Chapter 2:

Lyra; “Daddy, she’s finally awake,” Was the first voice I heard when I fluttered my lashes open. “Finally, I was starting to fear that I would lose my best friend,” Another voice that I dreaded so much filled my ears. Before I could realize anything, a warm hand jerked my wrists and tapped it continually. Was this the afterlife? I thought I was dead? I immediately scanned the surroundings to see what was happening and I froze the moment I realized where this was. The door creaked open and that was when I saw him, my father. It’s been how many years now? Seven years after he died? I was feeling too guilty to even visit his grave yard that I never visited, even for once. I studied him closely as he walked towards me with a huge grin on his face. The wrinkled and troubled face that was always plastered on his face before I died seemed not to appear anymore, plus, he looked a lot younger than how I remembered. “Sweet pie, you’re awake, you got your old man worried.” He chuckled lightly to his eyes. I could see the warmth that his eyes carried that almost broke my heart. Back to the real question, why was I here? Was I reborn? I chuckled when I realized that it was just a fairytale to be reborn. I already read that in folktales and fairytales, but the surroundings seemed to tell me otherwise. “Which year are we?” I suddenly blurted out, hoping to satisfy my intuition. They all seemed to look at me weirdly until I heard her voice, “2020, why do you ask?” Her voice was like sharp pins sent to pierce into my skin sharply just to cause me pains. “2020?” I muttered slowly to myself, trying to figure out the odds and possibilities that I was reborn. I looked around the room, no wonder father was still alive and young, and Vanessa looked younger and prettier than the last time I imagined. I got married in 2023 to William, so I still had three more years to right my wrongs. Her pale blue eyes scanned me wearily, even though she was silent, she was probably cursing my inwardly. I tried keeping my calm especially when my murderer was right beside me. My urge to strangle her pushed against me but there was nothing I could do. I wouldn’t want to be suspected of mental problems since they don’t know anything that happened to me. “William would soon be here, he had to wrap up a couple things from his office first,” Vanessa’s voice rang around the silent room, hoping to ease the quietness that lingered in the air. My hands became cold and my heart suddenly beat madly against its rib cage at the mention of his name. It was like I was reliving my last moment over and over again. I didn’t think I would be able to stand both of them together in this room with me, even if I could stand Vanessa, I couldn’t stand William, he was the real murderer here. I could hear father’s light chuckle embrace the air, “I’m sure he would be so glad to hear that she is finally awake after two days!” What did I just hear? I was asleep for two days when in reality, I was reborn? Then I heard Maddie’s voice, gosh it has been so long. After not attending father’s funeral, Maddie got angry with me and cut every tie she had with me. I tried reaching out but nobody was willing to help. The only people I had was William and Vanessa who were nothing but snakes stabbing me at the back. “Why don’t we all give Lyra some space? She seems perplexed.” Vanessa said, gritting my name with hatred, something I didn’t realize all the way back, she coveted William and wanted him to be hers. I gave it to her, she played her cards well and it worked out in my last life, but I wasn’t sure about that in this life. She smiled gently at me and looked at father and Maddie simultaneously, ushering them to leave before she faced me, “Get well soon Lyra, so we could go out sometime, just like old days.” And without waiting for me to say anything, she left the room alongside father and Maddie, slamming the door shut. I was just too foolish to realize but Vanessa already coveted everything good thing I had from the start. Then a creepy smile crept up my lips. I couldn’t wait to torment her the same way she did to me, since she coveted my life so badly, I was going to make her go through every hell I went through, and even worse.
