever you need with my stepbrother, Gabriel. We live together in that apartment and I'm sure he will help you. Take care[love emoji]."
"Really? Tell me this is not happening? I only have until Thursday to pay Mom's surgery bill!" I yelled as I dropped the meal on the cabinet.
I didn't know what to do anymore and I had only one option and that is to ask Gabriel for help, that rascal that arrived earlier.
