Chapter 2

Abby ran into the bathroom while continuously retching. But nothing comes out of her mouth except water. "What happened to you, Abby? Are you sick?" her best friend Mavi followed her inside the bathroom and asked with concern. Mavi was alone in life and had inherited a house and lot from her deceased father, so she had her own home. When she found out what Abby's father did to her, she offered Abby to live in her house. Abby immediately agreed to her best friend's offer, fearing that what her father did might happen again. Next time, she might not be able to escape. While her father was not at home, she asked Mavi to accompany her to get her things. Since then, she has not shown herself to her father. Mavi's house is in another city, so Abby's father can no longer find her. "I don't know. I haven't even eaten because I have no appetite," Abby weakly replied to her friend. Her friend assisted her out of the bathroom and laid her on the bed because she felt weak. "I think you should get a check-up with the doctor, Abby. We don't have school today, so I'll go with you. I'm worried about you because you've been like that for several days," suggested Mavi. That day, Abby went to the hospital and Mavi accompanied her for a check-up. She often felt dizzy and always wanted to sleep. She was worried she might be sick. She couldn't afford to get sick now, especially since it's their last exam before graduation. While sitting outside the doctor's clinic who examined her, Abby couldn't understand why she felt nervous. A faint voice wanted to enter her mind, telling her why she had been feeling this way in these past days. But she didn't want to entertain what that voice was saying, so she quickly pushed it out of her mind. "Abby Evangelista!" Abby suddenly stood up when she heard the doctor call her name. Her friend also stood up from sitting and held her hand as they went to the doctor's clinic together. "How is the result of the check-up, Doc? Am I sick?" Abby asked the doctor nervously. The doctor shook her head at Abby and smiled. "No. You are not sick, Miss Evangelista. You're just pregnant. You are six weeks pregnant. All the symptoms you mentioned to me earlier are signs of your pregnancy." The news Abby heard from the doctor hit her like a bomb exploding in her face. The little voice in her mind was right. She was pregnant. She was pregnant, and the father was the man she had a one-night stand with. But she wasn’t ready to be a mother. She couldn’t even support herself yet. How could she support her child? "Thank you very much, Doctor," Abby heard Mavi say to the doctor before pulling her out of the clinic. Her friend was the one who talked to the doctor because she suddenly became mute after hearing the result of her examination. "Explain this to me, Abby. How did you get pregnant when you don’t even have a boyfriend?" Mavi immediately asked as soon as they stepped out of the clinic. Abby sat down on the chair as if she were not herself. It only happened once and she got pregnant right away. She didn’t know whether to consider herself lucky or unlucky. "I'm pregnant," Abby whispered, still looking lost. "Yes. You are pregnant. Who is the father of your child, Abby?" Abby did not immediately answer her friend's question. They went home to Mavi's house first, and while lying on her bed, she recounted the events of that night that she hadn't told Mavi. This time, she didn't hide anything from her friend, not even the smallest detail of what happened. "That's what happened after I escaped from Mr. Suarez's men who were chasing me back then, Mavi. I'm sorry I kept this from you. I planned to bury that incident but that won't happen anymore because I got pregnant," Abby confessed about everything that happened. Mavi hugged Abby tightly. "Don't worry. I'm here. I'll help you raise your child." Abby couldn't help but cry with overwhelming happiness. She thanked God that even though she wasn't given a good father, she was blessed with a very kind and true friend. The days quickly passed, turning into months until Abby gave birth to her twin children. A girl and a boy whom she named Ashley and Ashtine. Just as Mavi had promised, she helped her raise the twins. They did not struggle financially because, aside from the house and lot, Mavi also inherited a small business. They used their earnings for their education and raising the two children. Time passed quickly, and Abby didn't realize that her twins were already six years old. "Mom! Didn't you say we were going to watch a movie at the mall today? Get up and take a bath so we can leave. We're just waiting for you." Ashtine shook Abby's shoulder vigorously to stop her from going back to sleep. "Okay, fine. I'll get up now, Sir. Just wait for me outside," Abby replied to her child with a smile. "I will give you ten minutes only. You should be outside by then, okay?" Ashtine said, sounding like an adult. "Yes, Sir!" Abby shook her head while laughing at Ashtine. She didn't know why Ashtine spoke so dominantly while Ashley was sweet and carefree. However, both of her twins were kind and obedient. Sometimes they looked for their father. But when she remained silent, meaning she didn't want to answer their questions, and they didn't insist on asking again. It's not that she didn't want to answer them. Because she also didn't know her twin's father. So what is she going to say to them about their father? Yesterday was the birthday of Abby's twins, and they celebrated it at school with their classmates. She was absent from the birthday celebration, so she promised to watch a movie with them when she wasn't working. She had only been working at her new company as a designer for a month, so she couldn't take a leave yet. Abby is indeed fortunate because, out of the many applicants aspiring to work at the largest company in the country, she was one of those accepted. Even when she was still in college, it had been her dream to work at La Corja Empire. And finally, that dream came true last month. As Abby promised, they watched a movie at the mall and afterward ate at her twins' favorite fast-food restaurant. Abby's twins wanted to play in the playhouse, so they left the kids there while she and Mavi went grocery shopping. It was safe to leave the kids there because the two attendants at the playhouse wouldn’t let them out. Besides, they had done this several times before, allowing them to shop for grocery stocks while her twins played. After an hour, Abby and Mavi returned to the playhouse to pick up the twins. However, they were surprised to find Ashley crying while being comforted by one of the two playhouse attendants. "What happened, Ashley? Why are you crying?" Her daughter immediately hugged Abby and cried loudly. "Ashtine is missing, Mom!" "What?!" Abby and Mavi exclaimed simultaneously upon hearing what Ashley said. Abby angrily confronted the two playhouse attendants. "Where is my child? Why is my child missing? Didn't you guard all the kids and let them out?" "Ma'am, I'm sorry. Many mothers registered earlier, so we didn't notice that one of the twins had left the playhouse," the attendant apologized tearfully. Abby held her head in extreme worry for Ashtine. Her children were not disobedient and they followed her instructions. She was sure that Ashtine had a reason for suddenly leaving the playhouse. "Stay with Mommy Mavi, Ashley. I will look for your brother, okay?" Abby told her child before turning to her friend. "You stay here, Mavi. I'll be the one to look for Ashtine. I'm sure he won't go far." When Mavi nodded, Abby immediately left to search around for Ashtine. She had been looking for her child for ten minutes when she finally saw him. She smiled and felt relieved when she saw him sitting next to the guard. She was about to approach him when suddenly, a tall man approached Ashtine and carried him in his arms. "Where did you get separated from your parents, Ashtine? I'm sure they're very worried about you," Abby heard the man say to her child. "In the playhouse. My twin is there," Ashtine quickly replied. When the man turned in Abby's direction, her eyes suddenly widened upon recognizing his face. She couldn't be mistaken. Even though six years had passed since that incident, she would never forget his handsome face. He was truly the man she had slept with six years ago! He was the father of Ashtine and Ashley!
