----Insanity----
***Arsen's POV***
The warmth I felt from her stayed with me as I opened a mind link to Will.
“Hey, I met her, but she didn’t react like a normal she-wolf finding her mate. She didn’t react at all, only intense fear when I told her my name.”
“Is she not a wolf? This would be an extremely rare occurrence if an Alpha’s fated mate isn’t a wolf. It isn’t unheard of but extremely rare. Looks like you’ll need to win her heart with candy, flowers, dates and all that stuff.” Will mocked me with the last sentence playfully.
“I’m willing to go above and beyond for Sophia.”
“Okay, Casanova. If you are done, I could use some help with these meetings. They are absolutely brutal!” Will sounded exasperated.
“On it.” I turned off the mind link and checked the time.
“We should be meeting with the residential commission board now.” I groaned with annoyance as I morphed into my wolf and ran towards the town.
Arriving at the building, I transformed back, realizing that Sophia had my jacket.
“s**t. Oh well.” I shrugged as I went into the meeting.
Will shot me a look, wondering where I went as I had dirt and leaves on my clothing. I shrugged, grinning before taking over the meeting. If they wanted to meet with me, they would just have to deal with me being a bit dirty.
After the meetings, I stretched and yawned from sheer boredom. I couldn’t get Sophia out of my head though and I wanted to see her again. My father met up with us after his meetings, looking as solemn as ever.
“Your son found his mate!” Will chimed happily and my father lifted an eyebrow.
“Oh? Why isn’t she here, then? Newly fated mates are usually inseparable.” My father said.
My features scrunched up in confusion. “That’s the thing. I don’t think she’s a wolf. She didn’t react to me like a normal fated pair does.”
I continued, my features smoothing back out, bragging to Will. “I don’t care though! I will win her heart in any way that I can. Will, you should have seen her eyes though! They were these bright, golden eyes. I’ve never seen anything quite like it. They were so beautiful. Her jet black hair glimmered in the sunshine as well! She’s a goddess!”
I didn’t see my father stiffen as I chatted with Will. His eyes and demeanor seemed to darken but I was blind to it.
“Son, I’ll meet you back at the mansion. I need to take care of a few things.” Not a second passed that my father morphed into his wolf and raced away from us.
“Hey, what’s up with him?” Will gestured.
“No idea. He just gets in those moods sometimes. Hopefully, he doesn’t do anything like attack a pack because of his silly prophecy. I bet the seer was an old coot wanting to get some money for a meal!” I rolled my eyes, growing angry at what my father had done in the past.
Thinking about it, I had spent almost every waking second since I became the Alpha trying to make amends for his mistakes. Trying to repair the broken bonds between old ally packs that my father double crossed. I had only three packs that wouldn’t even give me a second of time: The PurpleMoon Pack, the Redclaw Pack, and the NewMoon Pack. I had wracked my brain for ways to gain peace with them as well.
Growing up, I had heard stories of how my father went to various packs, murdering all who stood in his way if there was a being that matched the prophecy’s description in any way, shape or form. He was dubbed “The Insane Alpha” by the other packs as he was ruthless in his quest to find this mystical being to prevent his ruin.
My mother had told me a bit of the prophecy when I was younger but over the years, I couldn’t recall the full thing. I just remembered a piece of it and silently cursed myself for not remembering more of it.
Find the wolf with fur like the sun.
Unfortunately, my father saw ruin first hand and my mother was slain by a pack retaliating against us. Seeing my mother laying there in a pool of blood, completely lifeless absolutely broke me and I swore that I would never be like my father. I swore to fix what he destroyed when I became Alpha.
He was never the same after that. He would hole himself up in his study with tons of ancient books and scrolls. His fierce eyes dulled into soulless, empty orbs. He only took care of himself when we had to go out for pack business, like today. He was an empty shell of a man. I heard him chant, almost hypnotically, about finding this wolf to prevent even more ruin from within his study numerous nights.
The pack started to grow weary and fearful of my father's mental state as it was apparent that he was going through a complete breakdown. Due to this mental breakdown, the pack appointed me as the Alpha at the tender age of fourteen years old. I had always wondered if my father decided to not believe this prophecy, if he would not have had this ruin of himself. Would my mother still be alive?
It took five years to get my father to resume a somewhat normal life. We forced him to come out of his study and attend meetings. We urged him to keep up his hygiene and his personal friendships. He was starting to slowly resemble the Alpha we knew before he fell into utter despair.
Seeing his struggle, I just knew I had to forge my own path and not be swayed by this silly prediction that my father believed wholeheartedly.
It just never dawned on me that the girl with eyes like the prettiest gold that immediately captured my heart would cause my father to completely fall into the pits of insanity.
