Chapter Twenty Celia watched the second-hand tick slowly around the clock face, bringing the time ever closer to one o’clock and the end of Dora’s shift. She knew that any moment now the housekeeper would finish her chores for the day, and announce she was off, leaving Celia alone once more in the house. Celia had been so happy to see the woman when she arrived, she had almost hugged her. With William champing at the bit to leave for work, Celia was dreading being all alone, especially after the previous evening. The two women spent the best part of an hour in the kitchen, drinking coffee and discussing the séance. Although Dora, ever conscientious, kept reminding Celia that she was not being paid to drink coffee, Celia kept her there, talking. The woman was an incredibly good listener
