Steele had all his men back at the camp and away from the pack borders, “What the hell man?” Flynn asked when Steele joined him back at the camp. He couldn’t understand why he didn’t just call the warriors to come in and attack, instead they were running away like cowards. “Where’s Drew?” he spat through gritted teeth, pissed that he didn’t get to exact his revenge. Drew came running out of the group wide eyed that the girl was in pain yet again. “What is going on?” Steele bellows. He has barely known his mate, and most of the time she was in pain or unconscious from the pain. This wasn’t anything to do with him, nor did he feel anything from her, marked or not, since they have met, he would feel her pain and would understand part of what was happening to her, even if he didn’t fully understand it. Drew nervously scanned the girl in his Alpha’s arms, but he hadn’t a clue what to tell him. But he never got the chance to say anything as Ava let out a cry that had every wolf covering their ears to block out the sound. Steele closed his eyes in pain but kept a hold of Ava. Her hands grip his bicep, Steele watched as her face is showing nothing but pain, then he himself is growling in pain. He looks down to his arm and finds Ava’s nails morphing into claws and Drew gasps, “That’s impossible. You need to get away now” Drew says. Steele remained where he was, Flynn had to pull him away with much reluctance by his Alpha. He didn’t like being forced away from his mate He watched being held back by Flynn and other warriors as Ava rolled around in pain, her nails getting longer and when she opened her mouth to scream a howl broke through. Her teeth elongating. “What is happening to her?” Steele demands to know. “She’s, she’s…” Drew couldn’t say it. He couldn’t because he didn’t believe it himself. Ava suddenly stops moving and everyone around watching held their breath. Steele was about to move to her when her eyes suddenly open and he inhales quickly. The Rogue Alpha looked at his mate in shock and awe, her glowing purple eyes darting around. “That is impossible” he says in a whisper, his eyes never turning away from Ava Steele moved towards Ava, but she jumps back in fear. A snarl rip through her throat; fangs on full display for everyone to see. Steele lowered his head in submission like everyone else in camp. That truly confirmed what was in front of him. Only one creature, aside from the high council could make an Alpha bow in submission. “Ava” Steele speaks with a soft tone, his voice even shocked his Beta. Steele was never one to use a soft voice. The heavy breathing of the girl in front of him calms down slightly. Steele crouches down so he was in front of Ava and not towering above her. He didn’t want her fearing him, she could lash out and seriously injure someone. She growls as a warning, but Steele doesn’t back down, it was the only way he knew to get her to focus on the situation. Reaching forward he places a hand on her thigh. She was about to snap at him, but the tingling sensation enveloped her, and she was back in control of whatever she was doing, her eyes no longer purple and her teeth and claws retract. Ava continues to breathe heavily but tears comes to her eyes, she had no idea what was happening. When she locks eyes with Steele, she instantly feels calm and leaps into his hold. He may be angry, and they weren’t close yet, but he was the only one she could trust, and he was her mate. The Alpha wraps his arms around her in a protective vice. She shook with fear, just like him, she had no idea what to do. Ava’s breathing regulates and she places her face in his neck, his scent kept her calm. He never got to question her as what was going on as she passed out. Steele sighs, there was no time to react as Leo jumped forward. “We need to leave, the council are gathering their troops, and we don’t have enough warriors here to fight them now we no longer have the upper hand” Leo tells his Alpha. Flynn got the warriors together and everyone made their way back towards their pack land, Steele in front of everyone with Ava in his arms. The Lycan Shadow Pack was a week’s march from their pack land, after a two-day walk, they took a break. With the fire crackling in the night Steele stared into the flames, Ava was yet again unconscious in his presence, the walk home so far Steele refused to hand his mate to another male to carry. He didn’t care though; she barely weighed a thing. And no one was going to touch what was his. His mind was full of questions, how was she a Lycan, only his pack had the Lycan gene so why she did have it. When Ava began to stir, he glanced her way, she rubbed her eyes and sat up the blanket Steele had placed on her falling to her waist, “What happened?” she asks with a hoarse voice. She had been crying. Steele remains silent, he didn’t know what to say and a part of him was angry at her because she was the reason his revenge was still on going. Flynn however was more talkative, “You’re a Lycan Ava” was his first words to her. She looked at Flynn when he spoke then glanced at Steele. The other wolves around the fire went silent in their conversations. They wanted to hear what she had to say. They had all seen it with their own eyes, but disbelief was still in the air. Lycan’s died a hundred year ago, so how was their future Luna one. She sighs, “I only found out when I woke up in the tent and you had left to start a war, before that I had no clue” she says in a whisper but being wolves, everyone heard. She looks down to her lap and plays with her fingers as a distraction. It was difficult already talking about things, especially to people who she barely knew. Since no one else was speaking she figured now was a time to explain more, “You obviously know the story of your ancestors, but there was one thing you didn’t know”. Warriors looked at her with confusion, how did she know something about their history that they didn’t? Taking another deep breath, she continues. “When the high council attacked your pack, Beta Greyson Blue’s daughter Alana was shifting for the first time under a blood moon, the council attacked her along with everyone else unknowing that a Lycan was at its ultimate strongest during their first change, Alana escaped and the Moon Goddess helped to keep her safe from the council”. “Bullshit” Steele growls out getting to his feet, he walks closer to the fire. His hands balled into fists, refusing to listen to her speak. That was all wrong, every Lycan was slaughtered that night. “I’m telling the truth, many of the wolves tried to protect the Lycans and they lost their lives because of it, Alana’s first mate was killed in the fight, so the Moon Goddess gave her a second chance mate, my father” she says in a rush, she didn’t want him to interrupt again. Steele spins on his heels and walks up to his mate, his eyes black with murderous anger, “Lies” he spits. Ava fearfully shakes her head, “If I could show you what happened to me to know this I would”. “My father thought she was human, she never carried a scent to others, but my father could sense her miles away, I shifted when I was eight, I had no scent, so no one knew I ever shifted, many still don’t know I have. My mother gave birth to me and died holding me in her arms, the last thing my father saw of my mother was her eyes, they glowed purple”. The anger in Steele’s eyes fade and he looks at his new mate, only people in the pack knew that of the Lycan’s eye colour change. Their eye’s turn purple on their first shift and with their final breath, any other time they change they are silver. “I haven’t lied to you yet, have I?” Ava says trying to get him to believe her. The new Lycan’s eyes begin to water as she finally processes everything that happened over the past two weeks and the beginning of her life, it was all too much. Sniffling she wipes the tears from her cheeks as they spill, “I never asked for any of this” the rejection, a second mate, the Lycan gene, a second mate who clearly hates her right now, none of it, and yet she blamed herself for it all. Steele opened his mouth to say something but rustling in the bushes nearby had every wolf’s attention. They all get to their feet preparing themselves for the council soldiers that no doubt was close behind them. Flynn and Steele stalked towards the potential intruder just as Ava caught what little scent they carried, she jumped up wide eyed. “No don’t” she shouts as she leaps in front of the wolves ready to attack. Steele growled annoyed she was yet again interrupting him. “Nathan” she breathes out as soft as she could, she didn’t want to scare him more than he already was. A second later and the thirteen-year-old emerged with three-year-old Rose in his arms. His face covered in tears. Ava steps forward and embraces the children in her arms, then she pulls back and inspects them both for any injuries. “Dad told me to take Rose and run, the council had their warriors grab anyone who knew and was close to you, we got out before they got us” he sobs out. Ava consoles the boy. “What about Jake?” she asks. Nathan shakes his head “He helped us get out, but they caught him, they have Kyle and mom too, your dad has also been taken, anyone that is close to you, that might have information about you are being held”. Ava breathes deep so she didn’t cry in front of them. The looks on the children were of tiredness, Nathan had ran for two days following behind the pack all while carrying his little sister. Ava reaches for the toddler taking the weight of the brother. “Come on, let’s get you warm and fed”. Nathan looked behind Ava to see the rogue Alpha and Beta giving him a hard stare. He recoils slightly and Ava reaches out for him, “Don’t mind them, they won’t hurt you, he’s just pissed cause I’m the reason this is happening in the first place” Ava mutters out. Holding his hand, Nathan is practically glued to her side as Ava takes them to the fire to warm up. Wrapping them up in the blanket she was previously in she gets them some food which they devour in seconds, so she gets them a second helping for them. The camp was eerily silent, everyone’s eyes on the two new people there. They didn’t like outsiders, especially from other packs. Ava lulled Rose to sleep, Nathan was too scared and traumatised to close his eyes. “Nathan, are you okay?” Ava asks. He looks at her and tries to smile, but the ushered tears in his eyes told a different story “What if they hurt them?” he feared for his family. Ava sighed, this was all her fault, the council had arrested them because they knew her, even though no one knew who she truly was not even herself they were all going to be tortured for that information. “I won’t let that happen” Ava says getting to her feet, she places a sleeping Rose on a blanket. “Where are you going?” Nathan asks. She smiles, “They aren’t getting hurt because of me, I’m going to hand myself over and they get released, you get your family back” she speaks with determination. Only Steele wasn’t happy with that idea. A growl rips through the camp, Ava’s head snaps towards her mate who was stalking her way. “You will not be leaving this camp, and you certainly won’t hand yourself over to get slaughtered. You are all that remains of the Lycan bloodline” he spits out. He was already pissed and now his mate wanted to sacrifice herself, he wasn’t having that. “I can’t leave them to get hurt because of me” she cries out. “I don’t care, you are my mate and you will come home to my pack where we will plan another attack” the pointed look in his eyes had Ava looking down in defeat, she may have had him bowing earlier when she shifted but she had no idea how to change or how her Lycan side worked. “We should get going, if two kids managed to find us, the council soldiers will be hot on our trail” Leo spoke out of nowhere. He seemed to be popping out of nowhere a lot. Steele nodded “Everybody shift, we run in wolf form, it will be a shorter trip”. All the warriors began to shift, including Flynn, Steele however continued to look at Ava. “Nathan, when I shift you need to climb onto me with Rose” she helps the young boy ready the sleeping girl in a blanket, so she didn’t get cold on the run. Ava didn’t remove her clothes instead she shifted with them on, the clothes ripping as she accessed Aniya her wolf, she felt excited to finally be out after so long. ‘Yes, I finally get to be free’ Aniya yelps out. ‘Ease up, you can’t get too excited, we have to carry the kids’ Ava tells her wolf, she understood and calmed down a little, but not by much. Turning around in her black wolf Ava looked at her mate, who was staring at her with a look she couldn’t decipher. All Lycan’s had large black wolves, often bigger than Alpha’s and Ava’s completely black wolf was bigger than everyone’s. A small huff from her wolf and Steele began to strip down, Ava looks away, if she were in human form, her cheeks would be scarlet with embarrassment. Looking at Nathan she lays on the ground so he could get on “Ava, your wolf is black and huge, how is that possible?” he asks, she was in wolf form and couldn’t answer back. Standing back on her paws she faces Steele who had now fully shifted into a beautiful dark brown almost black wolf with silver and grey tips of fur that matched his human eyes. Ava shivered at the sight of her mate’s wolf; Aniya however was getting excited at seeing her mate. With a single head gesture, Ava ran alongside the Alpha into the dark woods, she was heading to the one place she heard of in stories that would scare her into next week as a child. And now with two children on her back, Ava was heading into unknown territory with a mate who she didn’t know anything about and seemed to only have one emotion: anger.
