THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH
Elara barely slept.
At four in the morning, she found Lucian in the kitchen.
He was preparing coffee.
“You knew my father was alive.”
“Yes.”
“Where is he?”
“I don't know.”
“You're beginning to repeat yourself.”
“Because the answer hasn't changed.”
Elara crossed her arms.
“You're frustrating.”
“I've been told.”
She took the coffee from his hand.
“You're also impossible.”
“Yet you keep following me.”
“You keep saving my life.”
“That isn't an answer.”
She looked at him.
“Maybe I'm curious.”
“About me?”
“About everything.”
His gaze lingered on her.
“You should be careful with curiosity.”
“Why?”
“Because sometimes you discover things you can't forget.”
Before she could respond, an alarm sounded.
Lucian's expression changed.
A holographic map appeared.
“Someone breached the outer perimeter.”
Elara studied the map.
“Three vehicles.”
“Four.”
She pointed.
“There's another one underground.”
Lucian stared at her.
“How did you see that?”
“Their formation is wrong.”
He smiled faintly.
“You really can see everything.”
“No.”
She looked at him.
“Just things other people miss.”
Lucian picked up his weapon.
“Stay here.”
“No.”
“Elara.”
“I'm coming.”
He sighed.
“Fine.”
She smiled.
“Good.”
They moved together through the corridor.
Neither noticed how naturally they had begun moving as a team.
