Chapter 20 Jason P.O.V. What the f**k. I set the phone down and look at it as if it has grown horns and started tap dancing on my desk.  Amelia Smith has just called me to look into her husband’s affair.  I have been trying to figure out a way to plant proof of it in her apartment and now she has handed me the easiest way to show her the truth of his actives without placing any risks on my people.  I wondering what gave her the idea and I am pretty sure Jordan is responsible for this.  I am going to have to have a chat with her later about going around me, but we got lucky with her calling me instead of the multiple other P.I. in this city. I stand and head over to my filing cabinet.  I do not stop there but go to the picture of the dogs playing poker hanging in my office.  I pull the picture down and look at the blank wall behind it.  I trace a symbol on the wall and the wall fades into a safe.  That is my magic.  I am able to conceal things.  It made me a great spy during the war.  But I wanted to be a part of the action and not hiding away in some office stealing paperwork.  I huff, the war is always a touchy subject for me.  I still have nightmares.  It is the reason my marriage didn’t last and why my kids barely talk to me now.  I am a grumpy ass and I know it. I rummage through the safe and pull out a folder labeled Smith, John.  It a fairly thick folder with photos of Smith going in and out of Town Hall and the ‘secret warehouse’.  It also has some photos of his wife and his mistress.  I look at his wife.  She is older than I thought at first.  Beautiful, yes but she always looks so sad in every picture we have of her.  Her husband on the other hand. Tall, smug, I guess he is handsome.  I wouldn’t know. At first, we though them being assigned here was a punishment.  All the information we found on John rise to stardom shows that he is an arrogant son of a b***h who rubbed the people in power the wrong way, but he kept getting elected.  His speeches were okay but everyone who heard them kept saying how wonderful he was and how he was the best thing for the country.  It was almost cult like.  We suspected him having a magic person on his staff from early on, but we could never figure out who it was.  Then we assigned Jordan to befriend the wife and see if she could get in with the staff and see who it was.  We were all surprised to find out it was his wife.  The kicker was she didn’t know she was magic, and her husband has been using her.  Jordan swears she thinks it is all innocent, but I am pretty sure he knows what he is doing. Now after many months of watching John and sending in spies of our own we have a pretty good idea what he is really up too.  I flip to the picture of dead magic people on slabs at the ‘secret warehouse’.  Thank God our spies have confirmed that all these people die of natural causes and the bodies have come from morgues and cemeteries, but still, it is horrifying to look at these bodies in different stages of dissection. From what our spies have told us, they are looking for a way to harness our gifts.  Corporations have been doing that for years.  But they hire magic people and pay them well for their gifts.  This is something altogether different.  They want to find out what gives us magic and use it themselves.  I stop at the picture of a young child.  I recall seeing young children dead during the war, magic and human alike bleeding on the battlefield.  Innocent lives taken because people were scared.  The government experimented on us before the war.  They wanted to ‘cure’ us.  They would capture magic people and experiment on them and ultimately kill them and dissect their bodies.  Throwing them out like trash when they were done.  Finding your love ones and friends in the garbage.  Having to sneak in, hoping you are not caught, and steal their bodies back so you could bury them properly will leave scars on anyone’s soul. I shake my head to clear the images of my memories.  It will only be a matter of time before they move to live subjects. We need to find a way to stop them and soon.  If this was the government doing this, we would just expose them.  The world would be horrified and worried because they are breaking the treaty, but from what we have found out this is not the government.  It is not even some company.  It some type of secret group that is working behind the scenes.  Our hackers cannot find the main people behind it, they are hidden under layers and layers of security.  If we expose them now, they will just set up shop somewhere else.  It is better to deal with the devil you know than the one you don’t.  So, we keep trying to get people into that organization and find out what they are ultimately up to and who is responsible.  We thought we had a break when John Smith got here, but he is just a lackey.  They are positioning him to be the figure head so if they are ever found out they can offer him up as the sacrificial lamb and keep on moving without anyone knowing anything.  I am certain that this is not even the real research lab, that it is just a front.  That the real research lab, the information we really want, is someplace entirely different.    I flip back to the picture of Amelia, maybe our way in is with the wife.  She knows the people her husband meets with outside of the office.  Maybe one of them could be our conduit to the real organization.  They have to have someone sending information from the leaders to John.  She may be useful to us after all.
