“So, what do you guys do here?” asked Eve. Kiara was sitting by Luke on the big wide window sill in one of hundreds of halls. Eve couldn’t find peace ever since she saw Theodor’s mother. And Lucifer’s wife. What could have possibly happened so awful to a woman that she turns into a personified reminder of death?
“We can do whatever we want but this castle is killing me” Kiara sighed. “I’ve been here for years and years, yet I never age. Every single brick of this damn prison is cursed and soaked in the dark magic.”
“There has to be way out of here.” Eve spoke. Luke looked at her with the same look in his eyes as the first day they’ve met.
“You could kill yourself” he implied “but if you die in the house ruled by Lucifer, where do you think your soul goes?”
“Nonsense. All souls belong to God. He decides who to give away and who to keep in eternal joy. Also, who to send back to Earth.”
“Of course, Eve, the co-author of the Bible knows it all” Luke got off the window sill. “If you are one of God’s magical creations, why he is not coming to rescue you?”
Luke ran his fingers through his hair, turned around and walked away without adding anything else.
“You don’t want him to come, believe me” said Eve, but Luke didn’t hear her. However, Kiara was staring at her with her eyes wide open.
“What do you mean send back to Earth?” Kiara wasn’t even blinking.
“Life is like school. You pass all your moral exams – Eden. You fail – repeat course. And if you sin so bad that even God loses his hopes for you, they send you down here to hell.”
Kiara drowned in her thoughts. Eve took Luke’s spot and sat down by her. She watched how Kiara’s brows frowned a little bit, she bit her lip, just slightly, without thinking, but this small gesture made Eve feel weak on her knees. She would give the world away just to feel the taste of those lips.
“Here you are” they heard voice from far away of the hall. It was some man with black suit and red tie. “Lord Lucifer would like to see you for a dinner” he added then disappeared immediately.
“Just one of the butlers. Don’t mind them” Kiara spoke before Eve could ask who that man was. “You should help me get you ready, you don’t want to be late and make Lucifer mad, do you?”
“If I haven’t made him enough angry already” Eve said sarcastically.
Kiara was so excited to pick a fancy dress for Eve. She wasn’t’ sure why she needed to look fancy for dinner with her biggest enemy and more importantly why he would ask for her company.
“This yellow shade goes so well with your skin tone” Kiara took out some full-length gown from the wardrobe. It was a delicate, strapless mustard color dress which seemed especially made for Eve.
“You look just…” Kiara zipped the dress and stepped back “just wow”.
Eve turned around in front of giant mirror. She felt how dress began to spin together with her. She cannot remember last time she wore something that well-fitting and elegant.
“Grab these and rush to the dining hall.” Kiara handed her pair of heels. “Lucifer hates waiting”.
Eve did as she was told, nut she still couldn’t come up with any reason Lucifer would want her to accompany him by dinner table. She just knew it was definitely not going to be anything good.
The doors throughout the halls were busted wide open. The same butler was standing by them greeting Eve from far away. He led her to the hall. Lucifer was standing by the table already. He did not say anything when he saw Eve, but his eyes sparkled for a split second.
“Please, Eve, be my guest. Sit down, make it feel like home” he showed her fancy royal-like chair.
Or like a prison. Eve sat down slowly, keeping eye on the doors as any moment Lucifer would jump trying to attack her and she would have to run for her life.
But nothing happened. They sat down and butlers started bringing in tons of food, wine and golden plates. It looks like dinner for village rather than two of them, immortal human, who don’t need to eat in order to survive.
“Please, help yourself, try anything that has caught your pretty eye” Lucifer did not turn his sight away from her ever since she came to the hall.
“You know that in this castle food is tasteless” Eve said.
“We still can pretend it does.” He finally smiled. But it turned out so fake and forced that Eve thought he hadn’t have had a real smile in decades.
Eve let the butler fill her glass with dark wine. She closed her eyes and tried to remember that rich and flavorful taste of the wine of her and Adam’s wine cellar. She immediately put glass down as the memory in front of her eyes brought back all the darkest moments of her life.
“You all right, honey?” asked Lucifer with a voice that made every single word sound poisonous and seductive.
“Why?” Eve watched him without blinking “Why did you want this dinner?”
Lucifer took sip from his glass. He closed his eyes as it was best drink he has had in his life.
“You see, Eve. You did a bad thing. You have ruined plan I was developing for years, prisoned in this castle while God has all the Eden and Earth to rule and savor every fruit of it. “He opened his eyes. “Dear, dear Eve, do you see what I have? Mild wine and a sun which never rises. I want to be king of it. I want revenge.”
“Go to hell. Be the king of fear and agony” Eve straightened her back. “Why you want Eden so bad?”
Lucifer chuckled. He sighed and let butler fill his glass again.
“Here, you drink poisons and you cannot tell.” said Lucifer. Eve immediately put her glass down.” Hell is place where suffering is casualty. I want to bring it to Eden. To archangels which I thought I can count on. Ones who turned back to me, who let God punish me. You want revenge too, Eve, don’t lie.”
Eve felt her palms become sweaty. She tried to keep straight face.
“God wanted you to be clueless forever and to live in this fake fairytale alongside innocent animals and birds. He wanted you to be fools forever so he can manipulate you and Adam.” Lucifer’s tone become more and more passionate and louder with every word.
Eve felt how the blood started to boil in her veins. She was ready to grab a golden fork and attack Lucifer.
“It was only one little innocent apple” Lucifer’s eyes were so concentrated to Eve’s he forgot to blink.“ One apple is the price of eternity of suffering? Is it fair, Eve? You had to leave the only place in this world where you can feel peace.”
Eve stood up all shaking from anger and desperately trying to hide her true emotions. She wanted to scream, disagree, throw something at him, but she knew she had to leave as fast as she could. Lucifer was the grandmaster of manipulation and bringing worst out of people. She can’t let him go on.
“God forced you to leave and remain with the love of your life forever. And it made you go insane, right dear?” Lucifer enjoyed watching how Eve was losing it. “You went insane and killed a man. Your husband. Your literal other half.”
“Shut up!” She screamed so loud that butler dropped his tray. “Shut up, shut up, shut up” she pushed chair back so fast it hit wall. Eve’s hands were shaking, she was so mad and desperate like a beast cornered by a hunter.
“You cannot run away from the truth, Eve!” he laughed while Eve stormed out of the hall. “Admit it, that was one damn tasty apple, honey!”
She cried from anger and all the mix of feelings Lucifer has woken inside of her. She killed a man, she killed her husband, she killed the creation of God, her father. She ran away, she betrayed him, she sinned… and now she was stuck down here.
“No, no, I’m leaving” she whispered to herself breathing heavily.
She was feeling drunk going from wall to wall like a lost soul. The doors were opened like always. She stepped outside, but before she made it to the forest to hear same voice telling her to go back, she heard horses. Definitely horses and the sound was getting louder and louder.
“Eve get back in here” Kiara ran outside and dragged her back by arm. As soon as she fell on castle’s floor the gates closed in front of her, but she still could hear the sound of a carriage and at least couple of horses.
“Lord, we have guests” announced Luke when Lucifer came to check why gates were being closed and doors locked.
“Very well, get the soldiers ready” he looked at Eve who was trembling and incoherent and smiled “You shall get ready too.”
