Chapter 7

First day of high school

Evana first day at high school went great, more than she had imagined. After completing the paperwork in the office with her mother, and the secretary confirming that she had all the required books, she was taken to her new classroom. Finally am a high school student, she though as she stood at the door of  form one class, everyone was looking at her, although she didn’t mind as she was looking for two faces in particular, Kerry and Jersey  her best friends. wholly, as she was looking she happened to noticed some faces were familiar, some of her class eight crony were here, that made her feel more comfortable.

“Evana,” someone called, and she was sure she knew the voice, when she looked at the back she notice it was Larry, her former school mate, although they were both in same school they were not in the same class.  Evana smiled “hi Larry,” she greeted him and started walking to where he was sited at the back right corner of the class. “Would you love to be my deskie? He asked her. Evana was taken by surprised, she never imagined Larry to be the talking type. Sorry, I can’t make such a decision without involving my girls, come to think of it have you seen Jersey and Kerry?  She asked him, Evana was still standing with her bag on her back and noticed that most of the students were staring at her.

Actually am surprised to see you coming in a lone, I thought they were coming to pick you from the office like other students are doing. Evana was surprised but she did not think anything about the event. So she decided to seat with Larry as she wait for her friends. However, unknown to her, Kerry and Jersey not being in class at that particular moment was a calculated move by Jersey.

Although Evana didn’t know Jersey hated her, for the fact that she came from a poor family and she could perform well in school and despite that many students since primary school wanted to be her friend. But why was it not her at least she came from a well off family, her dad owned few businesses in the center and other neighboring centers, her elder brothers and sisters could get her clothes, shoes and pocket money. She really felt good any time she gave Evana, some of her used clothes, and could even tell some friends that she was the one who gifted her because she could not withstand seen her friend, wearing same clothes all the time, so for her Evana was supposed to be a charity case and beneath her. Nonetheless, throughout the years she was able to keep it hidden and no one could even think she was the one who linked some of the gossips in primary school about Evanas family.

But now that they have joined high school she vowed that people will get to spot her more and she will take any opportunity to put Evana to shame without anyone’s knowledge, she was done being in her friends shadows. Therefore, her first plan was to shame Evana on her first day in school, she was sure just like in primary school, Evana will be naïve and first thing she will do is look for them and walk to them just like back in primary, so her thought was what will happen if they are not in class, how will she react and make a fool out of herself. So when she noticed at any time Evana could walk to the classroom she asked Kerry to take her to the washroom, Kerry reminded her that Evana could be finishing with admission and be coming to class, but Jersey pretended to be really pressed, and promised that they would be quick. In the washroom Jersey took her time, and in her mind she could only imagine Evana scared face standing at the door looking for them.

When they came to class, Jersey was the one who was in shock, Evana seemed to be having a good time with Larry, (her Larry), and the guy from class eight Kampala, whom she had noticed earlier has become even more handsome after the rite of passage during December holidays. She covered her bitterness with a fake smile and pulled Kerry by the elbow, hey Evana already has a deskie, and see, It’s Larry our former school mate. Kerry was happy to see her friend and went to her for a hug.    The girls had their happy uniting moments, but Jersey wanted to know why Evana was sitting next to Larry.

So Evana you already have a desk mate, Jersey asked.

Evana was caught by surprise, hell no Larry is not my desk mate, I don’t even have a desk I was waiting for you.

Ooh so you are not his deskie, I saw you sitting next to him, and concluded that, Jersey was really smooth.

Come to think of it, we can only have one desk mate so I think its settled Evana should sit next to Larry, at least he is not a stranger we came from the same school, Kerry aired her opinion.

I don’t think it is good for Evana to have a male desk mate considering her situation, Jersey, pointed out, how about I became Larry’s deskie while you too sit together, she offered.

For the girls they were extremely grateful to Jersey for being selfless and was willing to change sitting positions for the sake of their friend Evana. However, this was her plot to make sure that Evana was far away from Larry as possible. Being deskies with Larry was her best opportunity to be near him and eventually date him, he was handsome and had those hooded eyes that drives her crazy, being next to him will at least make him notice her.

Unknown to her Larry had noticed Jersey way back in class six, but he was disappointed when he found her snitching about her best friend Evana, he even knew that she was the one who use to spread gossip about Evana and their mom in school. Instead of loving her he started to Roth her, he hated backbiters. Despite knowing all that he didn’t want to mess a good friendship, besides he believes its bests if the girls came to learn about their friend on their own, and also they could not even believe him if he told them. Additionally, he had noticed how earlier Jersey was drooling on him, and there is no way he was going to be deskie with that hypocrite fake friend. So he came up with a solution.

I have decided if Evana can’t sit with me, then I chose who will be my deskie and I want it to be Kerry or anyone else but Jersey, you’re the strongest between the three of you so you best seated with Evana, Larry pointed out.

He really enjoyed the look on jerseys face, which proved he was right, the crazy girl had feelings for him, the guts lol, he thought.

The girls decided that Kerry should change positions as Evana took her place, despite everything Jersey was happy that Evana didn’t get the chance to sit with Larry. She trusted herself, and putting Kerry there was better than having another girl seated to her crush.

The day went by, the teachers started coming to class at around ten am, and all they did was introducing themselves and the subjects they will be teaching and what they expect from their student.

Lunch time came and they all went to the kitchen, unlike any other school where there are dining room, this school didn’t have and another thing this was their first day of eating Githeri (common staple food, which is mainly a mixture of maize and beans boiled together) for the next four years. After getting their share they looked for a tree and sat there to enjoy their food, and that became their eating place.

So just to update you LVSS (Lare Vision Secondary School) by then was just five years old, so it did not have lots of facilities. It was one stream, the main building was built in letter L shape, and the first room from the gate is the staff room, then form one class that was in between the staffroom and the administration office. Next was the form two class, form three class and the computer lab. Outside the form one class there was space for assembly point and then a single classroom for the form fours, some meters away there was a circular concrete which was named the roundabout where student would sit during break time to get some sun. Behind the form four class there was a tank and the kitchen was beside it. The science lab was located few meters from computer lab and in between the staff washrooms. On your right from the gate the girls wash room were located there few meters from the boy’s washrooms. Then there was a field where they practiced valley ball, football and a garden for agriculture student, so it is not the kind of school you would get lost.

So evening came and the students went home after cleaning their class, to Evana it was a great day, but she didn’t know that talking to Larry was the biggest mistake of the day and she will come to pay for it dearly in the future.
