The next day.
I need to buy the things and materials that I need for my competition next week. I need to prepare early so that everything will be set before I leave Singapore. Every time I have a competition outside the country, I always prepare ahead of time. I don’t want to miss an important thing. I asked Hannah to go out with me to buy the things that I needed.
“Hey Hann, are you available this afternoon? Can you please help me buy the things that I need for the tournament next week?”
“This afternoon? Sorry, but I am still busy with the thesis that we are working on. Can we have it next time?”
“It’s okay. You are a graduating student. I know how busy you are. I thought you were free today. When will your graduation be?” I asked.
“Next week Friday! At last.”
“Great! I will be there. I can still attend your graduation day. My flight to San Diego will be the next day.”
“Oh yeah! I forgot that you have your tournament in San Diego.” She said
Lately, Hannah has been busy with her thesis paper. But, she’s different this time. Before, even though she was busy with her academic subjects, she still had time with me. She can still text me or we can still go out to eat outside. Later, he met this new guy on the prom night. She’s different. She spends more time with him than spending time with me. I tried to understand her. Maybe I am jealous, since I feel something different when I am with her. And honestly speaking, I miss her when she’s not around. She has a guy friend, but I feel uneasy every time she’s with her new friend.
Friday morning around 9 a.m when I arrived at the venue for Hannah’s graduation. I saw her. She looks happy. It is nice to see her wearing that graduation uniform. It feels like time flies so fast. She will be in her college days in a few months. I hope she won’t forget about me. I hope she will stay.
“Finally, you are almost there. You will enter college soon.” I told her.
“And you will call me ‘Atty. Hannah’.” She said and smiled at me.
“Soon. Hahaha. By the way, are you available later? Let’s celebrate.” I ask her.
“Uh-hmm. Don’t get mad, Gin, but we will go out later with friends. You can join if you want to. We will go out with other graduate students.”
“Let me guess, we will do it NEXT TIME?” I smiled when I replied to her.
“Are you mad?” she asked.
“Oh no! I am just teasing you. HAHAHA. Did he confess to you?”
She smiled happy when I asked her if her new guy confessed to her.
“Sshh. You will know it soon.”
I know that something is different. I know that the new guy likes Hannah. I can sense it. After graduation, I congratulated Hannah and her friends. We took pictures. I want to have pictures with Hannah before I go home since I have an early flight to San Diego tomorrow. Unfortunately, she’s so busy. We only have pictures of Hannah and her friends. After that, I told Hannah that I needed to go home. I needed to go home to prepare my things for my early flight and also, I started to get hurt every time she rejected my invitation. She’s always focused on her new friends. I am happy that she has a new friend, but what bothers me is when she treats the new guy differently. I am jealous because she has more time with him than me. I went to sleep early since I have a flight around 3 am. I texted Hannah. I asked her how the graduation party was.
“How’s the party?”
“Guess what? He confessed.”
“I told you. He likes you.” I replied, but I felt mad and jealous that time.
“What should I do?” she asked me.
“Do you like him?” I asked Hannah if she really liked the guy.
“Yeah? I think so?”
“Huh? You are not sure? Make sure. Do you like him??” I asked.
“YES! I have liked him since the day I met him during Prom Night.” She said directly to me.
“There! You know what to do.”
I feel sad when I hear that she likes Andrew. My feelings for Hannah are not only as a best friend. I love her. I don’t know but this feeling is different. It was Sunday morning in San Diego, California. We arrived on Saturday evening. Because it’s Sunday, it’s our rest day for tomorrow’s competition. I received a call from Hannah from Singapore. She made a long-distance call just to inform me that she’s in a relationship with her new guy. If felt weak after I heard the news about her relationship. Is it game over? I feel like someone stabbed me deep inside. I couldn’t help it but I told her that I was busy with the competition and I dropped the call after. I don’t want to hear anything about them. I don’t want to get bothered because I have competition that I need to focus on. I don’t want my attention to get divided because of that. I felt mad and jealous but I needed to hide it. No mater what.
From that day when I knew that they were in a relationship. I was so bothered. I feel empty, I can’t even think properly. My coach is worried about me. The competition will be tomorrow. I told my coach that I was okay.
Monday morning when the competition started. I didn’t receive any texts or calls from Hannah. Every time I have a competition, she’s the first one who will cheer me up. She calls or texts me if she’s not around during the competition. This time is different. She didn’t even text or call me. Every round that I fight, my mind can't think clearly, but I still manage to win every round until the final round. I received a text from Hannah during our break time. She said,
“Hey, Gin!!! We are going to the mall with his cousins. I am so excited about meeting his cousins” she said.
Then I replied to her,
“Okay.”
After that, I didn’t check my phone again. I tried to focus for the final round.
I won the final round. I got the gold but I got injured. I twisted my left ankle. Badly hurt. After the competition, I didn’t go back home to Singapore. I decided to stay in California for a short vacation. After my last text to Hannah, I didn’t receive any reply at all from her. For how many days? She didn’t text me. It’s our summer vacation, so it’s okay not to go home immediately. My teammates went home after the competition.
