Inside the operating room, two surgeons worked tirelessly, assisted by a nurse. Removing a bullet lodged inside the shoulder was supposed to be an easy task but in Nathan’s case the bullet had lodged itself inside his shoulder girdle. Extracting a bullet from a bone was a time consuming process and if it wasn’t done correctly, it could damage his entire shoulder. What complicated matters even further was that there was a cluster of nerve fibers in the region. One mistake could paralyze Nathan’s right side completely. Margaret stood silently and observed the doctors make incisions into Nathan’s skin. Gradually the surgeons drilled a small hole in Nathan’s shoulder blade and started extracting the bullet. The pain would have been excruciating if he hadn’t been under the effect of anesthesia
