Madeline's pov
A gasp left my lips as I startled into consciousness.
It took me a second to realize my clothes were sticking to my skin and I was drenched in water.
“You were asleep for far too long.” A familiar voice called out to me.
Memories of the last few hours flooded my mind as my eyes focused on the adorni. I groaned as I tried to move and I realized my hands were tied behind my back.
“What did you do to me?” My voice came out slurred.
“All you need to do is answer all my questions and I'll let you go.” The adorni announced and I backed away from him.
How had I gotten into this mess? And worse of all, how was I going to get out of here?
I really wished I had listened to Lena and Lucas.
Lucas…would he be searching for me now?
“Shall we begin?” The adorni asked as he approached me and yanked me by my hair till I was staring up at him.
“I have nothing to tell you,” I replied and a cry escaped my lips as he gripped my hair tightly.
“I really don't want to have to harm you Madeline.” The adorni whispered as he squatted before me.
“Just tell me which pack you belong to and the quickest way to get in undetected. That's all I want to know,” the adorni stated calmly but I knew it was only a trap. Once I began to talk they would try to squeeze every bit of information out of me.
“I don't know,” I told him and his eyes flashed.
“This is the last time I'm going to ask-” I spat right at his face before he could finish his sentence.
He stilled for a second before his fingers moved to his face and he wiped the fluid off.
“You little b***h,” he chuckled right before the back of his free hand came flying towards my face and sent me right to the floor.
My cheek burned and pain erupted within me but I didn't dare move.
“Let go of me,” I screamed desperately as the Adorni gripped my hair once more and began to drag me out of the cell.
Where the hell was he taking me?
Panic settled within me but I struggled despite the searing pain to my scalp.
“Where are you taking me, let me go!” I clawed at his hands as he dragged me along and I was sure my hair was going to uproot from my head.
The cool night breeze touched my skin the second we stepped out and the only light was illuminated from the moon.
This is it, this was my chance to o escape before he took me wherever he intended to.
I focused on digging my nails into the adorni’s wrist until he began to bleed but even then he didn't let go of me but his grip loosened for a second and that was all the opportunity I needed.
I yanked my hair out of his grip, ignoring the fire which shot through my scalp.
“What the hell do you think you are doing?” He asked just before he lunged for me and I barely managed to side step him.
My legs broke out into a sprint on their own accord, even though I knew I wouldn't get far before he caught up to me.
I ignored the tears blurring my eyes as I tried to reach for my wolf but it was hopeless.
I let out a desperate sigh just as the adorni jumped on me from behind and I went crashing into the floor.
This time, I didn't give myself time to recover as I thrashed underneath him.
“There's the feisty pet I know,” to my utter disgust the adorni seemed…excited.
He abruptly stilled onto me with wide eyes before his body went slack and his weight fell on me.
What the hell?
I struggled to push him off me and when I finally managed to rise, I took a hesitant step back as a man with a mask stood before me.
“What did you do to him?” I asked.
“If you want to leave this place alive then follow me.” He was a hunter. I could tell the second his scent reached my nose but there was also a hint of cider wood.
I weighed my options.
Why was a hunter trying to help me? For all he knew I was a wolf.
If I didn't follow him then I was as good as dead.
Either way, I was going to die.
The man must have seen I had made my decision because he turned around and began to walk away.
I struggled to keep up with him but my entire body ached and each step I took felt like hell.
The man turned back and let out a sigh before he approached me.
“What are you-” the rest of my sentence was cut off as he lifted me into his arms and I had to clutch his neck for stability.
I marveled as he hastened his steps and he moved as though I weighed nothing.
Something stirred within me and for a second I could have sworn it was my wolf but then it went silent again.
My eyes grew heavy the more I listened to his racing heart and somewhere along the way I must have given in because the next time my eyes peered open I was in a tent and for a wild second I thought I was back with Lena until I heard the sound of metal before a sharp sword was pointed at me.
I leaned my head back and my eyes met hard brown ones. The man had taken off his mask.
“Why do the adorni want a human? Tell me everything you know about the wolves and the adorni if you want to live.” The man commanded as he pressed the sword to my neck and a drop of blood trickled down my skin.
