Jess was slammed backwards as bullets hammered into his chest. He stumbled, falling to his knees, as more bullets slammed home. His shield was holding… for the moment.
Screams erupted around him as the crowd registered what had happened. People started to run. The gunfire cut off for a moment. Jess lurched to his feet, pulling his laser g*n free, and tried to move with the crowd. Bullets slammed into him again.
Not just into him. Two women who hadn’t gotten far enough away were struck too, both crashing to the ground. Jess felt like he was going to throw up. They were dead because of him. Then anger swamped him. He brought the g*n up and started firing.
