Come along, Kris, we will put your bag in a locker, and you will be given a bag with your new possessions. Each of you is given a bag with items specific to your classification and your study partners.” She moved, and she heard the guard next to her, but she didn’t feel like she was in her body.
She was taken down a long hallway, and the doors buzzed open for the guard who escorted her to the tower. “The control room watches all movement on camera and controls the doors. There are hourly headcounts, too, but things run a little differently in Zeus T. You will learn the routine easily, though.”
The hallway ended, and they exited into a courtyard surrounded by another silver-coated fence. A guard shack between two gates housed two men. They didn’t speak, but let them through each gate one at a time. The ringing of the metal as it slid open and shut made her tense. This entire thing made her tense, and she was questioning her choice, but resolved to do her best. She wanted to see Ronald and find out if what they were saying about him was true.
As they waited to enter the building, she gazed up. The stars did little to light up the night sky, but she hated to leave them behind to enter the tower. There were few windows, and she hoped they would have daily access to the courtyard. She thrived outdoors, and being locked up for too long would make it challenging to stay positive.
She was ushered into the base level, stepping into a control chamber. The floor buzzed, and she could see a grid in the flooring. “It’s electric. The guards in the tower control can shock us right where we stand,” her escort confided. She shuddered, and the guard laughed. “Come on now, you’re going to need more backbone than that to handle these guys.”
She nodded, “Yeah, I got it. It just seems so cruel to electrocute someone like that.” The guard shrugged one shoulder, “It’s necessary sometimes to prevent people from getting hurt.” They moved out of the control room and passed a couple of doors before taking an elevator up to the second floor.
There, a nurse waited for her with a large mesh bag. “HI, I’m nurse Carol. I only work the tower, so you will get used to seeing me. Here is your bag of things, and through that door is the locker room. Pick one and put your bag in it. Then bring me the key. I will keep it safe for you.”
Kristen did as instructed and brought the key back to the nurse. She was an older woman with blond hair and a thin build. Her mate mark was prominent and easily visible in the V-necked scrubs she wore. “Perfect. Now, Officer Brightwell will take you to the dorms. You will have to share with the guys up there. Awkward at first, but necessary for the study.”
The officer, Brightwell, Carol had said, led her back to the elevator and up to another floor. When they stepped off, she was startled to see the dorms. The center of the room was like an open living and dining room. There was a metal table large enough to sit six people bolted to the floor, a television mounted on the wall with a transparent cover over it to keep the inmates from breaking it or removing it from the wall.
There was also a microwave and a coffee pot on a metal shelf. Then, a cell in each direction with solid walls, doors with a small window to look inside, and a locked slot for things to be slid through to the inmate. That’s not what surprised her, however. What made her look around the space with big eyes and parted lips were the nice things in the cells that she glimpsed through the windows.
The men were not in their cells, which was kind of odd this late at night, or so she thought. The cover to each window was open, and she could see large beds with plush bedding and many other things she had missed during her time running. Inmates had a better life than she had in the past few years. That was depressing.
“Okay, here is where I leave you. The inmates will be back in a few minutes. I would wait at the table. If they catch you peeping into their rooms, they may not like it.” Officer Brightwell left her sitting at the table, and she began looking through the bag she was given as a distraction. She hadn’t found anything interesting, but she hadn’t gotten too deep in the bag when the door opened.
Not three, but four men entered the room with blank faces. None of them paid much attention to her as a guard removed their restraints. The first one was the tallest. He was huge in every way; muscles bunched with every movement, and his alpha aura hit her hard. She couldn’t resist baring her neck in submission before he even looked at her. He was strong, and she recognized he would be a hard one to control. As she submitted to the first male, the second one growled softly.
He was a little shorter in height and thin, but even glancing his way, she could see that he was strong. She had no idea why he was upset, but she knew it was essential to her safety to ease his anger. The alpha had not acknowledged her, so she moved to address the growling one, but before she could, the third man ripped her attention away.
“Krist-” She cut him off before he could say her real name. “Ronald!” She ran to him and threw her arms around his waist in a tight hug. He didn’t pull away, but he wasn’t happy to see her. “I haven’t seen you in years. What are you doing here? You can’t stay.” She shook her head at his words, “No, it’s my choice, and I’m not leaving.” He eyed her up and down, assessing her. Finally, he sighed, “It’s not safe for you here. These men, Thorn, Aaron, and Win, they’re dangerous. There is a reason they’re separated from the general population. You’re not built for this. You will die here.”
She gave him a sharp look, then, beneath her breath, she told him, “In here, my name is Kris Lauren.” The tilt of his chin in recognition was so slight, she almost wondered if she had imagined it, but she didn’t have a chance to learn more. The fourth man made his presence known with a cackle.
She turned to face him and inhaled a sharp breath. He was beautiful, with striking golden brown eyes and pale blond hair, but there was something in his gaze that screamed unhinged. This man was mentally ill. She could read it all over him. There were only supposed to be three males. Other than Ronald, she had no idea which ones were supposed to be in the tower, and which one was being secretly kept there.
The fact that they were holding someone secretly made warning bells ring in her head. First, the lottery. Now this. Not to mention their silence regarding her apex status, there were already too many red flags for her to feel comfortable.
