Chapter 6

1056 Words
Sandi After Principal Anderson had finished speaking, our class of graduating students had to sit on the stage in silence as other members of the school faculty made their way up to the podium to give speeches. As I sat there listening to my now former teachers drone on and trying to come across as funny, I realized just how much I wasn't going to miss any of them. After today, I would never have to sit in silence and listen to teachers who loved nothing more than to hear themselves talk, drone on and on endlessly ever again. My days of enduring their endless torture were now over. After the school faculty members had finally finished giving their speeches, a few class members got up and gave speeches. During our classmates' speeches, we shared a few laughs, and a few tears. It felt nice to take a moment to reminisce about our time as students. Once all the speeches were done, Principal Anderson made his way back to the podium once more. I thought he was going to speak some more, but to my surprise, he began to call each student up to receive their diplomas. When it was almost my turn to go up and accept my diploma, I stood there waiting on stage with nervous butterflies fluttering around in my stomach. Principal Anderson finally called out my name, "Sandi Colton." At the sound of my name, a cheer erupted within the auditorium, and the butterflies in my stomach suddenly felt like fruit bats riding roller coasters at an amusement park. I was so nervous. I could hear people clapping and shouting out enthusiastically from in the audience. As I walked over to Principal Anderson, I was shaking. I reached out and shook Principal Anderson's hand, and he gave me a smile. "You did incredibly well this year. Though given your previous academic history, I don't think I should be surprised. You should be proud of yourself. Well done," he said. "Thank you," I replied, returning his smile. This was my moment to shine. This was the moment when all my hard work finally paid off. I took my diploma and smiled as Principal Anderson took the tassel on my graduation cap and shifted it over to the left side of my cap. Once he was done, I returned to my seat. I remained seated as other students were called up to collect their diplomas. As I sat there, I suddenly felt like a goldfish in an aquarium. Almost like I was under the intense scrutiny of someone. It was strange how suddenly the feeling hit me. I had been on stage for award presentations before, and I had never felt the way I was currently feeling. Was it the werewolves? Were they here? Were they watching us right now? But as I thought about that, I realized it couldn't be possible. If the werewolves were here watching the graduation ceremony, then wouldn't people have seen them? They wouldn't be able to remain hidden throughout a private graduation ceremony. The more I thought about it, the more I began to convince myself that my imagination was getting the best of me. My attention was pulled back to Principal Anderson as the last student collected his diploma. In the crowd, I heard the hushed murmurings of parents who were eager to hug their newly graduated children. Principal Anderson announced, "Congratulations graduating class of 2025!" The students seated around me on stage all took their caps off and threw their caps high into the air. I joined in, flinging my cap into the air. I looked at the faces of my classmates. They were all so happy! Lindsay appeared beside me. "We did it! Can you believe it? We actually graduated! No more school. No more assessments. Oh, it's like a miracle," she said, her voice filled with so much enthusiasm. "I know. All the hard work finally paid off. All the late night study sessions and stress over exams and assignments is over. It is such a relief," I told her. "It sure is! This is our reward. We've finally made it Sandi. We are not kids anymore. We are adults now, just like Principal Anderson said," she declared. "I cannot believe we have finally graduated from high school," I told Lindsay. People began making their way towards the entrance of the auditorium. I could hear my former classmates laughing and joking all around me and Lindsay. We began to follow the crowd towards the entrance of the auditorium, leaving our caps where they had fallen on the floor. Once we were outside, the first people we saw were Lindsay's parents. Lindsay ran up to her parents and threw her arms around them in excitement. As I watched her happily hugging her parents, someone handed me my previously discarded cap. Lindsay's parents looked at me, and her mother said, "Sandi, honey, congratulations on graduating." "Thank you," I replied, smiling at them both. Lindsay's mother walked over to me and quietly asked, "Did you see them?" "Who?" I asked, momentarily confused by her question. "The werewolves," she replied. I stared at Lindsay's mother as I let her words sink in. "Um... wait... are you saying there were werewolves in the auditorium just now?" I asked her. "Yes. Of course. They attend the graduation ceremony to see the students in person. I bet they are watching the students right now as well," she replied. Her words made me nervous, and I looked around trying to see if I could see them. I mean, they were monsters after all, so... how could anyone possibly miss them? As I looked, I began to think about how during the graduation ceremony I had gotten that feeling of being watched. Had the werewolves been the reason for that? Had I been right? I had convinced myself I had been imagining it. But according to Lindsay's mom, the werewolves were here. "Don't think about that right now. You girls have just graduated. Take a moment to enjoy yourselves," Lindsay's father said. I looked at him and decided to do what he had said. I am now a high school graduate. Happy with the accomplishment of having made it to the end of my high school education, I went to find my parents.
