We pulled into the driveway of my home just as the sun was setting. Melissa was standing by the keypad awaiting our arrival.
"Hey, kiddo. How's Jess?" She asked me when I rolled down my window to talk to her.
"She's passed out in the back seat. It's been a long day. Did you get the doctor here?" I asked her.
"Sure did, Dr. Patterson is in your medical room waiting on you. More importantly, how're you doing? I know you loved him, but I also knew that you were having him followed, so something happened that you're not telling us," Mel said, handing me a piece of paper with the new gate code.
After putting in the new code, I drove my car up to the front door, quietly getting out of the driver's seat. "Jess," I started quietly, "we're home. The doctor is waiting inside for us. Once we're done, you can go to bed if you want."
I carefully get her out of her seat as Melissa opens the front door for us. Just as I'm about to close the car door, Ace comes around, takes Jess out of my arms, and carries her inside. "I'm going to get Jess seen by the doctor, then settled down for the night. The rest of you can meet me in my office in 20 minutes, and I'll tell you everything," I said.
Once we get Jess inside the house and in the medical room, the doctor walks in asking the extent of her injuries.
"Puncture marks on her arms, legs, and back and bruising on her arms and neck," I said. "I don't know if there's anything internally wrong with her, she isn't showing signs of internal damage, but she could just be masking it."
"I'll do a quick workup on all of her wounds and do x-rays and get her some antibiotics and painkillers," Dr. Patterson said, trying to keep me calm.
"Thank you, Doc," I said. "Do you need me in the room, or is she okay with just Nurse Kelly?"
"You may want to stay. She may not want anyone else in the room when I do her x-rays," he said politely.
I tried my best to comfort my baby girl as the doctor did his job and poked and prodded at her wounds and marks. "You're doing so well, kiddo. Mommy's here," I told Jess, keeping my voice calm.
"Mama, it hurts. I don't like this," she said with tears in her eyes.
"I know it does, baby. The doctor is doing everything he can to make the pain go away, okay?" I said.
"Jess, I know you're scared, but your mom and I need to step to the side, so I can take some x-rays of your chest, okay, sweetheart? I promise it won't hurt, and you won't feel a thing," he said.
"Okay, Dr. Pat," she replied, gently lifting her shirt to show her chest. I was shocked by the bruising but did my best not to let it show. She needed me to be strong. I couldn't let her see me breaking down.
"Doc, I'm going to need everything written in your report, exactly as you saw it. I'll also be taking photos of everything, so I can file a police report in the morning. They're going to pay for what they did to my daughter," I told the doctor quietly.
"Of course, Ms. Imbram. I'll have my report on your desk as soon as we're done here. There are no internal injuries, so she is free to get some rest now, ma'am," he said.
"Thanks, Doc," I said to him as I turned to Jess to help her off the table. "Come on, sweetie, let's get you in bed so you can rest."
