24 Hours Prior
Rae's point of view:
When a witch or wizard turns 16 she or he gets to choose a type of magic to practice. Up until you turn 16 you have the ability to try out and learn every type of magic. I have always favored water and fire magic the most. There are plenty more though ranging from necromancy to healing. Necromancy is considered a dark art and very few witches ever choose it and even fewer agreed to teach it to those who were underage and exploring the magic world. As a result, no one in my village knew how to perform it. That was fine by me, I didn't have much interest in it anyways.
My older brother, Alex, loved to help people and chose healing magic at his birthday ceremony a few years ago. He now practices in a human hospital miraculous healing his patients, at least it seems that way to the humans’ eyes. The down side for him is he doesn't have a way to defend himself if a war broke out between the witches and werewolves again. It has been 5 years since the last war and the peace is starting to wear thin. For that reason, I might choose fire at my ceremony tomorrow. That way I can throw fireballs at any werewolf who dares threaten my family or my village.
Besides getting stuck with one form of magic when you turn 16 your hair also changes to match your chosen path. My brother has golden streaks running through his hair representing his healing nature. My neighbor had dark green hair and could get any plant to grow by just placing her hands on it. A skill I tried and never mastered. My friend Natalie had her ceremony last year and choose romance magic. Her hair is a lovely shade of pink. She makes the most powerful love potions I have ever seen. Last time someone unknowingly drank one of her potions they fell in love with the person they despised for 8 months before they finally snapped out of it. It was amusing to watch, though they were quite angry when they realized what happened.
Children's hair tends to be rainbow as they explore all the magic options. However, as you get closer and closer to your 16 birthday more and more colors drop out eventually leaving you one color representing your magic of choosing. Normally a few months before your ceremony your hair settles on its lifelong color. I have even seen a few people have their hair color settle years before their 16th birthday. The strange thing is mine hasn't settle on one color yet. It shifts between red and blue depending on the hour and I only have 24 hours left until my ceremony. I haven't heard of someone's hair shifting colors this close to their birthday. It worries me and makes me wonder what is going to happen tomorrow. My friends and family tell me not to worry. But I can't help but feel like something is wrong with me. At least my brother has the day off for my ceremony. He's always able to cheer me up.
