Back at work, Gena felt a renewed sense of confidence. After yesterday’s travel and a relaxing day at the salon and spa with Cherry, she felt more prepared for whatever challenges lay ahead. She chose a simple black dress that accentuated her beauty as she entered the building, greeting employees with her usual warm smile. This approach made everyone feel comfortable and motivated, knowing that while she was kind-hearted, she also expected productivity.
Using the president’s elevator, Gena felt inspired by the respect and happiness of her employees, viewing them as family to care for and manage. She was scanning the files on her desk when a knock interrupted her.
"Come in!"
"Good morning, ma'am! Someone named Ado introduced himself as Mr. Jared Jacobo’s personal assistant. He says his boss is coming here," Cherry informed her.
Anxiety surged through Gena. "The son is coming, isn’t that great? Will he take over or let you work alone?" Cherry asked, curiosity in her voice.
"You won’t get anything from me. I’m clueless," Gena replied, laughing softly at Cherry’s disappointed expression. She signaled Cherry to leave and tried to focus on the files again, but her mind raced. What would Jared do? Would he kick her out? She decided to face whatever came, knowing she had enough savings to fall back on.
"Uhmm! They’re here!" Cherry’s panicked voice brought her back to reality.
Gena forced a smile. "Let them in," she said, trying to stay composed.
"Compose yourself, lady boss. This Jared Jacobo is a very hot guy," Cherry teased, making Gena smile, knowing the truth all too well.
"The not-so-good thing is, he’s with a woman. But don’t worry, I’ve never seen a woman who can outshine your beauty," Cherry added.
The thought calmed Gena, though bitterness lingered. This was going to be a battle. Jared was here to show his disdain, but she wouldn’t back down. He might not like her, but he shouldn’t insult her by flaunting another woman.
"Good morning, sir!" Cherry’s lively voice greeted the visitors. Gena stood up and walked from her desk to meet them, smiling sweetly at the woman and the assistant. She gave Jared a brief smile, avoiding his eyes. He seemed shocked, not expecting to have met his wife two or three times before. Gena acted as if nothing was amiss.
"Nice to meet you, sir!" she said humbly, shaking hands with the assistant. The woman glared at her, not even trying to hide her dislike. But when Gena offered her hand to Jared, he pulled her into a hug.
"I didn’t expect my cunning wife to be this beautiful!" he whispered, kissing her cheek.
Gena was shocked by his actions, sensing a hidden meaning in his words. She smiled awkwardly.
"We visited today because Mr. Jacobo wants to meet his employees," the assistant announced.
Gena understood Jared’s intention. He wanted to assert himself as the real boss. It didn’t bother her; she always saw herself as an employee, treating others as equals. She would disappoint him in his efforts to undermine her.
"Then it’s my pleasure to show you around, sir!" Gena said humbly, leading the way. She introduced Jared to all the employees, proud to showcase their happiness and productivity. But Jared seemed uninterested, his mind elsewhere. The woman beside him was visibly annoyed by his indifference.
Gena felt a strange satisfaction seeing the woman’s frustration. It wasn’t jealousy; it was anger at Jared for bringing another woman here. If people knew they were married, they’d pity her as the unwanted wife. That was the truth, she admitted to herself.
"I’m done here. Be home by 6 pm. We’ll have dinner together," Jared said, sounding bored and irritated.
"Okay, see you then," Gena replied, smiling at the woman to tease her. She felt satisfied making her look foolish. The woman couldn’t compete with her beauty.
"Goodbye, wife. Don’t be late," Jared whispered, kissing her near the lips. Gena blushed, aware that everyone was watching. He was putting her in an awkward position. She quickly hid her discomfort and acted nonchalant.
"Cherry, please show them the way," Gena said, needing a moment to relax. She closed the door and sat down. Gena allowed herself a moment of self-congratulation. "You did great!" she whispered, feeling relieved that their first encounter had passed without incident. The exhaustion from the day's tension weighed heavily on her. She dreaded the thought of their next meeting over dinner that night.
Her thoughts were interrupted by the door suddenly swinging open, and in bounced Cherry, her energy as vibrant as ever.
"You've got some story to tell, lady boss!" Cherry exclaimed.
"What?" Gena replied, feigning confusion.
"Don't play innocent, master. This humble servant of yours can see there’s something between you and Mr. Jacobo."
"And what could that be? This is the first time we’ve seen each other," Gena explained.
"Is that so? But his actions suggest otherwise," Cherry insisted.
"That’s just your imagination. Back to work, woman!" Gena commanded.
"Could it be that he was enchanted by my master’s beauty?" Cherry gasped, covering her mouth theatrically. Gena couldn’t help but laugh.
"You're thinking nonsense. Go back to your work, or I'll deduct your salary," Gena threatened playfully.
"I’ll be leaving for now, master, but mark my words—I can never be wrong about this." With that, Cherry left, leaving Gena to her thoughts.
Cherry was astutely observant about how men behaved around her. But Gena couldn’t believe that Jared’s actions were anything but hostile. He had some plan, likely involving her removal from the company.
