The sun was setting when we pulled into the driveway. It was the most picturesque setting. All the pinks and orange showcasing the house and land that I had always dreamed about. Which made it feel like I had done the right thing for my family by moving us here. I couldn’t believe that we were starting over but I didn’t have a choice in that. Looking at the house with a wraparound porch and a pond in the back just felt right.
The kids were overjoyed that we had finally made it to the house, seeing as we were all packed in like sardines. Remington leaned forward asking “This is all ours, Mom?” It brought me great joy in replying “Yes, it is!” The boys looked at one another and not being able to wait any longer jumped out of the vehicle before I could get down the driveway and took off to the pond at full speed. They got to the pond before I could stop them and jumped in. Seeing the joy on their faces stopped me from being annoyed that they were now soaking wet and would be that way for a while because I couldn’t remember if I had packed the towels in with us or if they were in the moving truck that would be here tomorrow morning.
Shaking my head I parked the SUV, turning towards the sleeping Angel in the back. Solene, my precious baby girl was still asleep somehow. I couldn’t believe she didn’t wake with all the ruckus that the boys had done when jumping out of the vehicle. Getting out of the car, I go to wake her before her brothers came back for her. “Solene, honey we are here, you better wake before the boys come drag you out.” No more than the words were out of my mouth I hear Kingston yell for her to come join them. It always amazed me that they loved when she tagged along with them. Most siblings liked having their own space and alone time but, somehow I won with mine because they hated being away from each other.
Solene not wanting to wake from her restful spot moaned and rolled over. She loved her sleep. It didn’t matter where she was at. When she was younger we would always find her in the oddest sleeping spot. It turned out to be a game with Remington and Kingston. When they would come home from school usually was about the time Solene fell asleep for her naps and they would go looking for the new spot she had decided was the perfect spot. They once found her in the cabinet with the towels that I had folded and put away that day. They would always pick her up and carry her to their room with them. They would take their covers and pillows to make a little bed for her on their floor so she could be with them while they spread out their homework until she woke up for them to play with her.The bond never stopped. Even with them being 16 years old and Solene being 10, it should have change how much time they spent with each other, it didn’t.
King deciding that I was taking too long in waking Solene up, ran back to get her. “King, don’t you even think about it” I had advise him. With a smile on his face he swooped down and grabbed her up. “You know she will kill you.” All he did was laugh and walked back towards the pond. I could hear Remington laughing at his brother’s intentions. Knowing I’d hear a scream soon, I decided I should probably start unpacking the SUV, letting them enjoy the last bit of light they had today.
It wasn’t easy leaving their home and changing the way our family looked. It had only been a month since Erik and I got a divorce. It didn’t seem to bother the boys as much as it had Solene. She had always tried to get her dad to notice her in any way she could but it never seemed to work. The boys would fight with their dad so often about it that it was came a running joke with them when he did try to make time for any of them. It was sad. I never understood how Erik could just walk away from these beautiful kids, when he decided that he had, had enough of being with us.
It didn’t matter what I said about the matter the boys always say that we are better off without him around. Even tho I agree with them without telling them I agree. I try to put the blame on myself than their dad. I wanted them to have the best relationship with him as I could give them. Even if I had to fight for it myself.
Grabbing one of the boxes from the back I finally heard Solene shout out, after I heard the splash from her being tossed in. All I could do is laugh because I know I’m going to get an earful for that one.
“I can’t believe you would toss me in while I was sleeping,” Solene screamed. Remington bobbed laughing close to her to make sure she was okay when she was tossed in, “SJ, you are always sleeping so when would have been the right time. She turned murderous eyes on him and she swam toward the shore to get to King who was lying on the ground laughing.
