chapter 1
CHARLOTTE I walked through the hallway in panic as I wondered what will happen to my mother. Everyone stared at how unkempt I was and shook their heads in great pity. I groaned. I had always hated being pitied. "Doctor, how is my mother?" I asked and the look in his eyes made me realize my mother is either dead or her condition has worsened. "I'm sorry, she is in a very bad condition," he said and tears drip down my face. Just a few years ago, I lost my dad to cancer and now my mom is fighting for her life?. "Doctor is there anything you can do?. My mom can not die" "You need to get a hundred thousand dollars for her operation" the doctor dropped the bombshell and I froze. There was no way I could get that money. I had just lost my job a few days ago after being wrongly accused. He sighed and added, "You have to produce the money as soon as possible" As I watched him leave, I thought that was the end. I won't be able to save my mom. Just then, a young man walked in. He was in his late twenties and the perfect definition of a demigod. He had a slim face with a distinctive jawline with large eyes and full lips. At that moment, I forgot about my problem and focused on him. He was just the perfect ideal man I wanted. Cute face, tall, pink lips, broad chest. "Hi" he cooed and my heart melted His voice was soft and soothing. "Hi" I cooed shyly "Are you ok?" He furrowed his brows. "You seems to be in tears" "I-i am fine" I stuttered slightly "You don't seem fine. Pardon my manner, my name is Daniel" He stretched his hand for a shake and I took his hand happily. "Charlotte " His lips curved into a seducing smile and I could tell he was flirting with me. "Nice name" He held my hand so tenderly, my heart skipped. "You're beautiful" his voice was hoarse and husky giving me shivers in my spine. He wasn't the first to tell me I was beautiful but he said it, in a really good way. I stared at him and he had a really good physique. His body was well-built and... "Shouldn't you bother about your mother" my subconscious mind reminded me and I mentally slapped myself. "I have to go" "Is something wrong?" "My mom. She needs medical attention and I was asked to bring a hundred thousand dollars" His eyes widened in shock and I found it seductively awesome. "Isn't that much of a money?" I nodded in agreement. "It is" "Do you have means of getting the money?" I shrugged. "No, but I will find a way" He sighed. "I will pay" I flickered my eyes in surprise. "Y-you will?" "Yes" "I-i don't know how to repay you" "You don't have to. Just accept it as a good gesture" That little help he rendered to me in my time of need was something I couldn't forget. He had helped save my mom, so when he asked me out, I said yes. Although I had fallen in love with him at first sight, that help was another reason I said yes. Our love grew day by day, just like the love I had always imagined. Just like every woman's dream to have someone who will love them with all his heart, heaven had given me one and I do appreciate it. ** Our relationship was the modern version of Romeo and Juliet, just that we weren't ready to die yet. He showered me with love, care and pampered me so well. Money wasn't a problem to him so he never stopped spending. At first, I was suspicious of his spending but I was too madly in love to ask what his source of income was. Although I did ask him once and when he told me he walked with an oil company, I couldn't ask further. I was so happy. Who wouldn't be? My life was near perfect with a handsome boyfriend whom every girl dream of having. He is rich, caring, and loving. What else could I have asked for? Nothing. Everything seems perfect until he began to stay late at night. He had asked me to pack in with him which I refused. It was against my belief to live with someone I wasn't married to. I wasn't the church kind of girl but I do believe it wasn't right to live with someone who isn't your husband yet. I only visit him and leave before night. At first, I thought it was due to the nature of his work. When I asked him why he had been refusing my calls and staying out late, he told me he had been promoted and his work had become more demanding. It was easy to believe him. I love him and he has never lied to me or so I thought. I don't know him to be a liar but I know he is very good at hiding his pains, so it took me so long to know that something was wrong. I had thought everything was perfect in our relationship, but I was wrong. The day I caught him on phone talking to someone about his debt, was when I realized he had been lying to me. I was furious. "Why do you have to lie to me?" "I'm sorry. I don't want you to get entangled in my mess" he said and I felt a pain in my heart. He loves me. He loves me so much he doesn't want me to share in his pains. But has he forgotten we have been spending the money together?. "You should have told me" He sat beside me holding my hands. "I'm sorry. I don't..." "You don't have to be sorry. Is there something I could do to help?" "You don't have to" "Let me. Just tell me" "Do you know Damian Adams?" I furrowed my brows. Damian Adams?. That name doesn't sound familiar. "Who is he?" "He is the CEO of Adams' Group of Companies" I shrugged. "I don't know him. Who is he?" "He is the one I owe a lot of money. And he wants me to pay back before the week, ends" "How much do you owe him?" He looked straight into my eyes. "Fifty million dollars" I suddenly felt my legs wobble. Fifty million dollars?. "T-that's a lot of money" He nodded. "I know" "H-how do you intend to pay back" He held my hand. "You said you will help me right,?" I nodded not sure if I could help "There is an auction that will be carried out in two days and he will be there. If you can go and he chooses you, that way you can help me" "What's the auction about?" "Everyone who owes him will be there with a lady. He is to choose one of them to work for him" "What will I do, there?" "Just make sure he chooses you" "But..." He placed his finger on my lips. "You don't have to worry. You won't get hurt" "I..." "That is the only way you can help me, Charlotte. You have to do it. For me. For us" ** It was time for the auctioning and we were asked to line up in a straight line. We were about twenty ladies dressed in different elegant dresses. Some had heavy make-ups on, while others had light make-ups. The room was filled up with smoke and I could hardly see the faces of those in the room but from the way the atmosphere was, I could tell, many of the men here are rich men who must have come for the auctioning. I shivered a little. A woman climbed the stage to count the ladies, I suppose. When she got to my place, she stared at me in surprise. "Are you supposed to be here?" I nodded. "Yes, I am here for the auctioning. Or isn't this the place" "Do you know what this place is for?" I nodded. "For Damian Adams, to choose..." "I will advise you to leave before Miss Lydia sees you. You might not be able to leave after that" "But..." "You should leave if you still like your freedom" She left before I could say a word. I looked around realizing Daniel must have lied to me about what this place was for. I walked out of the place and breathed a sigh of relief. I was furious he lied to me about what this place was meant for. I asked a few questions about Damian Adams and nobody could give me any details about him. I called Daniel and he rejected my calls twice. When I got to his house, it was locked. I returned home hoping to see him soon. ** "You lied to me" "I am sorry" that was his reply when I got to his house two days after. "Sorry won't change a thing. Why did you make me go there when you knew he wasn't going to come?. You even rejected my calls" "I knew he wasn't going to come. I just wanted to be sure you wanted to help. And I am sorry for not picking up your calls" "Is that even a reason?" "I'm sorry" "You were not home either. I visited twice" "I had to look for an alternative way of paying his money" "Did you get any?" "No" "You haven't told me how the money came about" "I will tell you after we pay the debt. Right now we should bother about the payment" I sighed. "So, what's the next step?" "I have talked to one of his acquaintances and he told me Damian needs an assistant. You can work with him to help pay the debt while I find other ways to get the payment done quickly" "I am not going back to that auction ground" "You don't have to. You will work at his office" "Do you think that will work?" His lips curved into a smile. "Of course, it will"
