1: From Pan to Fire
ANYA'S POV
The sound of a howling wolf pierced through the wind as I ran through the woods, running for my life.
My feet thumped hard against the ground and numerous twigs snapped under my feet in the process.
My hair was dancing left and right while I swung my arms back and forth, aiding my speed in the woods.
“Help!” I shrieked in fear.
I heard the leaves distant from me; ruffle and just before I looked forward, I tripped on a hard rock and fell to the ground, rolling until I hit my back on another rock.
“Ouch!” I winced in pain as I searched around with my eyes.
My heart was beating really fast in anxiousness as I didn't know what was after me.
Then I heard heavy footsteps approaching me in the dark. I tried to stand, but couldn't and the next thing I felt was an icy hand on my arm.
“Did you think you could run from me?”
“Ahhhh!” I screamed out loud in fear right before I jolted awake.
“Alright! It's time to leave, Anya.” The pack librarian urged me and I looked around with beads of sweat trickling down my chin.
Everyone had left the library and I was the only one left.
I rose to my feet and pushed my chair backwards, then walked out of the library.
The night breeze caressed my skin and it made me feel relieved. That horrible nightmare never ceased haunting me.
Maybe it happened to all wolfless people.
The crescent moon hung in the sky and it felt like it was staring at just me while I walked back to the pack mansion.
I brought out my phone and texted Arthur.
*Let's meet tomorrow at noon.*
I smiled as I dipped my phone back into my pocket. Arthur was literally the only person who made me feel so much joy in my heart.
My second chance mate who had rescued me from a cruel fate I thought was going to be mine. He had accepted me as his mate when I had lost hope after being rejected by my first mate.
Wolfless people who turned 18 without a mate were kicked out of the pack as tradition.
That was the cruelest thing that could happen to anyone as they would become feral; thereby hurting people like monsters and would eventually become rogues.
Witnessing people being kicked out of the pack due to their wolflessness and not finding a mate, made my eighteenth birthday a dread.
But ever since I met Arthur, he had changed my world into a colorful one. My eighteenth birthday which I dreaded once was now a day I impatiently looked forward to every day of my life.
I would get mated to him officially.
“Welcome home, miss.” One of the pack mansion’s guards greeted me.
“Thank you.” I uttered as I stepped into the compound and skipped towards the main entrance.
I walked through the hallway leading to the and the scent of Arthur's cologne hit me. Did he perhaps come here to see me?
With excitement, I walked briskly out of the hallway, and on getting to the living room, the sight my eyes beheld made a shock go through my veins.
My bag fell from my hand as my eyes fed on the most heart breaking sight ever.
Arthur was making out with Maya, my twin sister; and the sound of my bag falling to the ground caught their attention.
My heart broke into two and I felt a sore pain in my chest as I stared at his hand wrapped around Maya's waist.
“Can someone tell me what's going on here?” I questioned, with tears filling my eyes up.
“It's as simple as it looks, dummy!” Maya uttered and sneered at me.
“Arthur, is this a mistake or what! Why the hell are you making out with my twin sister!” I raised my voice in a surge of anger.
“Look. Anya, I know you're shocked right now…”
“Yes, I am. So, explain to me what exactly is going on!” I demanded striking a glare at him.
“Arthur, you're making this boring. Tell her the truth.” Maya uttered as she began to play with Arthur's hair.
“Anya, everything I have told you is a lie. I'm not in love with you. I only lied that I would get mated to you because I wanted to have more opportunities to see and get close to your sister; Maya.”
“What!” I exclaimed softly, feeling my heart shatter into pieces.
My world turned cold and upside down right there. Tears strolled down my eyes effortlessly as I digested all he said to me.
“She is the one I truly love. I mean, she is the best.”
“How could you do this to me, Arthur!” I yelled.
“Hold it right there! What gives you the right to yell at me, uh! Why would any guy want you as their mate? You are wolfless and practically useless. You are really delusional for you to have thought that I liked a loser like you.”
“Baby. Just do the needful. Reject her. Let her know how much of a loser she is.” Maya urged him with a sly smile.
“Relax Maya. Let's take it a little easy on her.” Arthur chuckled.
“Don't tell me you're really going to do that.” I managed to speak while trying to fight back the tears threatening to fall.
“Unfortunately, I am. I Arthur Drake, reject you as my mate.” Those words finally whirled out of his mouth.
The words that broke me once were again spoken by another guy I truly loved.
“Why did you do this to me?” I cried out.
Then Maya chuckled. “If you want to cry so badly, please take your leave.”
“You are evil! How could you snatch my man away from me! You know my situation. You know I have to be accepted by my mate before my 18th birthday, and yet, you stole him from me! Why!” I cried out again.
“Because you do not deserve to be loved. That's why the moon goddess cursed you with such a fate. So, you should live with it and stop trying to escape.” Maya uttered and rolled her eyes.
Then she grabbed Arthur close to her and gave him a kiss. He also reciprocated and they began to make kissing sounds that broke and disgusted me.
I ran out of the living room and dashed towards my parents’ room.
“Where are your manners, Anya! When did you become so mannnerless that you had to dash in without knocking.” My father snapped at me in anger.
“Father, Maya just stole my man from me. She stole Arthur; my mate from me. How am I supposed to live with that!” I cried out as I fell to the ground, feeling too weak to bear the pain.
“Father, Arthur loves me. And I love him too. Just because of her pitiful situation, I can't lose the love of my life.” Maya spoke from behind me.
I didn't expect her to follow after me, but I guess she had come to defend herself.
Both my father and mother sighed and I stared at them, waiting for a response from them.
“Your sister is not in the wrong, Anya. Just because of your wolflessness, you can't expect her not to be with the man she truly loves.” My mother uttered.
“Mother.” I called softly.
I dashed out of their room and headed to the garden, sobbing hard all alone.
Why me! Why did it always have to be me with a downturned smile. What did I do to the moon goddess that she had to curse me with such a cruel fate?
The day I was impatiently waiting to come had become the day I dreaded again. I squeezed my chest, wishing I could cough our the pain that had settled in my heart.
Maybe I was truly born just to suffer a cruel fate; and the faster I admit it, the easier it is for me.
~
After crying out my heart, I went back in, heading to my room. But getting to my room, I smelled the deep stench of blood coming from my sister's room.
At first, I wanted to ignore it, but I just couldn't. It was troubling, so I walked up to her door and knocked.
“Maya?” I called out to her, but there was no response.
So, I pulled down the door knob and pushed the door open; only for me to see her lying in the pool of her blood.
“Maya!” I voiced out and ran towards her lifeless body.
I held her in my arms crying.
“Maya, wake up.”
“Oh, my goodness! What did you do to her!” I heard my mother's shriek.
I turned to her and saw my father dashing in as well.
“I… I did nothing. I… I just saw her lifeless body…”
Before I could complete my words, my mother pushed me away and held on to Maya.
“No! No…. My baby. Maya, wake up please.” She cried out and my father bent to check her pulse.
He shook his head lightly in sadness. Then he turned to me sharply.
“You did this, right?”
“No father. I didn't.”
“Who else could it be! You were jealous that Arthur chose her over you. Was that a reason valid enough to do that!”
“No father. I swear I didn't kill her.”
“Guards!” He called out, and the guards nearby came rushing.
“Take her to the dungeon. A murderer like her deserves a well-thought punishment.”
The guards grabbed me at once with tight grip and began to drag me.
“Father! You can't do this to me! I swear it, I didn't kill her.” I cried out, struggling to escape from the guards’ rough hands.
But neither my father nor mother looked at me as I was being dragged away to the dungeon; an endless darkness.
The guards shut me in the dungeon without giving me a second look.
“You are nothing but a wicked sister. You killed bright Miss Maya.” One of the guards painfully spoke as he turned away.
It hurts me to see everyone accuse me of Maya’s death without investigating it.
I sighed.
“I guess I can only await what punishment my own parents would end up giving me” I said, and sat on the cold floor.
~
Hours turned into days and days turned into a week, but I was still in the dungeon. It only made me more anxious about what punishment they wanted to give me.
Suddenly, two guards approached me and the chains on the bars rattled as they opened it up.
The guards grabbed my arm and dragged me out to the living room.
Finally. It was time for my judgement to be passed.
But then, everyone present at the living room were on their knees. The council elders, maids, guards and even my parents; the Alpha and Luna.
They were all on their knees except for two guards who I didn't recognize to be from our pack.
“The Alpha has arrived.” An announcer voiced out from outside and I looked towards the entrance, waiting to see who was coming and why he was at our pack, having everyone go down on their knees.
The moment he made appearance, I felt a wave of a strong and commanding aura fill the living room.
Goosebumps appeared on my skin and was intimidated by his body build.
He was tall, broad-chested, had dark eyes and dark hair. And the way he walked spoke of how much authority he commanded.
“We know you have caught us unprepared. But I have something else to present to you as a peace offering so we don't have to fight.” My father spoke.
“And what is that, Alpha Dane?”
“My daughter.” He responded and the guards pushed me closer to the Alpha and made me bend down to my knees.
His guards took over and kept me pinned down.
“Father, you can't do this to me. Please.” I pleaded earnestly, but he didn't listen to me.
The Alpha bent to me and sniffed my nape, then straightened up.
“Do you take me for a joke? Of what use is she when she is wolfless?”
“She is of royalty, and our only daughter. We do not have to fight; we do not have to lose our best warriors when I can simply give my daughter to you.”
He didn’t agree at first but after so much pleas, he ended up conceding.
“Alright. Deal.” The Alpha agreed and signaled for his guards to take me away.
“No! No” please don't. Let me go!” I screamed out, struggling with my all to escape from their grip.
They dragged me and pushed me into a car with my hands tied up and the Alpha joined me at the back seat, while the driver also got ready to take off.
“If you know you deem your life precious, I do not want to hear a word from you. I could snap you right into two, so behave.” The Alpha threatened me.
Fear gripped me and my fingers trembled with cold sweats as I stayed quiet while we left the surroundings I had known all my life.
Soon, we got to a different pack and I was dragged out of the car and followed the Alpha behind him.
So many thoughts spiraled through my mind in read or what he would do to me, and my thoughts paused when he signaled for me to halt.
“Call my sons.” He instructed a maid.
“Yes, Alpha.” The maid spoke with a bow and left.
His sons?
What for?
“What's your name?” He asked me.
“I'm An…Anya.” I responded with trembling lips.
“You are going to be a slave here, and I detest laziness. So, if you've been used to getting things done for you, get ready for work!” He informed me.
I didn't get the time to digest that information as my nostrils caught different scents.
“Father!” They called out to him as they approached him happily.
My eyes widened and my breath seized at the incredibly handsome guys he called his sons.
“Adrian, Anthony, Andy, meet Anya. I present her to you as your plaything. You can do anything you wish or desire to do to her.” He spoke and my eyes widened in shock.
The triplets all stared at me, and just from their expressions, I could tell that I was in for a lot of trouble.
