The Search for Eli

783 Words
Rae’s point of view The weekend had finally arrived. My brother had already left for work leaving me alone for the day. Now was the perfect opportunity to go look for Eli. I laced up my boots and headed into the forest walking in the direction of Lunar territory for the first time.  I was both excited and nervous as I ventured deeper into the forest listening to the crunch of leaves under my feet and birds singing somewhere just out of sight. My footsteps were bringing me a closer to the border between Stonebrook and Lunar territory. I wonder if the werewolves will know that I am in their territory. I shook my head, no that was silly. Werewolves had a great sense of smell and would be able to smell me if they were patrolling nearby but, it was not like they had some magical barrier announcing the arrival of intruder. I took a deep breath willing myself to take the last step. Holding my breath, I waited and listened. No one came out to grab me and all I could hear were the birds. Wandering further into Lunar territory I wondered how I was going to find Eli. Would the forest appear different if someone as magical as Eli lived nearby? He would have to be using powerful magic to hid himself for so long from the werewolves. But what magic would he use? Why go through all the trouble in the first place to hide himself here? He could easily live in Stonebrook or another magic town for that matter. So why make a home in the middle of the forest in enemy territory? So many questions swirled in my head but none of them really helped to me to know what to look for. I sighed, wondering if my trip was going to end up being a big waste of time. One way to find out, I guess.  After another 30 minutes I felt the hum of high level magic in the air. Normally you cannot feel magic, and if you aren’t a magic user yourself you would not feel it at all. There must be a ton of it saturating the area for me to pick it up. I slowed my pace looking around for anything that seemed unusual. The forest looked greener and more alive here. I wonder if one of Eli’s power is the manipulation of plants. There was a creek winding its way lazily through the trees. The magic hum increased as I approached it. I could feel the magic and see the work of it in the nature around me. It was beautiful and it seemed the animals really appreciated the extra growth. There were more birds here than any area I had passed so far and I had seen at least 6 bunnies playing in the bushes. Despite feeling and seeing the effects of the magic, I had yet to see any sign of the one behind it. If I were not a witch, I would just think the creek running through this area brought extra life to and there was nothing extraordinarily special about it. The only good thing about stumbling onto this area is that I know Eli is still here somewhere. The magic would not be humming if he had left the area years ago. It is still strange to me that he would stick around here after the war and never once come into town.             I sat cross legged next to the creek playing with a lily pad that was close to the water’s edge. It was peaceful feeling here despite being in Lunar territory and while I knew I shouldn’t hang around too long in case the werewolves found me I couldn’t help but want to stay. If I waited a little bit Eli might make himself know.             After about 20 minutes I decided to stand up, my legs were starting to fall asleep. I dusted the dirt off of me and turned around. I nearly screamed when I saw the figure who had been standing behind me. How did I not here him? As my heart calmed down I took in his appearance knowing immediately he must be Eli and one of the werewolves. His hair was split into two colors just like me. He had one half green and other blue with eyes to match. He was powerful indeed and one of his powers even matched mine.             “Eli?” I managed to squeak out as I recovered from my scare.             “Nice to finally meet you, Rae.” Eli said in reply.
