Chapter 1:
Lyra;
What was this? The door was opened slightly and I can see the bedside of the room. I crumpled the paper in my hands slightly when I heard Vanessa’s voice. What was she doing in my room? With my husband?
I had the urge to push the door open and welcome them with the good news that I couldn’t wait to tell them any longer, but the curious part of me wondered what they wanted to say or do, in our matrimonial bed to be precise.
“Will, I love you so much,” I was sure she was pouting as she said that. I pulled my eyes closer to the part of the door that can see Vanessa, and my guesses were right, she was caressing his chest as she spoke and my heart skipped a beat.
Love? When was all this happening that I blindly knew nothing about? I could hear his moans and a gentle chuckle escape his lips.
My heart sank, I could comprehend everything and I was feeling immediate dizziness, just when I thought Will would be so glad to hear the good news, all along, he was her, cheating on me with my best friend.
“Vanessa,” I scoffed gently and whispered her name to myself. She was always playing the victim, coveting everything that belongs to me and I would blindly give her just so she could be happy and never regret being my friend.
How high was my level of foolishness?
My hand shook against the door knob, I wanted to drag it open and see the shock on their miserable faces but I froze the moment I heard my name.
“I just wish that I could kill Lyra with my bare hands; I bet that would make our plan faster,” Vanessa’s voice rang in my ears like an unending bell.
Before I could even get a chance to think on what Vanessa meant, Will’s voice spoke next, “Then I would be able to get you those expensive makeup kits and the dresses that you want, plus, you would be the envy of your office department.”
Vanessa squealed like her life depended on it. I kept all my emotions in, wanting to gather enough information they had to say about me before I would use it against them.
“How much was that cancer death insurance again?” Vanessa asked, determination evident in her voice.
“Depending on the years she used to get treatment, with Lyra’s case, she has been fighting cancer for months now so we would probably get around a half a million dollars from the government.”
My whole world, my marriage, friendship and endless working was finally crumbling before me.
A year after I married Will, I discovered that I had traces of cancer since I stressed myself too much. I never knew that these two ingrates were impatiently waiting for my death to claim the money of the disease that Will got me into.
I would work overtime in the office and would still come home to cook dinner for my lazy, jobless husband, Will. He would constantly complain of how lean and ugly I was beginning to look like and advised me to take a test.
After much persuasion and thinking and collapsing in the office a few times, I took a blood test which got me informed that I had traces of cancer and still had the chance to take care of it if I had enough money for surgery, unfortunately, every money I earned went to Will who would spend them all on clothes, games subscription, shoes and other things that I didn’t know about. Who knows? He might be giving part of my hard earned money to Vanessa.
“I might just have to poison her drink tomorrow so she would just f*****g die, she is much stronger than I thought!”
I couldn’t take this any longer, I have gotten all the information I needed to file a report to the police for fraud and deceit and divorce. I crumpled the paper in my hands even more and looked at the both of them with irritation, pushing the door loudly.
“There wouldn’t be a need for that, because I will be informing the police about your little scheme to defraud the government.”
I glared at the both of them; their sight alone was disgusting to me. Vanessa wore lingerie, exposing the flawless thighs that she had. Shock was written all over her face, but she never looked remorseful for her actions.
Will, on the other hand, just lay on the bed as though I wasn’t some kind of important person.
“You’re dying! Do you expect me to be with a dying, ugly woman? Hell no! You’re given how many months? Six? A year, max.”
He was trying to act like the victim here; I couldn’t control the tears that rumbled against my face. My heart was heavy, I was in pain.
I hit my leg against the ground and yelled at the top of my voice, “I had cancer because of you, you made me work endlessly, not caring if I wanted to or not.”
My yelling made Vanessa shudder so she immediately hugged Will in fear. I wouldn’t just stand there like a fool; I moved towards the bedside and grabbed the nearest pillow that I could find, throwing it with all my strength at Vanessa.
It hit her head and she yelped in pain, I was done being the foolish one and always used to do things that were against my will.
“How dare you hit her head? Do you want to die?"Without even waiting for my response, he stood up from the bed, walked towards me while I walked backwards. He was glaring, his eyes turned all red and he pushed me, making my bum hit the floor harshly.
It was painful, I wouldn’t lie, but I tried hiding it so I wouldn’t look so vulnerable. I sniffed in pain, trying to stand when I heard his voice again and my heart skipped.
“What’s this?” his eyes flashed at the paper that fell from my hand as I was being pushed. I couldn’t even stand up to grab it due to the pains. Both he and Vanessa’s attention shifted to this unknown paper that I held earlier and he picked it hurriedly.
He wasn’t uttering a single word to anyone until Vanessa asked, “What’s in there, babe?” she fluttered her eyelashes at him pitifully and I could see that curiosity was killing her.
“You’re in remission?” his anger grew to its peak and I shuddered in fear, he gave me this deathly glare that even I couldn’t dare to stare at for too long.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” he flung the paper to God-knows-where and shifted his gaze towards me.
Vanessa seemed perplexed, “What of our planned cancer death insurance to get from this b***h?”
It seemed like she unmasked the sweet attitude she had earlier and sounded devilish.
Will smirked weirdly, “You’re right! We will just have to kill her right here and get our insurance after all.”
“That could work?” Vanessa’s eyes beamed with happiness and all I could do was try to crawl away from the killers. My head was spinning, but I had to be safe first
I was sure that they could kill me, there was nothing Will wouldn’t do for money.
“The i***t is trying to run away. There is nowhere you’re going to except hell!” Then he immediately grabbed my neck, squeezing it like his life depended on it.
He laughed maniacally as he did so. I tried my best to push him away, but he was just too strong for me. I patted his broad shoulder, but it had no effect. I even tried hitting him but the more I did, the harder he squeezed my neck.
I was getting weak, my knee was shaking and my eyes kept fluttering open and close. I never wanted this to be my end. I wanted to live a better life, never wanting to have anything to do with Will and Vanessa, but that dream wouldn’t come true after all.
I tried breathing and coughing but it was very hard to do so I tried catching my breath, but that didn’t work either.
I closed my eyes gently before finally giving in, I could feel his hands finally freeing itself from my neck but it was already too late, I heaved slowly and the next thing I knew, he pushed my almost lifeless body towards the expensive glass table that I bought and it shattered the moment it came in contact with my head.
I could faintly see blood oozing from my ears and nose and the last thing I heard was Vanessa.
“Is she finally dead?” she sounded like she felt some kind of fear in her.
And that was how my enemies won against me….
