They awoke the next morning feeling revitalized and eager to begin their new life together.
They were ecstatic to begin the new chapter together in their ideal house.
Liz and Don's first week in their freshly restored house proceeded smoothly. They'd spent months planning and supervising the refurbishment, and everything appeared to be in order. Their days were spent unpacking, arranging furniture, and exploring every nook and corner of their ideal house.
However, as the second week approached, odd things began to occur. When they were alone, objects began to move on their own and they could hear footsteps echoing around the home.
Doors would creak open on their own, and they'd hear strange whispering in the middle of the night. They attempted to explain it away, telling themselves it was just the house shifting or their imaginations running wild. They did, after all, go crazy on their first visit to this mansion.
However, as time went, the events got more regular, intense, and unsettling. They discover artifacts that have been relocated or misplaced, as well as weird shadows moving over the walls. When they were alone in the house, they began to experience an overpowering sensation of fear.
Liz started having horrible dreams. Liz opened her eyes to see a dark figure standing at the foot of their bed. She screamed waking Don awake, but when they switched on the lights, no one was there. They recognized they weren't alone in the home, and something was wrong.
Liz's nightmares persisted every night, and the presence in the home appeared to grow stronger. Don, who had always been suspicious of the supernatural, began to suspect that something undesirable was taking place.
Liz noticed a strange sound coming from upstairs one evening when they were seated in the living room.
"Did you hear that?" she whispered to Don.
Don paused for a second before shrugging. "It's probably just the wind; remember, this place is old."
But Liz couldn't ignore the sensation that something wasn't quite right. "I think we should go check it out," she replied as she stood up.
Don sighed but followed her up the stairs. They heard the noise again as they neared the top landing - a faint whisper, like if someone was chatting in another room.
"Hello?" Don said, but there was no response.
They proceeded down the corridor until they reached a locked door. Liz paused before pushing it open.
They noticed the dark figure again as they pushed open the door. It was in the center of the room, and its black silhouette was more clear than before. The fury was visible in his eyes. The air in the room was thick and frigid.
Liz's heart was pounding in her chest.
Her heart pounded in her chest as she paused in her footsteps. She'd seen the dark figure before, but never in such detail. Its fury was real, and she could feel her own terror increasing in reaction.
She attempted to control her breathing and relax, but her mind was racing with questions. Who was this person? What exactly did it want from her?
The figure approached Liz as they both stood there, fixed to the spot. It's deliberate and slow. Liz could feel a cold sweat forming on her brow, and she realized they had to move quickly if they wanted to get out of there alive.
Don collected all of his bravery as his heart pounded in his chest. He took a step nearer and said, "Who are you? What do you want from us?"
The ghostly figure didn't respond, but it moved closer, its gaze riveted on Liz.
Don noticed the hands clenched into fists and realized Liz was the target and was in grave danger.
Without further thinking, he turned, grabbed Liz's wrist, and began to flee the room. They both turned to look back as they approached the safety of the corridor, but the dark figure was nowhere to be found.
Liz and Don were both aware that they had nearly avoided a horrific encounter.
"Liz, what just happened there?" Don said, his expression filled with anxiety.
Liz felt shaken and vulnerable.
Liz "..." and tears spring up in her eyes.
She was trembling. She recalls the hatred she saw in its eyes and how it made her feel.
"Do you have any idea who this figure could be? Could it be someone you know?" Don questioned.
Liz made a shaky motion with her head. "No, I don't recognize the figure at all, but I have a feeling it's after me for some reason I don't understand."
Don paused for a time before saying, "Perhaps we should do some research; we could look into the history of the house and see if there's any connection to you or your family."
Liz agreed... "At this point, I'm willing to try anything."
Liz and Don spent the following days investigating the old house's history. They chatted with neighbors and looked through old documents, but finding further information was proving tough.
Liz discovered an ancient journal stashed away in a nook near the old fireplace while poking around. It appeared to be from the early 1900s, the same time period as the home. Her eyes widened in shock as she opened it and began reading.
"Don, you need to see this," she said as she motioned him closer.
They read the journal of a young woman who had lived in the house more than a century before. She wrote about her life, her challenges, and her love.
As they continued reading, they began to hear whispering which became louder as they read the journal, until they could nearly make out the words.
Liz and Don exchanged glances, their hearts pounding.
