Chapter Forty-Two
Carl surveyed the blackened walls and smouldering roof beams that had been Pauline Francis’ house.
He knew the family had survived the fire, even though Pauline’s daughter had been taken to City Hospital suffering from smoke inhalation.
‘Looks like a petrol bomb through that window,’ said the Fire Inspector, pointing at the smashed window in front of them. ‘Found the remains of the bottle inside. They’re lucky they had a smoke alarm.’
‘So, no chance this was accidental?’ said Carl.
‘Somebody wanted this place to burn,’ said the Fire Inspector.
Carl turned to SC Charlie Head who had responded to the initial call-out. ‘Any witnesses, Charlie?’
‘Woman across the street says she heard the sound of glass breaking and someone running around two, but nothing really useful
