Two pink lines stared back at me like a death sentence.
My hands would not stop shaking as I sat on the cold bathroom floor, the pregnancy test hidden between my thighs. Morning sickness had hit me hard again today. I barely made it through breakfast without throwing up in front of Victor. Now the proof was right here in my hands. Positive. I was pregnant.
I pressed my forehead against the marble wall and tried to breathe. This could not be happening. Not now. Not in this house. Victor had touched me only a handful of times since our wedding, and those nights were cold and quick. But Kai… no, it was Damien now in my tangled thoughts. The man I had been secretly meeting. The one who made me feel alive when everything else felt dead.
I flushed the test down the toilet and washed my face with cold water. My reflection in the mirror looked pale and scared. I pinched my cheeks to bring some color back. Victor could not know. Not yet. Maybe not ever.
I slipped out of the master bathroom and went downstairs. Victor had already left for the office, thank God. The house felt quieter than usual. I grabbed my phone with trembling fingers and sent a quick message. We need to talk. Now. The east garden. Alone.
Ten minutes later I stood among the tall hedges, arms wrapped around myself even though the sun was warm. Footsteps approached. Damien appeared, tall and confident as always, his eyes lighting up when he saw me. But his smile faded when he noticed how pale I looked.
“Clara, what is wrong?” he asked, reaching for my hand.
I pulled away quickly. “Do not touch me. Someone might see.”
He frowned but kept his distance. “Talk to me. You look like you have not slept.”
I swallowed hard. The words stuck in my throat for a long moment. “I am pregnant, Damien.”
He stared at me. For a few seconds he did not move. Then a slow smile spread across his face. “Pregnant? That is… Clara, that is incredible.”
I shook my head fast. “No. It is not. I have been sick every morning. I almost vomited in front of Victor today. If he finds out…”
Damien stepped closer. “He will not find out. We will handle this. This child changes everything. It could be the key to taking him down.”
I looked up at him, my chest tight with panic. “You do not understand. I do not even know if it is yours. Victor has… we have been together a few times. What if it is his?”
Damien’s smile disappeared. He ran a hand through his hair. “It does not matter right now. We will deal with that later. The important thing is you are carrying a child. An heir. Victor has always wanted one. If he thinks it is his, it gives us more time.”
“More time for what?” My voice came out sharper than I intended. “I am the one living with him every day. I am the one who has to hide morning sickness and pretend everything is normal. You get to stay in the shadows and plan your revenge.”
He reached for me again but stopped himself. “Clara, listen to me. I have been working on this for years. My father destroyed my mother. He destroyed me. I came back to burn his empire to the ground. This baby… it could be the final piece. I will accelerate everything. The coup is already in motion. I have allies in the company. Documents. Evidence of his illegal deals. We move faster now.”
I pressed my hand to my stomach without thinking. “You are talking about destroying him while I am stuck in that house carrying a child that might tear everything apart. What if Victor finds out it is not his? What if he finds out about us?”
Damien’s eyes hardened with determination. “He will not. I will protect you. Both of you. I promise. Just keep hiding the symptoms for now. Take the nausea medicine I got you. Stay close to the house but avoid being alone with him too much. In a few weeks I will have enough to strike.”
I wanted to believe him. Part of me did. Damien had been the only person who made me feel wanted since I entered this cold marriage. But another part of me was screaming. I was trapped between two powerful men. One who owned me on paper. Another who wanted to use me and this baby as a weapon.
“I am scared,” I whispered. The words felt heavy. “Every time I feel sick I think Victor will notice. Every time he touches me I feel like I am going to break. And now this…”
Damien looked around quickly before pulling me into a brief, tight hug. I let myself lean into him for just a second. His warmth felt dangerous but comforting.
“You are stronger than you think, Clara,” he said against my hair. “We will get through this. I will make sure my father pays for everything he has done. And when he falls, we will be free. You, me, and the child.”
I pulled back first. “You should go. Someone might see us.”
He nodded but his eyes stayed on mine. “Be careful. Message me if the sickness gets worse. I will send more medicine through Lena.”
As he walked away through the hedges, I stayed behind, trying to calm my racing heart. My hand went back to my stomach. A baby. Something that should have been joyful felt like another chain around my neck.
I made my way back to the house slowly. Maria was in the kitchen preparing lunch. She gave me a concerned look but said nothing. I went upstairs and locked myself in the bedroom again.
The pregnancy test was gone but the two lines were burned into my mind. I lay on the bed and stared at the ceiling. How long could I hide this? A week? Two? Victor was sharp. If he suspected anything, he would dig until he found the truth.
And Damien… he was so focused on his revenge that he did not seem to care whose child it really was. He just wanted to use it. Use me.
Tears came again. I cried quietly into the pillow so no one would hear. I had sold myself once to save my family. Now I was trapped in something even more dangerous. A secret that could destroy everyone around me.
My phone buzzed. A message from Damien. I am speeding everything up. Stay strong. We are almost free.
I did not reply. I turned the phone off and curled up on the bed. The nausea was coming back. I ran to the bathroom just in time.
As I knelt over the toilet, vomiting what little I had eaten, one thought kept repeating in my head.
What have I done?
