THE ASSASSINS
The first assassin entered through the eastern corridor.
Lucian intercepted him before he took three steps.
A brief struggle followed.
The man collapsed.
Elara stared.
“You barely touched him.”
“I didn't need to.”
Two more appeared.
Elara moved.
She ducked beneath one attack, struck the man's wrist and twisted.
His weapon fell.
Lucian caught it.
“Not bad.”
She looked offended.
“Not bad?”
“You could improve.”
She raised an eyebrow.
“Show me.”
“Later.”
Another attacker appeared behind her.
Lucian pulled her backward.
The man's blade missed her by centimeters.
Lucian's arm wrapped around her waist as he moved them aside.
For a second, they were pressed together.
Elara felt his heartbeat.
Steady.
Controlled.
Her own was anything but.
Lucian looked down at her.
“You all right?”
“Yes.”
Neither moved.
Then an explosion shook the house.
They separated instantly.
Lucian looked toward the security room.
“They weren't trying to kill us.”
Elara understood.
“They were distracting us.”
He nodded.
“From what?”
The entire house went dark.
A voice came through the speakers.
“From me.”
Elara froze.
Her mother's voice.
