*Jakes POV* “It has been over a month! Why is she not waking up?” I slammed my fist onto my desk. “Alpha, please. She needs time to recover. I told you this. She is severely injured and weak. There is always a chance she won't be able to wake up. But I am doing all that I can to help her.” My pack Doctor was well trusted in my eyes. I've gone to him countless times and always trusted his guidance. I was growing more and more antsy as time passed. This female lay in my packhouse unconscious. I wanted to know who tried to kill her. I refuse to let her die. She has to know some sort of kindness before her time is up. Plus she is so f*****g young! If I had to guess, she’s still a teenager. She was so malnourished though it is hard to tell for sure. I took a calming breath and waited for a second before looking back up. “What can I do?” I asked in almost a whisper. “Sir, there is nothing you can do at this point. She just needs more time”. Doc walked over and placed a hand on my shoulder. I should have been apprehensive about the contact but my mind was elsewhere. I looked over at the still unconscious girl. I watched closely as her heart beat slowly in her chest. That slight rise and fall of her chest gave me some comfort. I was entranced by that steady beat so much so that I didn't realize my beta came in the room. “Boss, we need you upstairs”. I shifted my eyes to him slightly before returning to her. “Jake, we need to discuss the rogue situation. Please, the doc is here. If anything changes he will contact you”. I let out a small sigh. I stood up and scrubbed my hand down my face. “Fine. Let’s go” I said. We walked out of the infirmary and up to the 3rd floor. I opened the door to my office. Walking inside my gamma and a couple members of the patrol were there waiting. I sit down and we begin our conversation. “So what do we know?” I ask. Jermey, a patrol member, speaks first. “Alpha, there have been sightings of rogues on the south, west, and east border”. “Do we know why yet?” Tyler asks. “And why not the North?” Sam asks. Gabe, another patrol leader, speaks next. “The North side is heavily patrolled due to the front gate. However, the most active point is the East side. South and West side have all had minor activity in comparison”. I thought about this for a moment. My men continued to discuss the activity at each point. They talked over the plans for protection. How each is working to track and stop these rogues. I listened to their conversations for over an hour. “Do you think it has something to do with her?” Tyler asked. I looked up and saw my men were now uneasy. They looked at me and waited for my reaction. “It is possible. I mean she was found by the eastern river bank. If that is where the highest activity is… then it is safe to say that she may be what they are looking for. The next question is… Why her?” I stated. My men all looked down confused. We looked at the map on the table in front of us. I scanned over the areas around the river. “Where did you come from?” I asked myself. I felt myself growing more and more hungry. I have been so preoccupied that I haven't eaten all day. I wanted to finish this meeting, grab some food, and go check on her. I checked my watch. 7:23pm. Everyone would be out of the dining hall now. “Guys, I believe that we have accomplished a lot tonight. We can discuss further action later. For now, I need to eat.” I said as I stood up from my chair. They all stood up too and followed me out of my office. I walked down the stairs to the main floor. I entered the dining hall and began to grab a plate of food. “Hey. Care if I join you?” I turned to see Tyler standing at the door. “Sure”. I replied. He walked over and began loading up a plate for himself. We walked to a table and sat down. For a while it was silent as we ate. “So…” he began. I looked up at him for a brief second before going back to eat. “I mean this with no disrespect… but what is going on with you?” I was a bit annoyed at this question but Ty is like a brother to me. I know he means no disregard towards me. “What do you mean?” I asked. “Well.. that girl. She has been under your skin a lot more lately. What is the deal? Is this.. Is she your mate?” he asked. His words were hesitant. I stopped chewing and looked at him. “Uh… I don't think she's my mate. I can't explain it though. I am drawn to protect her though.” I let out a long sigh. “I’m sorry Jake. I know you're wanting to find your mate soon. I wish she was the one. That is really weird though. Maybe it's an age thing? You are 5 years older than her. Maybe your wolf sees her as a little sister or something”. He chuckled. I rolled my eyes. I went to shovel another fork full of food into my mouth when something went off in my head. The hair on my neck stood up and I felt painstakingly numb. Then it was in my head. “Code blue in the infirmary! We need help now!” They must have mindlinked Ty too because he was shaking my shoulders and yelling at me. “Jake! Jake! You need to get there now! Let's go!” I stood up and we both ran downstairs to the infirmary. It was like a horror movie. She was seizing on the table and blood was everywhere. “What..what happened..” I couldn't even bring myself to ask it at first. “She started to seize and her stitches popped open. She's losing too much blood!” “What do we do?” I asked. “I dont have blood on hand for a transfusion! I am not even sure what to do now!” I looked at the scene before me and my wolf let out a cry. I sat in the chair and placed my arm upright on the armrest. “Take my blood Doc.” I said without thinking twice. “Sir, if we do that there is no telling what could happen. If she doesn't have a wolf we could cause more problems.” “Just take it. Save her.” With a sigh, he tied a tourniquet around my arm and the needle was placed in. I watched as he hooked the tube to a machine and then another tube was inserted into her arm. With a couple switches the blood flowed from my arm into the machine and to her. Soon she stopped shaking and she began to settle onto her bed. The color slowly returned to her face. I wanted to reach out and touch her. I stared at her for quite some time. Once she was back to a stable point the doctor removed the lines and bandaged us up. I waited by her bed until everyone had left. Tyler had stood by the door watching the horrific scene unfold. He tried to stay out of the way. His words still rang in my mind. What was the deal with this female? I looked around and saw no one was in the room. I walked closer to her bed and stared at her face. Some hair was stuck to her cheek. I reached my hand down but stopped before touching her. What was I doing?! Ugh! I shook my head and moved my hand down again. My fingers touched her skin and a warm rush of energy shot through my hand. I moved the hair from her face and to my surprise those big dark lashes fluttered. I saw those hazel colored eyes peek out at me and I didnt realize the smile that grew across my face. As soon as it happened it was gone. Her eyes shut again and I wanted to make sure I hadn't imagined it. I can't believe that just happened. “Well human. What do you think?” Blaze asked. “I think…” I stopped for a moment. Then at the same time we said the words that were crowding our mind. “She’s our mate”.
