Chapter 11 Amelia’s P.O.V. I arrived back to the apartment after work a little later than normal.  I had to stop at the store since this was the first dinner I was preparing since David arrived a week ago.  Every time I got home David wanted us to go out to dinner and explore the city.  John would grumble and finally agree.  The dinners followed the same routine.   David would ask how our days went and then he would go into great detail about whatever deal he was working and how John would be a great asset in working whatever deal.  He would then start hinting at John that once we were done in Border City, I should start working at one of his company’s branches in DC.  John would always just roll his eyes and look back at the food.  This morning was different.  I was getting my stuff for work together and David asked if I would mind cooking tonight instead of going out.  I agreed and told him I would be happy to cook.  He smiled, kissed my cheek and headed to the guest room to get whatever work he was doing done.  I discovered that while we were at work David would tour the city looking at office building and then handling deals that only he had input for.  I was pretty sure he was considering an office here, which was surprising.  David was not a big fan of magic people, but he was a big fan of money.  I could see him swallowing his pride and opening an office here if it could earn a big payoff.  I prepare the meal and I can hear nothing but silence from the living room.  John was not happy that David decided to have a cozy family dinner.  It is easier for him to ignore his father in a restaurant.  There is less of a chance to have a serious conversation if we are in public. I set the table and put out the meal.  I do not even have to announce it is done as both men maneuver towards the table.  The first few minutes of the meal are quiet.  Finally, David sets his fork down and steeples his fingers.  The main show is about to beginning and even John notices.  He lays his fork down as well and crosses his arms across his chest.  “So, you are finally going to tell me why you are here?” David gives John this cryptic smile and nods. “Yes, I have spoken to some of my governmental contacts about your prospects.  They believe that you were sent here on a fool’s errand.  Apparently, you are supposed to inventory the magic area and report back.” John is glaring at his father.  The fact that he has got some much information on John’s assignment is impressive.  John finally answers his father, “And?” “And my magic contacts tell me that they know about your assignment and are actively ensuring you do not get the accurate information.  So, tell me, my boy, what in the hell are you doing here?” John stares at his father and then direct his eyes to me. “Amelia, could you leave my father and me alone?” David holds up a hand and stops me, “No, I think she deserves to know why you are wasting everyone time.” “Amelia, Leave!” John shouts. I excuse myself from the table and head to the bedroom.  I close the door with a loud click and then stand at it like a 16-year-old schoolgirl and listen.  If I had a cup pressed to the door, the look would have been complete.  I cannot believe that David actually has contacts on the magic side of the wall, and they seem well informed.  John looked like he was going to blow a fuse.  I wonder if I could open the door a c***k.  They would not see it from the dining room.  I decide to risk it to hear what is going on. “Leave it alone, dad.  You don’t need to know what I am doing.” David starts to laugh, “You think you can do something on the sly and no one would notice?  You are such a fool.  People know what you are doing, and they are getting concerned.” “People, like you, who are only concerned with how much money you can make.  I am doing something that can change the world, and no one is going to stop me.” “Change the world, you want to rule the world and what you are doing will destroy you and your entire family.  So, you want that?  You want to hurt your mother, your brother, your wife!  And for what, your damn ambition?” “You have no idea what you are talking about!” John shouts.  “You think those things deserve something more?” “You married one of those things” “Hush, keep voice down.  She doesn’t know and I don’t want her too.” “You can’t keep something like this a secret forever.  What if she gets powers, what will you do then?” “She doesn’t have them now and she will not get them later.  For everyone concerned she is human.” I hear David pacing the room.  “Then you better stop this research you are doing.” “Is that a threat?” John asks. “No, it’s a warning.  Sooner or later, she is going to get pulled into this and then what?  You are going to include her in your research?” John slams his hand onto something with a loud bang. “My Amelia will not be a part of any of this.  And if they get wind of what she is, I will know who to blame.” David laughs a dark quiet chuckle, “I don’t want her to be found out.  She is my daughter-in-law.  I want her to work for me with you.  But you are on this suicide track, and you are determined to ruin us all.” “I am on a track to be the most powerful man in the Country if not the world.  You have two choices, dad, help me or get out of my way.  But I will achieve my goal and my Amelia will be by my side.”  I had never heard John say anything so dark and evil before.  I quickly shut the door as quietly as I could and headed to the bathroom.  I turned on the shower and started to prepare for bed.  The mumbles and shouts continue for a few more minutes than I heard John come into the bedroom and slam the door. I had finished my shower and was changed into my Pajamas.  I was busy brushing out my hair and braiding it.  John stood behind me and watched me in the mirror as I prepared for bed. “Everything alright?” I asked. “Yeh, Dad being dad.  Telling me I sucked and when will I deicide to come work for him.” “I am sorry, I know it hurts every time he belittles you.” John smiles at me and walks up and hugs me from behind.  “I know you will never leave me.”  He kisses my check and walks out of the bathroom.  I quickly finish up and leave the bathroom.  I see John sitting on the bed with his phone going over emails or something.  “I am going to go clean up the kitchen really quick.” He nods clearly engrossed on what every he is reading.  He looks up as I reach the door, “Be quick about it, we have not had any quality time in a while.” I stop and turn to him, “But your dad is still here?” “I don’t care.  I miss my wife.” I nod and hurry to the kitchen.  I take my sweet time cleaning up hoping John will fall asleep before I get done.  I am in luck, and I see his chest rising and falling in the rhythm of sleep.  I take a deep breath and crawl into bed.  I managed to get out of it this time, but I need to figure out what I am doing soon.  Because I cannot keep putting him off. The next morning as I was getting ready to leave for work, I noticed David bags are sitting by the door. “Oh no, you are leaving us so soon.” David smiles, walks up to me and gives me a smile. “Yes, my dear, I have to get back to work, my company wouldn’t run itself.” I hear John grumbling something from the kitchen, but David and I choose to ignore it. “Well, it was great having you here.  You need to come back and bring Marie,” I tell him. He pulls back and grabs my hand, “You take care and if ever need any help do not hesitate to give me a call.”  That was a cryptic statement.  He is smiling down at me and still holding my hands.  He finally looks up and shouts to John, “Remember what we talked about and when you decide I am right I will make sure there is a job waiting for you.”  He pulls me into one final hug and turns to pick up his bags and walk out the door. I turn to John, “What was that all about?’ “Nothing,” he states.  “Dad just be dramatic.” John gathers his things walks by me and gives me a kiss on the cheek and heads out the door.  I am standing now with the door open and watching father and son storm from the building.  Everything is changing and I am caught in the middle of this crazy storm.  I hear the lyrics from an old song start playing in my head, “Do I stay, or do I go?”  Well, that is the question.
