Chapter 1
Landon
"You're not focused Landon."
That's the last thing I hear Beta Caden say before my back hit the ground. I loved to train and I have been for years. I trained even harder when I got my wolf on my 16th birthday and even harder when I turned 18. Now here I was 20 years old and training had became my way of letting out all of my frustrations. Most Alphas handed over the Alpha title when their son's turned 18. Some waited until their son's were 21, giving them a chance to expand their education. My father Alpha Roman of the Blue Crest pack was neither of those. Ever since my mother's death, he has been obsessed with finding the rogue king and killing him. You see, when me and my twin sister Avery were 7 years old our mother was killed in a rogue attack orchestrated my the man that calls himself the Rogue King. Since that day our once fair and lively pack began to go downhill. My once loving father and loved Alpha became a ruthless Alpha that all pack members feared. Beta Caden and his mate Camille raised my sister and I. Beta Caden trained both of us along with his son Zack. My dad had no time to for us. He spent his days drinking and obsessing over the Rogue King. Losing his mate made him forget about his children and his pack.
Right now I was sparring with Beta Caden to blow off some steam. Earlier today, I was heading to my dad's office to once again talk to him about handing over the Alpha title. He wasn't interested in the responsibilities that came with being Alpha and I knew that I could do a better job than him. When I got to his office, an omega came running out before I could knock on the door. I stopped her to see what was wrong but she told me she was fine though the tears streaming down her face told that she wasn't ok. I walked into my father's office to see him buttoning his pants. When I asked him what happened to the girl, he just said she was doing her duties before walking past me and out of the office with his whiskey in hand.
I was furious and I already knew what happened. The same thing that happened frequently. My dad was forcing himself on pack members but they were too afraid to speak up. Without them saying something, I couldn't take anything to the elders. They wanted proof of anything you bring to them and without the omegas telling me what my father had done to them, I had nothing.
So yeah, this is why I was so unfocused right now. Sparring started out great but then I got lost in thought trying to figure things out.
"I know Beta Caden. My mind is somewhere else right now."
"That's not good Landon. Had this been a real fight, you would've been dead already. What's troubling you?"
Beta Caden knew that I never slacked off with my training or anything involving pack business. He had been running the pack for years trying to salvage what my father had ruined and had been teaching me in the process.
"I think I should challenge my father for the title," I told him. I looked at his face to see if I could read his reaction. It seemed like challenging my father would be the only way for me to get it. The pack was only as strong as its Alpha and right now I felt that we were weak as a whole. Beta Caden kept our warriors trained so we would be prepared if anything happened again but most of them slacked off. I guess seeing that their Alpha didn't care made them not care too much either. I couldn't have that. I needed things to change and the only way that would happen is if I took my father's place.
"Are you sure that's what you want to do?" he asked me.
"I don't want to," I told him honestly. "But I need to for our pack."
"Then I stand by you Alpha."
Knowing I had his support encouraged me more. I knew I was doing the right thing. I was just worried about what my father's reaction would be. He was a mystery to me and I never knew what he would do because his moods changed so often. I know that being challenged would make him furious but I also know that he wouldn't take me serious. He had never seen me train so he probably would think that I couldn't take him. I'm not even sure if he knows that I train.
"I'm going to talk to Avery about it and see what she says," I told him.
My twin sister Avery and I were very close. I valued her opinion in everything so I wanted to know how she would feel about me challenging our father. I quickly went to my room to shower and change. Our pack house was a good size but it needed a lot of work. There were three floors in our pack house. The top floor was for the Alpha family, the second was for the Beta and Gamma families and the first floor was the common area but also had rooms in the back for some of our warriors. There was so much work that needed to be done to give our pack the look of love that it once had. The houses on our land were almost run down and also needed a lot of work. My dad was blowing through pack funds with his behavior. He would be gone for long periods of time and when he would come back he would disappear into his bedroom for days.
"Hey sis. What are you up to?" I asked walking into her bedroom.
"Do you not know how to knock?" She asked.
I smirked and sat on her bed. "Of course I do. But knowing how much you hate when I don't, I chose not to." I laughed.
Avery was serious about everything. She took her privacy as serious as she took her training. She always talked about how she couldn't wait to find her mate so he could take her away from here. I didn't blame her. I wish that I could find my mate and run away with her but I couldn't leave my people here to suffer.
"Where are you headed?" I asked her. She rarely left the pack grounds but today she was fully dressed as if she was heading out somewhere. I was used to seeing her in training gear that sometimes it was hard to believe she had actual clothes.
"Camille told me to get dressed for us to go out. I don't know what for but she said it's important," she told me.
"Well before you go, I wanted to run something by you and get your opinion."
"Sure what's up?" She sat beside me on her bed and waited for me to begin.
"I'm going to challenge dad for the Alpha title," I told her. "He's so obsessed with finding the rogue king that he's losing himself. Our pack is in shambles because of him.. Not to mention what he has been doing to the omegas."
She looked at me for a moment with an unreadable expression. Her silence was killing me making the seconds she was quiet feel more like hours.
"Will the fight be to the death?" She asked me. "Cause you know that's how most challenges go."
"I don't want to kill our father," I told her.
"Then get him to give you the pack. If he doesn't then the only way may be to challenge him. And if you choose not to kill him then banish him once you win. Make him the one thing he hates the most cause honestly I'm tired of all of this Rouge King business. Whatever you decide, I'm with you. I think you make a great Alpha. You care about our people and after all of these years, that is what this pack needs."
Our conversation was interrupted by a knock at the door.
"Come in," she shouted to whoever was at the door. "I want to talk to you about something too," she told me before the door opened. "But we can talk more later."
Beta Caden and his mate Camille walked in with smiles on their faces. What were they so happy about? Did Beta Caden tell her about the challenge?
"I have some good news," Camille said. She pulled up the chair from Avery's desk. "Blue Crest Pack has been invited to an Alpha ceremony."
"How is that good news?" Avery asked rolling her eyes.
"We've never been invited to anything before. Why now?" I asked.
"Hill Crest Pack is known for having a ruthless Alpha isn't it?" Avery asked. "Like taking over smaller packs type of ruthless."
"That is true," Beta Caden said. "But his son is taking the title and from what I hear he is not like his father. He's looking for packs to form alliances with. His father never wanted to but he does. Forming an alliance with him could be a good thing for your start as Alpha."
"And you may find your mate," Camille said then winked at Avery. "Now we need to go shopping for a dress." She squealed.
"Do I really have to wear a dress?" Avery pouted. "I have some perfectly good jeans that I could wear."
"You will not be wearing jeans." Camille stood up and grabbed Avery pulling her to the door. "See you guys later."
"So what did she say?" Beta Caden asked me.
We left Avery's room shutting the door behind us and walked down to his office to speak privately.
"She said that she's behind me if I choose to challenge my father. She also said that I should try to get him to give me the title first and if he still doesn't then do what I feel like I should do."
"You've been trying to get him to do that and he won't budge," he said.
"I'll see if I could come up with another way. If not then I will challenge him."
"Ok well your father saw the invite and said he'll be going too. I'll also be going just to try to keep him from embarrassing himself. We can focus on everything else when we return home. We leave in two days. Let's build some alliances."
Sabrina
"Come on princess. The king wants to see you," One of my dad's warriors said. He was a new one. I had never seen him before."
"Don't call me that." I growled at him. I pushed past him and headed to where I knew my father was.
My name is Sabrina. I'll be 18 tomorrow and I'm a rouge. The daughter to the "Rouge King" to be exact. This isn't a life I chose or a life that I want. I was born into this life. I never knew my mother. All my father would tell me was that she was dead. I remember sneaking to listen the the grown ups gossip when I was younger. One night I heard them talking about the King's mate. One person said she died in a battle. One said my father killed her and another said she ran away and he could never find her. I didn't know what to believe. I used to dream about having a mother. Some one to talk to and someone that might be able to keep my father calm. Although, who knows how he might treat her. He treats me, his own daughter like nothing. I once heard him say that women are meant to do nothing but to satisfy strong me. He used to look at me like he despised me and would always say he was supposed to have a son. That is until I grew up and he began to see the looks that I received from some of his followers. From that point he started training me.
He said I was his key to becoming the King of wolves. Training with him was harsh. He treated me like I was one of his men, only stricter. I had to be the best at everything including how to blend in with pack wolves. He taught me how to mask my scent which was hard for rogue wolves to do. He also trained me to be able to withstand wolfsbane. He went around the humans and got clothes and other things for me. He began sending me on missions to packs where I would pretend that I was lost and had amnesia. From there I would scope the pack out before giving my father the signal to come in.
So many lives were lost when he invaded other packs. I was only happy that I never had to take part in the actual killing. My father said he wanted to keep my face clean from being recognized as trouble whenever I had to go into other packs. He claimed my training was for my safety but I knew he had something big planned that I would be involved in. He just wouldn't tell me what. The last pack we invaded, we took over their land and took their people. Their land wasn't the biggest and only housed a few wolves but their land was secluded which is what my father wanted. I however was tired of it all.
"Yes father?" I asked walking into his office.
"There is an Alpha ceremony coming up and you will be going," he told me. "While everyone is mingling and focused on the ceremony, you will be looking around their pack. When everyone is gone and in bed, you will mindlink me to come in."
"And what is the point of this takeover father?" He always had a reason for invading packs. Whether it be for money, an old grudge or to build his name.
"Their land is big and they have the largest pack. We will be taking over and moving there. Now is the time to start building a bigger army. It's almost time for me to become The King of Wolves."
"He's crazy," My wolf Melody said to me.
"I know and I'm tired of it."
"This could be our chance," She said.
"Our chance for what?"
"To finally get away from him."
"How? And do what?"
"I'll think of something. Just agree to go."
"When will I be leaving?" I asked him.
"Tomorrow," he said. "And once we claim their land, you will be mated to Derek."
"What!?" I shouted. "I don't want to be mated to Derek."
Derek was my dad's top guy. He would be his Beta if we were in a pack. He was disgusting. He had been looking at me with lust in his eyes since my body began to develop. I hated it. He was 32 years old and there was no way my father expected me to mate with him.
"You heard me. Derek is your mate and you will be joined once we move to our new home. You will be of age tomorrow so this is perfect timing.
"And if I refuse?"
"You will not refuse," he growled at me. "My word is law. Now go get yourself prepared for that party."
I ran to my room refusing to cry and let someone see me. Why would my father want me to be mates with Derek.. I got to my room and slammed the door, only for it to be opened.
"Hello my sweet." That was Derek's nasty voice.
"Get out of my room," I shouted at him.
"Your father told me the good news. We will be sharing a room very soon and you will be all mines." He smiled at me and walked out leaving my door open. His voice made my stomach turn. Just the thought of sharing a bed with him made me feel like I was going to be sick.
I slammed my door behind him and screamed. This could not be happening.
"Start packing Sabrina," my wolf said.
"Packing for what?"
"When we leave we are never coming back. You can put the stuff in the trunk of your car tonight while everyone is asleep and then drive out like nothing tomorrow."
"Where will we go?"
"We are still going to the Alpha Ceremony. We have to warn them of what may be coming. Maybe they'll be grateful and let us join their pack. Maybe they can protect us if he comes looking for us."
"Ok. We can do this."
I began packing my thing into suitcases and 2 duffle bags. I had a lot of stuff for a rogue because of my father always sending me on missions but I wouldn't be taking it all with me. Only my favorite items. Once everything was packed up, I hung my dress for tomorrow on my closet door . I jumped in the shower and prepared for bed. I didn't know what would happen tomorrow but I pray to the moon goddess that everything works out.
