Chapter 45

~Dominic~ If you had told me that I’d be in my office with my mate in front of me, I’d say you were dreaming, but it sounds like a good one. She’s everything I could have ever wanted in a mate, and she’s standing in front of me. I couldn’t be luckier if I tried. Okay, so it’s a bit awkward. I don’t think she meant to come in here, but I’m not mad that she did. I’ll consider myself a winner if I can find a way to keep her here. Just talk to her. Not now, Gideon. I don’t have the energy to deal with you, too. He huffs, but stays present. His mate is here, and I’m sure I couldn’t force him away if I tried. “What brings you here?” My voice is rougher than I wanted it to be, but I can’t change that now. “Nothing.” I raise an eyebrow, which smooths out the moment I notice her flustered state. She definitely didn’t intend to say what she did. Interesting. “Meaning?” Jamorea ducks her head, staring at her hands that are sitting in her lap. “I… nothing.” I shift in the chair, leaning forward. I don’t plan to let her off the hook that easily. “You meant something. Why not just tell me what that is?” Jamorea’s head comes up, and she opens her mouth as if she plans to speak. She quickly closes it without making a sound. I see we will be taking the difficult path today. I can work with that. I spoke to mate. Did she provide anything useful? She said that she made her come in here. Mona took over and brought her to us. Ah, so Mona, her wolf, is the more agreeable one. She’s the one more willing to fall into the mate bond. I can use that. I clear my throat, watching her jump at the sound. “It seems to me that it was Mona who brought you in here.” I let my words settle over her. I watch her body flinch as I talk. She didn’t expect me to know that, but it makes me very glad that I do. “Did she happen to tell you why she wanted to be in here. I mean, I don’t want to assume it’s simply because of the mate bond. I would hate to think so highly of myself.” I fight the smile that’s threatening to grow on my face. Jamorea’s eyes get big, and her mouth purses. “Regardless of what you are trying to do, you sound extremely full of yourself right now.” I can’t fight it anymore and let the smile bloom on my face. Yeah, I’m actually feeling myself right now. “What can I say? I’m just happy that I have such an effect on my mate and she wanted to bask in my presence.” Jamorea clicks her tongue and rolls her eyes. I let out a soft chuckle. I can’t lie, I like messing with her. In our lives together, I think that will be one of my favorite activities. I rest my elbows on my desk and let my head lean on my joined hands. My eyes stay on Jamorea. I catalog every inch of her face, every facial movement, every sound she makes. I notice when she starts to fidget and look everywhere but at me. “Is there something on my face? You’re just staring at me.” I let my hands drop and grin at her. “I’m just noticing how absolutely gorgeous my mate is.” Jamorea chuckles. “You sure are laying it on really thick. Does that line usually work with women?” I shrug my shoulders as I lean back in my chair. “I can’t say that I have any idea. I’m not one to spend much time trying to get the ladies.” Jamorea raises an eyebrow and crosses her arms. “I find that hard to believe.” I don’t respond. I let the silence take over as I sit and look at her. There are a lot of things I want to do with and to my mate. I know that we have a serious issue right now, and I need to hold off and be patient. It’s hard to do because my fated mate is someone I’ve wished for for a while now. I know that patience is key, but I’m not sure how much patience I really have. “Go out with me.” Jamorea’s eyes get big, and she starts to look around the room. I don’t rush her for a response, but I don’t plan to let her get away without giving me one. “I… I really don’t think now is the time for us to go out.” “Why is that?” Jamorea sighs and shakes her head. “My situation is sh.it, you know that. I have eyes on me, and I have a brother to think about. I can’t risk anything happening to him.” She may not think so, but I haven’t forgotten about the situation or her brother. I know that we need to get him out. Once the other packs get here, we will be able to come up with a solid plan. I vow to reunite Jamorea with her little brother, no matter what it takes. “Life is short, Jamorea. I know how important your brother is to you and I promise that I’m working on a plan that will bring him back to you unharmed. I don’t know what’s going to happen down the line, but I want us to get to know each other while we are here with each other. You can decide you don’t want me, but please give me the courtesy of getting to know me first.” I shift in my seat, keeping my eyes on her. “I know we’ve told each other some hard truths about our pasts, but I want something lighter for us. I want us to have fun with each other while things are still quiet.” Jamorea doesn’t answer me, but she does hold my gaze. We stare at each other, and the silence presses down hard. I don’t know what her answer will be. I can only hope that she wants to spend time with me as much as I want to spend time with her. I finally can’t take the silence anymore and decide to be the one to break it. “So what do you say, Jamorea? Will you go out with me?”
