“What is going on?” She asked herself as she was in a state of bewilderment. She was yet to understand.
Lily finally came out after making sure that her brother was gone. “Shuu shuu shuu!, don’t cry, don’t cry” she held Sandra who was slowly going down as tears dropped from her eyes uncontrollably.
“Murderer? Jenny? Father?” She said still trying to put the pieces together. Lily who was holding her got scared as her behavior was unusual. “Sandra!!” Lily called out loudly as she held her face and looked at her.
She did this in a bid to bring Sandra back from wherever she was psychologically.Sandra stops mumbling and placed her head on Lily's shoulder and cried bitterly.
She was hurt, she felt used and mostly she felt ashamed.” Alex has been cheating and now he is done with me”. She said feeling pity for herself.
Lily kept calm and made sure not to ask her any questions because she was taught to not ask or say anything to someone who is clearly angry or crying. She gave Sandra time and just let her cry on her shoulder.
Sandra then started talking in between her crying, “Alex brought another woman home. She is none other than Jenny.”
She said crying more, “Now he calls me a murderer’s daughter and wants me to sign the divorce papers he’ll be sending tomorrow”.
She said in more tears as she already believed that he was never coming back to her now that he is with his true love.
*FLASHBACK*
Alex and Jenny were in high school together. Their family was brought together through business.
Mr Freeman Heathcliff and Mr Steve Williams were so acquainted. Business was booming for both of them. The children went to the same school so Alex and Jenny were friends.
When they were fifteen years old, Alex proposed his feelings towards Jenny and she was very happy about it.
She told her father and he rebuked her from dating him or having anything to do with the Williams again.
She got confused “this was always what you wanted dad, what’s wrong now?” She asked him standing up from her chair in perplexity.
“Steve has been losing contracts for a while now and his business is sinking. If I am correct in the coming years, he would have sold most of his properties to be able to still stay in business.”
“That’s not what I want for mys..’ he paused and then said, “that’s not what I want for my baby” he then continued.
“Turn him down and make acquaintances with George. His father is part of the ruling business persons in this country.”
“You’re beautiful Jenny, lure him with your beauty and then let him come around and one day I’ll ask for me and his father to meet.”
“Boom!!, our lives have then become even better” he said with a devious smile. She went to her room and started crying.
“I shouldn’t have told him. Now I can’t date the person I like. I don’t even like that George guy” she said crying as she had no say whatsoever in this because she had to do all he says so that she can gain his trust and love.
The next day in school, she completely avoided Alex. She didn’t want to see him. Anytime he tries to approach her, she’ll suddenly flee from him.
This caused Alex to worry so much seeing as he really likes Jenny so much. So he decided that he would write her a letter.
He wrote the letter, after he made the decision to write to her. He firstly apologized for whatever he might have done to make her avoid him.
He also professed his feelings for her in the letter. Further, he asked for five minutes of her time and that they should meet at the love garden in the school during lunch break.
He kept it under her table and left. She was talking with her girls and then the teacher entered. They all had to go in. She noticed Alex’s’ gaze on her, but she didn’t dare to look at him.
She just went to her desk and was about to get her book out when she felt a paper. She brought it out and saw it was really a paper.
“What? I didn’t tear my book.” She said with a frown as she started opening the letter. “Hi Jenny. I decided to write you since youve been avoiding me. I’m sorry if I had done something wrong….”
“Please come to the love garden when it’s lunch break, I’d like to see you”. After reading the letter, she raised her head up and saw Alex still looking at her.
She ignored him and made sure she pretended to listen all through the class. When the teacher left the class, she went to the girls bathroom.
She made sure to carry the letter with her. She went into one of the toilets after checking and confirming that no one was there.
She took the letter out, read the letter again and burst into tears. “I didn’t mean to hurt you Alex, it’s my father. I can’t go against him” she mumbled in her tears.
After crying, she came out of the toilet as it was just a few minutes till lunch break. She arranged her brown hair and washed her face. Few minutes later, she came out of the toilet.
“Jenny, where have you been?” Her friends asked her as she returned to the class. “Nowhere important” she replied as she secretly dropped the letter in her desk and locked it.
“I won’t be accompanying you girls for lunch, I have something very important to deal with. She said nothing further and left immediately before she could be asked any questions.
She went straight to the garden thinking that she was going to wait for him but to her shock, she saw him standing tall with his back facing her.
Though she didn’t see him in the class when she went to drop the letter in her bag, she didn’t expect him to be early.
The place smelled fresh as the green and red flowers filled the room. It was a very beautiful scenery and it was calm and peaceful.
She moved closer but still kept her distance. “You’re here” Alex said without looking back. “How did you know?” she asked as she wasn’t expecting him to know about her presence just yet.
“I can tell from your perfume, my smelling skill is very high,” he said, turning around to look at her. They stood there looking at each other.
“Did I do something wrong?” He finally asked after a few minutes of silence. He started moving close to her as he stared into her dark hazel eyes.
“No, you didn't,” she said, moving backwards a bit. “Then why Jenny? Why are you avoiding me? Is it because I asked you out?”
He asked, feeling hurt as she moved backwards when he went forward to her. “I can’t be your girlfriend” she said, trying to act like she meant it.
She swallowed the pain she felt as she was saying what she was saying. “Why don’t you want to be my girlfriend?” he asked with hurt evident in his voice.
“I just can't,” she said as she yelled a bit. This took him aback. Then he asked further,“Do you like someone else?” He said boldly, trying to hide his pain.
*no response* he chuckled as he got no reply. “You like someone else, Jenny. Why then did you act like you had a thing for me? Why then did you lead me on?” He yelled this time, looking so angry.
“Don’t you yell at me. Did you ever ask me if I liked you? I was only being nice. How dare you yell at me? Do I look like your girlfriend?” She said as she feigned anger. She only used his yelling as an excuse to get herself angry.
Truth be told, she hates being yelled at, but she wouldn’t even get angry if she deserved it and Alex yelled at her.
He smiled trying so hard to hold his tears. “You like someone else Jenny!!” He slowly said as though he was hoping he was wrong….
