Once in my room, I texted Ace to make sure he knew I was safe in my room and that I was going to sleep. I put my phone on the charger and went to jump in the shower to get ready for bed. I walk into my closet and grab a clean pair of underwear, a clean nightgown, and a towel before walking into my bathroom to shower. I get the shower turned on to the hottest setting I can stand and get under the spray, letting it relax my tense muscles. I quickly wash and condition my hair and get out of the shower, quickly drying off and getting dressed for bed.
Before I go to sleep, I check my phone for any emails I missed during the day and set my alarm. I try not to respond to any emails at night unless it's time-sensitive, or related to work, but one email catches my eye. It's titled "You Think You Have It All Figured Out" I barely had the chance to open it before Ace opened my door.
"Ace, its 11:30 pm, what are you doing?" I asked him.
"I got the text notification to your last email. Remember we have it set, so any emails you get after 10 pm, I get a text about?" he said.
"No, I remember, I just didn't think you'd walk into my room without making sure I was even dressed," I said lightly.
"Hails, I've known you for 10 plus years, I've been part of your security team since we were seven. I've seen more of you in the past six years than I've seen of any female I've dated. It wouldn't have bothered me if you were naked," he said.
"Fair enough, but why are you in my room?" I asked him.
"Give me your phone, Hailey. That email has a trap link that will allow the sender access to all of the passwords for your work, and the passcodes for the security system both for your home and your office. I'd hate for you to click the link and cause a massive security breach," he said.
"How did you know about the link if you only get a text and not a copy of the email? You're not planning to backstab me and are working for Christopher, are you?" I asked, starting to get really pissed off.
"I knew about the email link because I'm the one who created the code for it. I'd hate for you to be hurt by someone trying to hack into our systems. You've been nothing but kind to me, and I've treated you like a sister our whole lives. I would never do anything to jeopardize your or Jess's safety. You're both important to me," he said.
"If I find any proof of you trying to jeopardize me or my family, you will regret it," I said. "Now, give me back my phone and get out of my room." Once he was out of my room, I locked my door once again and read the email. There was no sign of a hidden link anywhere in the email. I couldn't automatically rule out Ace as a potential danger to me and Jess, so I'd have to do a security check on both my email and my home and office before I could even go to sleep.
I quietly made my way to my office and went inside. Once inside, I opened my laptop, launched the security test, and waited to see if there was a security breach. Nothing looked out of the ordinary thus far, but just to be safe, I looked at my security cameras. I went through each screen one at a time, looking for anything unusual. When I got to the camera overlooking the gate, the security test came back with no breach being shown. I should've trusted Ace more, but when I didn't see a link in the email, I had to make sure he didn't delete the email and send a copy of it from his phone. I checked my deleted emails and didn't find it, so I pulled it up on my computer and checked the deleted logs that automatically backed up to my laptop just in case, and couldn't find it. So, he didn't delete the email and sent a false copy. There was no link in the email.
