Chapter 14

Meeting him

Evana walked the remaining distance towards home, thinking on how she will meet Danny , as she walk down the valley, she recited for the 100th time how she will ask Leah if Danny was home and that she needed his help.

She stood at the gate, wondering if she should go or not, despite being friends with Leah she has never gone to their home. She stood there and got her courage, and made up her mind to just go without calling Leah from the gate which she always do (in village you shout someone’s name at their gate). She opened the gate and started walking towards the homestead, although everyone knew that Leah’s family has German Shepherd dog, most people though they were just stories to keep people off. So Evena was too occupied with her thought she did not see the black huge dog approaching her, she came back to her senses when she had an animal glow, before her was the biggest dog she has ever seen in her life, Evana screamed, at the top of her voice, the name she screamed was Danny, there in front of her was her death, but even in her shock mode she remembered, an article she had read that, if you came across a trained dog, just stay still don’t move, it won’t hurt you. So Evana composed herself and looked the dog in the eyes.

Danny was in his house when he heard Evana call his name, at first he thought he was hallucinating, but then, Bosco was glowing, so he decided to look outside. When he looked outside the scene was amazing and breathtaking, there she was standing with her school uniform, staring back at the dog, but looking keenly, one could see, she was shaking, but she was not willing to part her eyes with the animal.

Damn, she is soo cute, he took his phone and took a picture, and he wanted to keep that moment forever. He walked towards them, “Bosco…Bosco” Danny called the dog.

Evana heard his voice and she let out some air she didn’t even she was holding in, she could now breath. That’s when she recalled how she had shouted his name, “damn….what will he think of me, I look scared like a chicken,” Evana thought.

Bosco walked towards Danny and started rubbing its head on his thigh, Danny touched it head as he watched Evana facial expression change, he could tell one minute, she was happy then she became sad. “Silly girl I wonder what she is thinking,” Danny wondered.

“Hey Evana, are you okay?” Danny asked.

Evana was surprised, again, he asks if she is okay “oh…yes am fine, just a little bit scared, I have never seen such a huge dog all my life.”

“Am sorry, that you got scared,” Danny told her, while walking towards her.

“It’s all my fault, I should have called out, instead of just walking to your home,” she answered taking a step back.

Danny noticed she was scared, “don’t be scared, I don’t think Bosco will harm you, actually your very brave, Leah doesn’t came near it, and you stood there looking into it eyes, that was brave and beautiful, I really admired you.”  He told her.

Evana heart skipped a beat, did he just say he admired me and that I was brave, she was delighted.

“Are you here to meet with Leah, she went to the far side of the farm to get some vegetables, I think she will be back soon, how about you wait for her,” he was really excited, that Leah was not home, so he will have to spend sometimes with her.

Evana, was not sure how to say he was here to meet him not his sister. So she gathered all her courage and in one sentence, “actually am here to see you, actually I really wanted to see you…….God what did I just say, am I running mad, will he think am one of those crazy girls after him, she faked a cough then continued……and ask you to help me with your last year set book. Oh it’s for school assignment.

Danny was taken by surprise when she said she really wanted to see him, but when she continued the sentence that it was because she wanted his help, his bubble was busted. But again she wanted his help, so he was delighted that of all the people she thought of him. So she gave himself some hope.

 Bosco was looking at Evana, and she decided to give it a shot, she looked at the dog, this time the dog could she there was no fear in her eyes, she extended her hand and petted it head, the dog went to her and rubbed its head on her legs, Danny was amazed on how the two bonded.

Danny left Evana with Bosco and went to his house to get the books for her, Evana was really delighted that the dog liked her and that she could pet it. Its far was really beautiful, it was black and shiny its eyes were blown and when it looked at you, one felt like it could read all your fears or your next move.

Leah came home, carrying vegetables in a plastic basin, she was really surprised to see Evana playing with Bosco. Only Danny connects with the dog and their father, even her two brothers are scared of it, they always ask their father to take it back, where he got it.

Evana hey, how did you get to bond with it, for the last two years, me and that animal we don’t even look at each other? Although it knows all the family members, it only listens to Danny or my dad, so am impressed that you connected with it.” Leah told Evana.

“Actually it scared the hell out of me, I have never seen such a huge animal all my life, which breed is it?” Evana asked.

I think it’s a German Shepherd,” Leah answer, as she walked towards the kitchen.

“Waoh it beautiful,” Evana kept petting the dog. “Evana were you not waiting for me? You should come to the kitchen and talk here please, don’t come with that dog.” Leah tried to inquire why Evana was at their home.

“Actually today I came to see Danny,” Evana answered.

Leah was surprised, she came to see my brother? Since when they started dating, he promised to stay away from her, am going to skin him alive today.

“Oh, I thought you and Danny are not close,” Leah planned to play a long and know what she wants.

“Actually, I needed last year set books, and he is the only person I know have them, I don’t know where Sara took her books after school.” Evana explained.

“Okay, you should have asked me to borrow them for you, but its fine hope he still have them.” Leah looked sad.

“I wanted you to do that but you were not home, so he came and I had to tell him what I wanted, I was really tensed, you know we don’t talk just greetings.”

“Evana,” Danny called, “here are the books you can keep them”

She didn’t hear him coming, his voice was soothing, and the way he called her name was so cool and sweet. She wanted to ask him to call her name again.

She turned towards him he was holding a man of the people by Chinua Achebe and things fall apart, the look in his eyes was tender, she wanted to just stand there and look into his eyes, they looked calm and caring.

Danny enjoyed the way she was staring at him, it’s like she was staring deep into his heart, “if you want others I have lot of books, but for now I have to give you what you want for your assignment,” he told her.

She took the books and bide Leah and Danny goodbye, to her surprise Bosco, walked with her to the gate, Leah and Danny too were amazed, Bosco only sees two people off Danny and their Dad, it’s like the dog too has fallen for her thought Danny.

Evana smelled the books and they smelled like Danny, everything that just happened was like a dream, but most importantly was how he looked at her and his dog liking her, she felt like she had won a double lottery.
