Chapter 13

Becca's POV A few hours later… "Long time no see." A voice said coming from the back. A familiar voice, one I know that I can't mistake for another. A voice that I have been really longing to hear. The voice belonged to Shawn. I slowly turned back, now on my feet, and seeing him I froze on the spot. Into evening and night. "I expected more of a welcome for someone who wanted to come to see me at the military tent." He said walking close to me and feeling my heart ponder in fear. This was too much for me to take in. I thought I was actually ready but it was just my eagerness on its verge. "Hii…Shawn."I managed to utter out of my mouth as he was only a foot away from me. "Hi Becca it has been quite a while and you don't really look different, just probably a little pale." He muttered out, staring at me keenly as I felt butterflies running freely around my belly that I could hardly maintain my balance. "Yeah, everything has been tiring over the years. You don't look the same, you look tired. Something is just different about you and I have not seemed to notice it." I said staring at his whole body under a single glance but I didn't really find anything. I stared over at him before I noticed his hair. His long and full hair was now a low cut. "Why did you cut your hair?" I found myself blurting out. I didn't want to say it out loud and not that way because we were no longer together and it wasn't my business so I couldn't talk to him like I talked to him before. He noticed this and a sad smile was placed on his face. "It's no problem Becca you worry too much. It's fine. I got tired of the hair and now that I was a war beta it was going to be hard for me to maintain the hair without all the necessary treatment I need to maintain so I just decided to cut it off." He explained going to Uber to the bank of the lake like he was going to dip his body into it anytime soon. "You have grown to love this place, especially since it is more beautiful than it was before. The new Alpha did quite a good job in this. " He commented on taking a deep skate in the water. "Yes, I think I am really going to love this place. I just got back about a month ago or four weeks ago. I came to help with the pandemic." I started standing directly at his back so that I could smell his appealing scent. I have really missed this so much. "So after helping with the pandemic you would be going back?" He asked me to turn back at a slow pace. "I don't really know but I don't think so. I am trying to make the best decision for kade." I said out in a low voice. "Who's kade?" He asked in a confused voice. It was then I remembered he didn't know about kade. He didn't know that I later had a baby. "Kade is my son," I said in a low but very excited voice. I didn't want it to seem like I wasn't happy about my son because I was very happy I had him and I am still very happy he is with my life. I never want to have that feeling of why I had him. "So you had a son. I didn't know you were moving on that well." He asked with some certain emotions in his eyes which I found Very hard to understand. "I had a son. Although it started off as a mistake, his father is the present Alpha sort of a coincidence." I said out and I don't know when a smile creaked at the corner of my lips. He noticed my smile and made a light frown. "So the new Alpha, the one that overthrew me, was also the person who got you pregnant?" I nodded in reply to his question sadly. "I want to work things out with Dax because of Kade. I don't want him to miss the love his father has to offer because of the strife between us" I shrugged. The look on his face was not pleasant. No doubt he was sad at my tale. "Why are you annoyed?" I asked, raising my voice a bit. "Remember you left me for someone else, so… I see no reason why you're angry," I said and rolled my eyes at my words. "It wasn't on purpose. I left when I found my mate" Shawn replied "I left when I found my mate" I mimicked "did you at least call to find out how I was faring? Of course, you, didn't" I snapped angrily. Deep down I knew he didn't leave me because he wanted to but because he had found his original mate but I was annoyed. I was annoyed because of his inability to call or text at least to know how I was faring. I felt my eyes becoming misty. I was not going to let my tears fall. Not now, not ever. I'm not going to appear weak before him. Shawn was mute. The tension in the air was becoming thick as we stared at each other though lost in thought. I missed the years I spent with Shawn, I missed his smile, laughter, the way he cuddled me whenever I was down, his fun, and a*********s which made my ribs c***k up because of intense laughter. Everything, I missed him for everything. "I missed you Shawn. I missed every bit of you" I mumbled. He didn't reply to me but the look on his face gave me the reply I wanted. He missed me just the same way I missed him. "So… how have you been coping?" Shawn asked with his hands in his pockets. He had broken the silence between us, an action that gladdened me because I wanted us to talk at length rather than staring at ourselves. "I'll say fine, good, pleasant. Anything but not the negative" I chuckled nervously as I twisted my fingers. "How about you?" I asked "Well, I'll say the opposite of yours. Things haven't been pleasant with me since you left" I gasped at his response even without hearing the detail of his tale. "What happened?" I asked "A war broke out where I was dethroned to the position of a military beta by your…" he paused. I could detect the spite he had for Dax in his voice. He ran his hand through his hair, an act he had gotten used to since he was a little boy. He always does that whenever he is pissed and it works like magic because when he is done, it seems as if the fire which was burning in him had been quenched. "She left," he mumbled after a brief silence. I gave him a questioning look but he ignored it so I decided to use my words. "Who left?" "My supposed mate. She left when I needed her the most. She left when she discovered she wouldn't wear the crown. She left when…" I had to place my hand on his shoulder to prevent him from going further because if he do, he was going to blow up everything and we were going to be in a deep trouble "Calm down Shawn" I cooed. I began to run my hand up and down his back in a bid to soothe his raging nerves. I wasn't certain if this worked but I was glad he wasn't raving like a beast anymore. I felt sorry for him but I wasn't going to make the same mistake I made with him several years ago. I wished I could help him find happiness once more but I was lost on how to go about it. "Becca" he called "Uh…" I replied, still rubbing his back. "Are you going to return after the pandemic subsides or wipe out completely?" He asked with a glint in his eyes. I didn't know if he was excited or sad but all I knew was that there was a glint in his eyes when he spoke. "I won't. I've decided to stay" I replied "A lot of people in the pack keep dying each passing day. Please do your best to save them else the pack will be completely wiped out" he said whilst I nodded. No doubt the rate of mortality was alarming. I was scared at the task before me but I wasn't going to admit it. I was going to try my best just as Shaun had urged me to save their lives. "It's not going to be easy but I'll try my best" I assured "I know you'll. Thank you" he hugged me but I moved away. I wasn't ready to make body contact with him yet. I didn't trust myself when it came to his touch. "I'm sorry but… let's keep it low. Please" I pleaded. He shrugged then looked straight ahead. The sun had gone to the other part of the earth giving the moon the opportunity to cast its rays on us. We kept talking non stop; just the way I wanted. We talked about what happened after my departure six years ago. We shared our joy, pains, excitement and every other emotion we felt during those six years of my absence. We were still chatting when a maid walked up to us. She was the one I had begged to help me smuggle Shawn in as I was in a dire need to see him. If alpha Dax discovers Shawn was in the mansion, there would be a lot of trouble. No doubt it was a risky assignment because paraventure we got caught in this act, she was definitely going to lose her life. That was the reason I asked her to bring Shawn to the lake where it would be hard for the occupants of the mansion to detect. "Time up Shawn. Alpha Dax is requesting to see her now" she whispered. She looked over her shoulders at intervals as if someone was after her. I couldn't blame her because I felt her plight. It was a risk I wasn't going to take for anyone no matter how the person was close to me. I admired her for her bravery and at the same time prayed she wouldn't be caught. I was definitely not going to forget her kind gesture even if I develop amnesia later on. "Let's say our goodbyes," Shawn said quickly. No doubt he was scared. "Yeah. Goodbye till next time" I said. He nodded as the maid led him away. I felt bad for him so I ran up to them. Pulling him into a hug, I mumbled in his chest "Goodnight. Have a good night rest" "You too" After what seemed like forever, the maid returned to the lake where I sat. I haven't answered the Alpha Dax call yet. "Successful?" I asked with a thumping heart. She didn't use her words, rather she nodded. I sighed that we didn't get into trouble.
