PROLOGUE
ESTEFANIA
It was the happiest day of my life because I was going to marry the man of my dreams. Joshua Chevalier was the person I had been in love with my whole life.
I walked down the aisle with my heart pounding so desperately for him to say "yes, I do" that I felt it might burst out of my chest.
I had walked alone down the aisle because I had no family. My friend Josue had offered to walk me down the aisle and hand me over to the love of my life, but I had firmly refused. I wanted to walk towards him alone.
Joshua greeted me with a smile on his lips and a teary-eyed look when he saw me, with those blue eyes that I loved so much.
"You look beautiful, Fanny. You're the most beautiful woman in this world," he said. It seemed like he was swallowing with difficulty. Like something had gotten stuck. I smiled at him. I felt my cheeks flush, as I had fulfilled my purpose of being the most beautiful bride for him. Despite being accustomed to his compliments, that day was special for both of us. He took my hand and we turned towards the altar.
The ceremony started before the eyes of all the guests. It was the most awaited day of my life. After what I had experienced in the past, this was all I had wished for. Joshua had been that ray of light in the midst of the storm.
"Joshua Chevalier, do you accept Estefania Falero as your wife, to love and respect her every day of your life, to take care of her in sickness and in health until death do you part?" the priest asked.
Joshua remained silent for a moment. He looked into my eyes and I felt his hands trembling under mine. For a moment, anguish overwhelmed me as I saw a glimpse of regret in him.
"Joshua?" I whispered with a lump in my throat.
"Yes," he suddenly reacted to my voice, "I do," he said.
He smiled nervously. The priest asked me the same question and I decided not to pay attention to my fiancé's attitude, it was just nerves.
Saying the words "Yes, I do" was what marked us for life.
"You may kiss the bride," the priest announced.
I felt a tingling in my chest and the silly butterflies fluttering in my stomach. It was done. I was Joshua Chevalier's wife. He uncovered my face, pushing aside the veil. I was the luckiest bride, and I demonstrated it with my smile. A smile dedicated to him.
"From this moment on, you will regret marrying me. Karma is great and your sins haunt you." He smiled maliciously to pretend in front of the others. I was petrified by his words.
He kissed me on the lips, and for the first time, I couldn't respond. It was a cold and undesired kiss.
‘Fortunate bride? It was the joke of the year.’
The world crumbled before me. My darkest secret had been discovered, and I was about to pay for it.
