Kristen’s eyes fluttered, struggling to stay open. She was tired, but she needed more information. The fair-haired man continued to watch her with a wide grin. Ronald stepped closer to her, his voice low. “The Lunar Surge is in three days. This is going to be a nightmare.” The guard gathered the chains; their rattling made her shiver. It was the wrong reaction.
Instantly, all four men reacted to her show of weakness. Each in their own way. Ronald moved in front of her, cutting off her view of the odd one. His stance was protective. Her gaze snapped over to the alpha. He seemed uninterested in her, a bored expression on his handsome face. The other one, with the slimmer build, eyed her curiously and smirked at Ronald. She glanced back at the odd one. He watched her with a knowing look that provoked her desire to run, but she didn’t.
She stood taller, squaring her shoulders. “I will get through it. I’ve agreed to participate, and I am aware of the risks.” Ronald remembered the experiments they had subjected him to since he arrived. He couldn’t let her go through that. “Fine, I will help you get through the surge. You must be exhausted. Let me show you where you will be safe to sleep.”
The curious man approached, interrupting their conversation. Ronald tensed, but didn’t stop him from talking to her. He was different than the other men here. His eyes held a teasing gleam, but there was something else about him. He had brown hair, darker than hers, and blue eyes. His slim build didn’t take away from his presence. He tilted his head and leaned into her personal space.
His breath caressed against her neck. “Well, hello, beautiful. I take it you’re our study partner.” She nodded, “Yes. I don’t believe I caught your name.” She didn’t know what to think about his proximity. It was unnerving, but she tried not to let it show. “I’m Aaron Grant. Rogue and wrongly imprisoned by our lovely cellmate over there.” He motioned to the alpha.
Kris turned her head to look in the direction he pointed. “Who is he?” Aaron chuckled. “Hmm. I’ll be a good boy and cooperate with the experiment. I’ll even answer your questions, but I want help getting out of here.” He didn’t let her respond; instead, he continued, “ Why don’t I introduce you to the scowling creature over there?”
His offer felt like a challenge, and she wasn’t one to back down. So, she agreed. “Sure, introduce us.” Throwing another smirk at Ronald, Aaron took her arm and led her across the cell as if it were a ballroom. He stopped in front of the alpha. “Ah, my sweet, I’m afraid I was so distracted by your beauty that I didn’t catch your name.”
Kristen resisted the urge to roll her eyes and forced a small smile. His flirting would be challenging to get used to. “I’m Kris. Will you please tell me who my other study partner is?” He gave the large man in front of them a grin that screamed trouble. “Kris, let me introduce you to Prince Thorn. Second son of the Lycan King. Sentenced to life in Zeus T for staging a coup threatening the heir.”
Aaron returned his attention to Thorn. “He has a terrible disposition. While I will enjoy cooperating in the study for a beauty like you, he will be of no use. The man is dead inside.” She eyed the two men before her. Thorn was stoic as Aaron described, but she knew to get paid, she would have to get them all to participate. He would be her biggest challenge.
“Hi, Prince Thorn.” She greeted, dropping her eyes to the floor in respect and praying he would respond to submission. He didn’t. His eyes remained cold, and his demeanor was withdrawn. She glanced over at Aaron, who shrugged. “Told you. Why don’t we go to my cell, and you can get some rest?”
Ronald cut in, his tone sharp, “No. Aaron, she will be staying in my room. Come on, Kris. Let's go.” She smiled at Aaron; it was the second one she had offered him, which surprised her. She wasn’t very friendly with people she didn’t know. Especially men, but she was at ease with him, and her role in the study made it necessary that she be friendly.
“Thank you, Aaron, it’s kind of you to offer, but not tonight. I would like to speak to Ronald and get some sleep.” She wasn’t going to hide her familiarity with Ronald, and it didn’t escape Aaron. His eyes flickered between the two of them before he agreed. “Of course. You can come bunk with me anytime. I think you will enjoy it much better.”
Ronald growled in warning at Arron’s jab. The blond man, whom she hadn’t met yet, watched with an odd look she could only describe as hunger. Not that he wanted to eat her, thank Goddess, but that he wanted something from her.
She turned her attention to Ronald. Thorn was still ignoring her, and right now, she didn’t care. “Ron, can you introduce me to the other man? I’m assuming that’s Win?” Ronald sighed, “Yes, but stay back. He’s lost it and is very dangerous. They can’t possibly expect you to work with him.” Kristen shrugged one shoulder, “As far as I know, I have to work with all of you.”
The blond man eyed her up and down, but she stayed a few feet away. Ronald introduced them. “Kris, this is Winfred. Why did his mother give him such an awful name? I don’t know, but we call him Win.” She looked closely at the man. Trying to decide what was wrong with him. He grinned, “Hello, Kris. It’s good to meet you finally. The process of getting participants here for the study has been long.”
She was surprised when he greeted her, discussing the experiment. “Oh, I’m sure it has been a long process for you. It was a last-minute decision for me, so everything is moving rather quickly.” Win’s grin grew wider, as if he knew something she didn’t. She tried to ignore the feeling.
Aaron moved in closer, “Well, you’re stuck with us now, but I think I can make it enjoyable.” He waggled his eyebrows at her, and she coughed to hide a laugh. The atmosphere of the room changed around them. The hum of power vibrated on her skin. Thorn’s aura. More than that. She could feel a prickle on the back of her neck that told her he was looking at her.
She turned slowly, facing the predator behind her. His eyes met hers, and she evaluated the look. There was no hunger in his expression, at least not on the surface, but it was something electric. Recognition only a royal alpha could possess. He inhaled once, barely noticeable. His voice was quiet, precise, and meant for her alone. “Be careful, little wolfsbane. I know what you are, and if they put you in this tower, you’re either a weapon or a sacrifice. One I’m not susceptible to.”
Her breath stilled. Not susceptible? Then why mention it at all?
