A wave of nervous excitement ran through her as she felt a rush of heat down her spine. It was finally time for the race. All the racers revved their engines. A lady, dressed in shorts and a crop top, stepped forward holding a red flag. She placed the whistle to her lips and moved in front of the cars. The tension thickened. “One… two…!” The engines roared louder. Then—GO! With a sharp burst of acceleration, the racers sped down the road. Cars zoomed past obstacles, each driver fighting for the lead. Jeremiah was ahead. Frederick quickly caught up to him, while Toby pushed hard from behind, trying to close the gap. The race intensified. Jeremiah and Frederick locked into a fierce battle, each determined to win. But this race was no longer just about speed. It was about Serena. As they sped forward, the road narrowed. Ahead lay a dangerous pothole. Jeremiah remembered something his father—also a racer—had taught him: always study the road before race day. Because of that, Jeremiah knew the danger ahead. At the last second, he swerved and dodged the pothole, having encountered the pothole he saw yesterday. Frederick wasn’t so lucky. His car hit it hard. Everything seemed to slow down. The tires screeched violently. The car lost control. Frederick tried to brake—but it was too late. The car flipped. Jeremiah’s eyes widened. Without thinking, he slammed his brakes and stopped. Jumping out of his car, he rushed toward the wreckage. Frederick’s car had capsized. “f**k!” Jeremiah shouted, running as fast as he could. He reached the car just in time and pulled Frederick out. BOOM! The car exploded behind them.As this was happening police men were alerted. The whole racing rally was upside down as everyone where departing,so that they not be caught. Both of them fell to the ground, gasping for air. Meanwhile, Serena watched in horror, with the help of the scene which the drone was still videoing. “What just happened?!” she cried, tears streaming down her face. Without hesitation, she rushed to help them with the help car she stole. Seeing their injuries, she quickly arranged for Frederick to be taken to the hospital. Jeremiah was also hurt, but he didn’t say much. At the hospital, nurses attended to Frederick immediately. Serena signed the bills, her hands trembling. But when she turned— Jeremiah was gone. Later that night, Serena couldn’t stop thinking about him. She snuck to his place. His room was accessible through the balcony, so she quietly climbed up and slipped inside. There, she saw him. Jeremiah was shirtless, trying to treat his wounds with a first aid kit. He was struggling. Serena felt a deep sense of pity. “Jeremiah…” she said softly. He turned, surprised. “Serena?” “Can I help you with that?” “It’s nothing,” he replied. But she insisted. She took the cotton wool and gently began cleaning his wounds. Jeremiah stayed quiet as she worked. For a moment, their eyes met. There was something there—something deep, unspoken. Jeremiah found himself lost in her gaze, wondering how someone so strong could also be so gentle. Just then— A knock, his aunty Linda. “Jeremiah, are you okay?” a voice called from outside. Quickly, Jeremiah covered Serena’s mouth and whispered, “Stay quiet.” “I’m fine!” he answered. After a pause, the voice faded away. The room fell silent again. The moment between them had changed. Serena finished bandaging him and stood up. “Good night,” she said softly. “Good night.” She quietly left the way she came. Back in her room, Serena showered and changed into her nightdress. The house was completely silent—everyone had gone to sleep. But she couldn’t sleep. Not after everything that had happened.
