Chapter 16

Sally was awakened by strange noises coming from the toilet. She opened her eyes and noticed that Bunny was not sleeping next to her. She immediately got off the bed and went to check who it was. The sounds were foul, like someone was throwing up. She moved faster and when she got to the toilet in the bathroom, she saw Bunny throwing up. "Bunny!" She went to his side and rubbed his soft back. Bunny was alone in his blue pants that he liked to wear. His ears were hanging down and he was throwing up. Sally felt in her stomach that it was bad and saw a glimpse of blood. Bunny was vomiting blood. That was strange because drinking too much alcohol could cause that, but Bunny didn't drink strong drinks at all. Was he ... sick? When he finished, he put his head away from the toilet and looked weakly at Sally, his ears still drooping down. Bunny was also breathing a little weakly, so Sally became more concerned. She quickly touched his forehead with her hand and felt he had a high temperature. She was in shock. "I'll call the hospital right away." But then a cute little black rabbit appeared along with his older brother, who was also adorable. They were the children of Sally and Bunny, Midnight and Snowball. They held each other's little paws and Midnight yawned. Snowball was 5 years old, while Midnight was still 4. "Mommy, what's wrong with Daddy?" asked Snowball in his little voice. He looked at them scared and worried, while Midnight didn't know what was going on. Sally smiled gently and went over to them quickly while Bunny remained on the floor, his head resting on the lid of the toilet which he closed. "Just go to bed, okay, babies? Mommy will call Aunt Lara to take care of you. All right?" Snowball nodded and Sally kissed her children's foreheads before watching them leave for the bedroom they shared. Sally then heard water running in the shower and she immediately looked behind her. Bunny was in the shower, under cold water while he still had his pants on. Sally's eyes went wide when she saw that. "Bunny!" She immediately went to him and gently helped him out of the shower. She didn't care if she was wet. She gently grabbed his soft cheeks and looked straight into his blue eyes. "Listen to me carefully. I'll call the hospital and Lara. Is that okay?" Bunny only nodded gently as he almost fell over. She helped him sit on the toilet lid and immediately walked over to her cell phone, which was on the nightstand. It was night and it was also raining outside. 'I'm terribly sorry, Lara,' Sally thought in her head before calling the hospital first. She tapped in the correct number and waited. She did hear a beep and beep before someone finally picked up the phone. Sally immediately told her husband's situation and the operator said they would send an ambulance to their home. Sally gave the address. Sally thanked and the operator wished her and the family well before hanging up the phone. Sally then called Lara and when she picked up, Sally began to panic. She explained the situation and begged her to come over. Lara said she would come soon. Sally grabbed her phone and immediately went to her husband, who was still sitting on the toilet. His head was down and his ears still hanging down as well. Bunny looked terrible and weak. Then he began to cry and breathe harder. Sally didn't know what to do because she panicked too much. But then she remembered from Rose that panicking doesn't help, that it only makes the situation worse. Sally took a quick deep breath. She quickly grabbed a bucket and handed it to Bunny, who started vomiting again. It was already blood. Sally grabbed a towel, wet it with cold water and put it around his neck. What only she could still do was comfort Bunny and that was what she did. * Time passed quickly and Sally heard the doorbell ring. Sally left Bunny alone for a moment as she went to the door. She opened the door and there stood a soaking-wet Lara wearing oversized clothes. There were her pajamas underneath because she had to hurry. Sally let Lara in right away and looked at her very sadly. "Oh, Lara, it's just awful. Bunny is vomiting blood and I called the ambulance." Lara was in shock when she heard that Bunny was vomiting blood. She gently put both hands on Sally's shoulders. "Don't worry, Sally. I'll take care of the kids. I called Max, too. He'll come over with Josh." Sally nodded and then Sally heard a car pull up. She immediately looked outside and there was the ambulance. She sighed with relief. A female human and a furry cat immediately walked up to them. The cat took the word and it was a male. "Where is your husband, ma'am?" "In the bathroom, above the first door on the right," Sally replied immediately. The cat went to the bathroom while the woman stayed with Sally. The woman gave Sally a quick smile. "The hospital will take care of him." Then she quickly went after the cat. Not 5 minutes later, they came down and helped Bunny down. Sally helped Bunny put on a coat and after he got one, Sally immediately put on a coat and shoes as well. She gave Lara a quick hug. “Thanks, Lara. Tell Max I'm in the hospital.” "I will." Sally didn't care that she was in her pajamas. She was wearing a coat and shoes. She was wearing long pajama pants. She rode with the ambulance to the hospital and held Bunny's paw in her hand the entire ride. * Sally was waiting in the waiting room, hoping to finally find out what was going on. She sat on the chair, looking down sadly. She was lost in thought when a familiar figure sat down next to her. Sally looked up and saw it was Max. He smiled sadly at her. “I got here quickly when I got a call from Lara. Is Bunny okay?” Sally sighed. “We won't know until the doctor comes. Let's hope he's okay." After Max wanted to say something about his best friend, the doctor appeared. They immediately got up and went to him. The doctor was a man. He looked like he had some bad news and was holding a clipboard. Oh no… What could the news be? The doctor gave them a sad smile. “Follow me to my office.” Sally and Max looked at each other nervously, knowing it would be something bad. Fortunately, no news was published that Bunny was taken to the hospital in a serious condition. Sally wanted to keep that private so no fans could disturb Bunny's peace. Max wanted the same for his best friend. They followed the doctor to his office. It wasn't far from Bunny's room where he was now sleeping. They both sat down and watched the doctor sit in front of them with his hands on the table. He sighed, as if he didn't want to tell. But he had to, it's part of being a doctor. He looked them straight in the eye and finally said what was wrong with the rabbit. "I'm terribly sorry, but Bunny was diagnosed with Asesino De Conejos." "Excuse me?" said Max, who didn't understand. Sally asked the doctor what that diagnosis was. The doctor then explained more. Translated from Spanish to 'Rabbit Killer', it is a dangerous rabbit disease that rabbits can come in contact with and become very seriously ill. The symptoms are blood vomiting, high body temperature, and dizziness. Unfortunately, there is no cure for it as the scientists are still investigating. “Bunny has DNA not only from a human but also from a rabbit,” the doctor explained with a sad look on his face. "I'm sorry." Sally and Max were both in shock. Max asked more questions while Sally was gone in her thoughts. Her expression darkened and she felt her tears coming. What the doctor was trying to say was that Bunny was dying.
