Chapter 18

741 Words
As everyone speculated about Vincent's identity, Galahad had already walked to the center of the banquet hall. Upon seeing Galahad, Emma's expression changed. She remembered clearly that this man was a friend of Vincent's. With that realization, Emma couldn't help but glance at Vincent, but he remained calm. "Allow me to introduce myself. I am General Galahad. You might recognize me from TV or newspapers. Presently, I serve as the security personnel for the enigmatic individual," Galahad declared, casting a commanding glance across the audience. "Wow, a five-star general working security for him?" "Have you heard of that mysterious multinational company, International Peace Corporation? Their influence is formidable!" "Yeah, since that big shot is here, why isn't he making an appearance?" Whispers filled the room as Galahad's words stirred curiosity. Surveying the crowd, Galahad continued, "Actually, he's been here all along. He just doesn't fancy these gatherings and prefers to keep a low profile." The revelation caused a stir among the guests, who began scanning the room for the elusive figure. Many eyes turned to Vincent once again. Meanwhile, Vincent sat quietly in a corner, sipping his drink. "Could he truly be responsible for dismantling the Joseph, Barton, and Marion families altogether?" Emma wondered, her gaze fixed on Vincent. As speculation buzzed, Galahad spoke up again, "No need to search further. He sees everything you do. I'll be overseeing today's event. Feel free to approach me with any questions." Upon hearing this, the guests swarmed around Galahad, offering gifts ranging from South African diamonds to Lamborghinis, even a mountain lion, all originally intended for Stanley Field. Now, they hoped to curry favor with the mysterious figure behind Galahad. Everyone presented lavish gifts, hoping to win the favor of both the five-star general and the elusive VIP. Galahad found it amusing. He knew Vincent well enough to know that he had no interest in such things. "Thank you all for your gifts, but unfortunately, the big man isn't interested in them," Galahad announced to the crowd. Disappointed murmurs spread, acknowledging that someone who commanded a five-star general's loyalty wouldn't be impressed by their offerings. "However, he wants me to express his gratitude. He'll donate all these gifts to the Children's Fund to help those in need. Thank you for your generosity." The audience burst into applause, touched by the benevolent act of the enigmatic figure. At that moment, Vincent turned to Emma and said, "Emma, do you have a gift for that mysterious person?" Emma looked puzzled. "Vincent, what are you talking about? I didn't prepare any gift!" "Isn't this the gift you prepared?" Vincent produced a bottle of bourbon and handed it to Emma. "This is the gift for him?" Emma stared at the bourbon in her hand, her expression full of confusion. "Vincent, don't be ridiculous. How could you give such cheap whiskey to that VIP?" Una couldn't help but rebuke. "Yeah, Vincent, are you trying to embarrass Emma?" Franklin looked worried. Ignoring them, Vincent continued to address Emma. "Trust me, she'll like it. Listen to me and take it over." Emma took a deep breath and approached with the bottle of bourbon in her hand. As Vincent watched her walk away, memories flooded back. It was five years ago when he got injured during a mission and ended up stranded in M City. Emma found him then. He was badly wounded and suffering from severe hypothermia. Out of rush, Emma fetched a bottle of whiskey. It was Franklin's stash. Vincent could never forget the intense taste of that bourbon that night. After Emma gave him some to drink, he managed to hold on until the ambulance arrived. "I have a gift for the esteemed gentleman!" Emma's voice brought Vincent back to the present. All eyes turned to Emma as she held out the bourbon. "What? Her gift is a bottle of cheap bourbon?" "Is she daring or just clueless?" "Is she trying to be clever by giving such a cheap gift?" In an instant, everyone looked at Emma with skepticism. Giving a bottle of cheap whiskey as a gift at such a grand occasion seemed like a joke. Meanwhile, Emma kept her head down, looking nervous. She felt terrified and wouldn't dare to approach if it weren't for Vincent's encouragement. Una and Franklin felt a wave of despair. Una couldn't help but shoot a glare at Vincent. Galahad frowned as he looked at the bourbon in Emma's hand. "Bourbon?"
