Chapter Six: Heading to California

Leonidas POV “Okay, load up!” I said to the groups. It was currently Friday afternoon and we were gearing up to leave the pack house and head to the airports. Normally we all prefer to drive, but being on the strict schedule we are, Rheya opted for planes this time. “Daddy, why are you leaving?” I heard Khaalida ask Dean. “We have to rescue Mommy. Bad people have her, but she will be okay. I will explain when you are both older." Dean responded before hugging both his kid’s goodbye. All the grandparents, along with Iris, Gaia, Calypso, Kathryn, Liyah, and Ben oversaw the children. One adult to one child would be the best way to keep them all safe. “Come back safe Dad.” Lor said as her and Rowan hugged me. “Yea Dad, you can’t miss our first day in elite training!” James said with a happy smile. I turned to look at Rheya. “Hey, you weren’t there, executive punishment was decided. They won’t learn until they do it themselves.” She said as she hugged our twin boys. “I guess that means were sparring together now.” I said to James and his smile turned to a frown so quick. We swapped kids and Rheya whispered to Lor, “And were sparring too!”, and Lorelei’s face mimicked her brothers with lightning speed. “Devika, James I can understand, but Lorelei is only twelve!” I said to her! “Her age didn’t matter to her when she was attempting to fight with a warrior!” My mate said promptly, and I shrugged my shoulders at Lor. “This is why I behave.” Rowan said to them in a laugh and Legend and Luciano joined in. Rheya and I turned to head to the vehicles, but we heard Lorelei. “You behave cause you’re a f*****g crybaby Rowan.” Lorelei said in a harsh whisper. I turned around and gave her a disapproving look. “Ben!” I called out to him and he looked at me, “Make sure Lorelei take some laps today! She has some bad language to run off.” She looked at me stunned that I heard, and I shrugged my shoulders at her and Rheya did as well. We quickly climbed in the vehicles, but before we could pull out of the driveway, one of the warriors came running up to the cars. “Alphas! I have something for you!” He yelled as he tapped the windows. Rheya opened her door and stepped out before grabbing a paper from him. Fear and anger spread across her face like a wildfire. I quickly jumped out and eyed the paper with a photo attached. “What is it brother?” Leilani asked as she and the others exited the vehicles. I shoved the photo in my pocket before they could see but passed Leilani the note. It was a map, leading us two a building that was circle and next to it the words “Your mutt and vampire.” “How do we know this is authentic?” Leilani asked. Rheya spoke up before I could, tears were spilling her eyes, I figured I was the same after seeing the photo. “We don’t but we can’t risk ignoring this. We take the small detour to this warehouse and if they girls aren’t there; we continue this plan. Same people, different location. Load up.” Rheya ordered and everyone agreed. We handed Maxwell the map and he began directing Dean where to go. I held Rheya’s hands as she stared out the window, I could only hope the girls are here. After seeing the shape of them, I wasn’t sure they had a lot of time left. Amara POV I sat on the ground, watching over Natalie as she slept. I have never wanted to sleep more than in this moment, to escape the pain I felt. The only people to visit us were Alexander and the boy. Neither of us were fed. The longer they withhold blood from me, the worse the pain gets. If only I could sink my teeth into these rotten bastards. “Natalie! Wake up!” I shouted to her as I heard the door opening. Within seconds she was awake and alert, ready for another day of brutality. Alex and the boy came in with bags this time, slipping them over our heads. “The boss is coming in, so behave pet.” The young boy whispered to Natalie. What a disgusting, puny man. “Good evening Ladies.” We heard a voice say. There was something off about the voice, like it wasn’t natural. “Screw you.” I said as Natalie burst out laughing. “Ah now, I would behave. You girls are being set free. You see, this whole thing was a mishap, I didn’t know of your arriving until my Luna made it known. My men were simply supposed to watch you, not take you.” The man said. I felt him get further away and we heard a smack noise, like he was hitting someone, but it wasn’t I nor Natalie. “My Beta here chose to act without conscious and now we have your pack on our ass. For this reason, we will be releasing you guys in an undisclosed location this afternoon and you will be home before dinner is served.” He said in a chuckle and walked out. Before Natalie or I could come to our senses she was knocked out and I was tazed mercilessly as they uncuffed me from the chains before applying new, mobile ones to my hands and wrist. “Natalie!” I screamed out as I was thrown over a man’s shoulder. “I have to admit, I’m going to miss these girls, they were the most fun we’ve had in years.” The guy carrying me said. “Pig.” I mumbled out. “You know, if it wasn’t for your pack almost doubling ours, we’d be keeping you two whores. Consider yourself lucky you vermin.” He said and I thank the heavens that some of these little henchmen were stupid enough to mention small details. Before I knew it, I was thrown into the back of a truck and Natalie was next to me. Since I couldn’t be knocked out, I decided the best way to spend the drive was attempting to keep track of time. In total the drive was about six to eight hours. Eventually we were taken out from the truck and pulled into a building. The small rays of sun I felt burned my already damaged skin, causing me to let out a small scream. We were thrown to the floor of the warehouse, I felt the cold concrete as we landed and I smelled around trying to figure out where we were but it was no use, my sense went to hell with everything else. “Your pack will be here in just a few hours. Survive that long so we don’t catch the blame.” Alex said. I heard him light up a cigarette and let out a small chuckle. I heard some shuffling of feet before I felt someone grab Natalie. I heard searing flesh and Natalie woke up in a scream, he was burning her. “You used to be so sweet Alex. What happened?!” I screamed out at him. I’m assuming Alex landed a punch right into my face, knocking me back. “The Moon Goddess happened. I was fine being with Daphne. But she just had to have that damn Beta. But guess what? I got a two for one. I hurt you, it also hurt him, the b***h who killed my love and the man who took her away.” He said as he struck me again before throwing me down. I felt him pulled me back up and set something around my neck, the jewelry hit me, and I knew what it was before the burning even began. One final screw you from Alexander the Coward. I waited until I was sure they were gone before I spoke. “Where the hell are, we?” I asked Natalie. “Not one damn idea.” She said in a slump. Then I heard it. A howl off in the distance. Rheya POV “An old lumber mill?” Camille asked me. I nodded my head, why the girls were taken here, I have no idea. “Stop a few miles back, I want to be sure this isn’t a trap.” I said and she complied. We were about 4 hours from home at this point. When the car completely stopped, I opened the door and stepped out, the only one to follow was Leo. I stood facing the abandoned building, allowing Sotiras to take over. She sniffed air around us, we only caught two smells, Natalie, and Amara. Sotiras didn’t give me a chance to say anything before she shifted and took off, everyone immediately followed but the only one who could keep up was Leo. I burst through the door without a second thought and I saw them, beat to hell but alive. Sotiras gave back control and I shifted before I ran up to the girls, taking in their state of being first. Amara’s skin was blistered all over, even charred black in some spots, she had stab marks and enormous cuts. I never even knew vampires could be tortured, but here I was, barely able to recognize her. Natalie was no better, bleeding from giant s***h marks and black and blue all over. “About damn time.” Natalie said trying to make light of the moment. I gently cupped her face and Amara’s before I went around and untied them, Amara immediately removed the necklace from her neck and only then did I realize it was a cross. Before I could even have a chance to hug them, they were grabbed by their mates. Max quickly but gently wrapped Natalie in a possessive hug but released her when she cried out and only then did, he really noticed the marks that covered her body. Dean picked Amara up and while she didn’t cry out, her face was contorted in pain. “Maxwell and Dean! Be gentle!” I commanded and they obliged but still help the girls stand. “Remember when you guys rescued me, and we had to drive in separate cars so you wouldn’t overwhelm me?” I asked and Max nodded, “Don’t make me do that. The girls have been through hell and while I understand you miss them; they need time to heal.” “I’m sorry my love,” Maxwell said to Natalie before he gently cupped her face and softly kissed her forehead. She gave him a nod of reassurance, and Dean just held Amara lightly against his chest. “Now, let’s get them home.” I said to everyone and they agreed and turned to leave. Maxwell gently lifted Natalie into a bridal carry and she nuzzled herself into his chest. Dean carried Amara the same way but had wrapped her in a blanket, so the rising sun didn’t get to her, she was badly burned as is. Once Tyler, Leo, Max, Dean, I, and the girls were settled into back of one vehicle and everyone in the other we began our drive home. Within minutes Natalie was lulling into a safe and comfortable sleep and it seemed the same for Amara. “Amara are you sleeping?” I asked her. She lazily opened her eyes and spoke, “Not a sleep, but my body is shutting down some, so I guess more like knocked out.” “What can we do to help?” I asked her. She shrugged her shoulders and whispered, “I can’t, it’s too dangerous.” “What is it mon chou?” Dean asked her. She finally caved and spoke again, “Blood, human blood is the only thing to bring me back.” She said in defeat. Dean rolled his shirt sleeve up and offered it to her, “Drink baby, you need it, our blood is stronger than humans so it will work better.” “Drinking from you won’t do a thing, we are mated and share that bond, so drinking from you would only make you weak and worsen me. Plus, a frenzy may start.” She said as she drifted off again. Dean shook her gently and she opened her eyes again. “Enough. Amara you will drink from me and that’s an order. We can’t go back to the pack house until you are okay. You may be too tempted and going into a frenzy there, at least in the car we can stop you.” I said as I scooted over to her and offered my arm. She pushed my hand away and buried her face into Dean’s side. I looked at him questioning and he gave me a nod. I looked back at Amara and partially shifted and used my claw to open a good-sized cut on my forearm. “You’ll thank me for this later.” I whispered. Amara looked up with greedy eyes, I knew the smell of fresh blood would be undeniable. She looked in my eyes frantically and I gave her a nod as I pushed my arm in her face more. Finally, her instincts took over and she grabbed my arm quickly but gently and began to drink the blood. I felt faint and a woozy after a minute. “Okay Amara, enough.” Dean said firmly. She had a wild animal look in her eyes and I knew it was hard for her to stop. Leo scooted over and gently grabbed her shoulders and him and Dean pulled her off me. She snarled crazily as I wrapped a spare shirt around my cut. Tyler traded spots with Leo and held Amara firmly into place as she began to thrash around to get back to me. Leo pulled me back and Dean held on to Amara, forcing her to look in his eyes. “Come back to me baby.” He said in a sad tone. She snarled for a few more seconds in between his pleadings before he finally kissed her deeply. The mate bond forcing her to relax. She pulled back from the kiss and looked at me with hurt eyes. “Alpha, I’m so sorry.” She began to say but I cut her off. “What matters is that you are better. I’ve linked some warriors to hunt for you and store the blood in your room. You can finish eating there, but at least you can begin healing.” I said as I pulled her in for a quick hug. Luckily, my rapid healing kicked in and my cut was already gone, making the rest of the drive easier on Amara. *Several Hours Later* As we pulled up to the pack house I noticed Aaliyah and Iris sitting on the steps of the pack house with James and Lorelei. “Sister? You’re home earlier than I thought.” Aaliyah said once I climbed out of the car. “Plans changed. The girls were given back. Don’t overwhelm them.” I said sternly all of them stood nodding their heads. Leo stepped out of the vehicle next and spoke to our children, “James and Lor, go inside. You don’t need to see this.” They gave me a look and I nodded, and for once they didn’t fight, just turned around and went inside. Luckily, I linked all the pack members to clear the house for the girls. I remember when I woke from the hospital and Natalie did her best to not let everyone overwhelm me and I want to do the same for her. Once the kids were gone and I was sure the house was calm I opened the door for the girls to get out. Natalie popped out first and Max helped her despite her protests of being able to do it herself. A few of her bruises and cuts were already beginning to heal, but the bigger injuries (like her fractured ribs and whip marks) would take a little longer. I gave her a small hug. “I’m glad you’re home. It wasn’t the same having Max as my Beta.” I said in a chuckle. She tried to laugh but I could tell it hurt her. Iris then approached us. “I’m so sorry sister.” She said as she began to sob. “I wish I could have done more to help.” She cried out to Natalie. Zach began to pry Iris off, but Natalie stopped him. She pulled her back and looked square in her face. “Iris honey, none of this is your fault. You are a not a fighter, but I’m sure you helped in more ways than one.” She said in a sincere tone. “New vines…” Natalie partially quoted our motto as she cupped Iris’ face in her hand. Iris gave a small smile before Natalie nodded to Max and they walked towards the hospital. “Zach hold the umbrella,” Dean said as he held Amara’s umbrella out. Zach quickly took it and opened it outside the car. Allowing Amara to finally exit the vehicle with Deans help. Iris stepped forward yet again, but said no words knowing her voice would only hurt Amara. She put her finger to her lips, showing she purposefully stayed quiet, and a few tears slipped from her eyes. “La fee,” {The fairy} Amara began, “I’m glad you are still with us.” More tears began to flow from Iris as well as myself. The beauty of my pack still coming together after such horrific events made me proud for bringing together such a strong group of people. After another minute, Zach pulled Iris into a hug and Dean shuffled Amara inside. The hospital was no use for her, the only thing that could help her was blood and I’d be damned I wasn’t going to help my best friend. I walked towards the hospital and once Maxwell was done getting Natalie situated, I had him draw blood from me, just enough to keep me from going faint. I had one of the Omegas take my blood along with a meal for Dean up to their room. “Maxwell, you are also excused from your duties until Natalie is well,” I said to him as I rolled my sleeve down. “Alpha, I can’t just take days off.” “You can and you will, I’ve already arranged for Wendy to take over. She’s excited about taking over the hospital for a few days. Although she wishes the circumstances were better.” I said to him. He huffed and stood back, knowing I wouldn’t take no for an answer. “Okay, I’ll have a cot brought in to stay with Natalie.” He said and I smile. We made our way back into her room and the Nurse was finishing up another exam. “I’m sorry to say but we may have to rebreak her shoulder. When it was broken initially, she was restrained in such a way that her shoulder healed completely wrong.” She said. Natalie huffed out in annoyance and waved us over. “Let’s get it over with.” She said as she turned her head away from her shoulder and closed her eyes. Maxwell got closer and held Natalie’s face to his chest. I moved closer and the nurse gestured for me to do it. She was a healer, not a fighter so there was no assurance that she could do it. I placed my hand on Natalie’s shoulder and my free hand, held her arm in place. “I love you Beta,” I said as I quickly broke her shoulder and she cried out. This was not how I wanted to welcome her home.
