New Plan

I didn't even bother entertaining the rest of that phone call and just hung up on him. I knew that when I got to the office, he'd lose his mind and start asking questions. Christopher has never been his favorite person, so I didn't know why the sudden interest in our untimely divorce. Unless, of course, my step-mom, Ashley, had overheard Christopher's call and was trying to find a way for us to stay together. "Mama, what's gonna happen now?" Jess asked from the backseat of the car. I knew she'd be worried about going back to school since now Sam wouldn't be there to bully her. I could hear the concern in her voice. "We're gonna go stay with Nana and Pop for a little while. I'm taking a much-deserved vacation from work, and you, my sweet girl, are going to be homeschooled for a little while. At least until I can decide what to do with that teacher of yours and the dean of the school," I told her, trying to ease her mind. "But first, we need to stop at Mommy's office, so I can talk to Papa and Nanny Ashley. They have some questions and concerns about what happened between me and your daddy." "Okay, mama. Do you want me with you? Or is Uncle Ace going to take me to your office to work on schoolwork?" She asked in a small voice, clearly scared of what might happen to me. "Uncle Ace and Aunty Mindy are going to take you to my office for a snack, and then you can play on Mommy's computer until I get back from my meeting, okay, pumpkin?" I asked her. "Okay, mama. You don't think Nanny Ashley is going to be mad at you, do you?" She asked me. She knows how much Ashley can't stand me, simply because Ashley has made it clear that she doesn't like me or my daughter very much. "No, sweet girl. She's just being nosy and likes to gossip about my life with her friends, that's all," I told her. I didn't want to worry her too much about the adult stuff. As I pulled into the parking garage at the office, I called Ace. "Hey, Hails. Are you just pulling in?" He asked when he answered the phone. "Yeah, we're here. I need you and Melinda to come get Jessi, so I can go talk to my father and Ashley about what happened at school today," I told him. "Sure thing, Boss. Your office for a snack, then computer games, right?" He asked. "Just like every time I have the two of you watch her. The last thing I need is for him to show up, causing problems. I'll come join you when I'm done with my dad," I told him. The one thing I adore about Ace is how much he knows me and my love for schedules and routines. I pull into my reserved parking space and just as I go to open my door, Ace and Melinda walk out of the elevator quickly advancing towards us. "Don't get out, Hails. We're getting in. Chris showed up. He's demanding you talk to him, hear him out. I told him you weren't here, that you and Jess went to Florida with your mom," Melinda said as she got in the back seat with Jess. "So, what do I do now? I can't go to Florida if he thinks we're there. I need to get the keys to the apartment. I can't take Jess home, he still has the keys to the house," I said, keeping my voice calm and looking ahead so as not to scare my daughter. "Hails, Mel called a locksmith the second you and I got off the phone before you got to school. She's at the house waiting for us with the new keys and the new passcode for the gate," Ace said as he got into the passenger seat. "Of course. Leave it to Melissa to know just what I need to be done before I know I need it done," I laughed. The ride back to my house was silent. Jess had fallen asleep in her booster seat and Melinda was quietly watching the trees go by. I should've known that Christopher wasn't going to sign the divorce papers and go quietly. Not once he saw the infidelity clause and the photo proof I had my P.I. take of him. Maybe if he spent more time watching his surroundings instead of the inside of Jade's legs, he would've known he was being followed. Now I have to go to great lengths to keep myself and my daughter safe. He can be unpredictable when he's mad.
